THUNDERHAWKS IMPRESSIVE IN THEIR RUN FOR WILLIAMSPORT SOCCER OPENING DAY-SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH REGISTRATION DATES SET / WRAP-UP

A Message from our President – Mark Phipps The State Little League Champions from Hilltown?! What a ride our 11/12 year old Thunderhawks baseball team took the community on as they captured the District, Regional and State Little League Championship! An absolute first for Deep Run! Their journey came to an end in Bristol, Connecticut during the Mid-Atlantic Championship Game against the Maryland State Champions. Although their quest to make it to the Little League World Series Tournament in Williamsport, PA, came to end, the memories the players, coaches, families, and the Deep Run community have been left with will last a lifetime! So congratulations to the Thunderhawks, a group of special young men that took us all on a magical ride! We have made improvements to our registration process that have streamlined and modernized our procedures. This should make registering your children both easier and more convenient. Online registration has grown in popularity and we would encourage those with access to the internet to give it a try! Also hours during the week have been added to give you additional options for registering. These improvements should eliminate potential problems. We’re making progress! Parking continues to be a concern at Deep Run. We had to remove several parking spots near our exit to accommodate the expansion of the soccer field to a large sided field. We have added an overflow parking lot on Callowhill Road just north of our entrance. We would ask that when parking you maximize our existing space by parking as close to the next car as safely possible. We will be hosting the DRVSA Hall of Fame Dinner on November 15th to honor individual and sponsors that have been instrumental in the success of Deep Run. It is a truly memorable evening and I would encourage you to attend. Additional details are available on our website. Hope to see you there!

S M I L E!!! Picture Day – Sept 25th

Bring your SMILE!!! Intramural Soccer Pictures will be taken on Saturday, September 25th. We will try to do our best to work around game schedules. Please plan to have your child in uniform with his/her completed picture envelope at Deep Run 15 minutes prior to his/her scheduled time. This will assist in moving the teams through smoothly and avoid having your child miss his/her team photo.

INTRAMURAL SOCCER Opening day is September 11th with opening ceremonies beginning at 9:00am. Come meet the Pennridge High School Men’s Varsity Soccer Team on Opening Day. They will be there to support the Intramural Program as well as help them kick off the fall season. Autographs will be available after the ceremonies. Pee Wee Division 4 & 5 yr olds start at 9:00am every Saturday beginning September 11th. They play 3 v 3 with an 8-week curriculum, which ends at the end of October. Minor B Division 6 & 7 yr olds play 3 v 3 the first half of the year then 5 v 5 the 2nd half of the year. Minor A Division 8 & 9 yr olds play 5 v 5 the first half of the year then 8 v 8 the 2nd half of the year. Major B Division 10 – 12 yr olds play 8 v 8 the entire season. Major A Coed Division 13-15 yr olds play 8 v 8 the entire season. All Divisions are designed with player development in mind. The most important thing we can do for these young players is give them the tools needed to play the game at their fullest potential. Thank you to all of the coaches who help support the program and the small-sided concept. I would like to welcome Joe Wilson as the new Player Agent for the 2004 year. I would like to thank Dave Cardie & Chris Villella for their hard work and wish the girls program much success this fall. Check out the Deep Run website (www.drvsa.org) for all the division schedules and roster information for the fall season. The website also has a complete description of each division curriculum followed by the coaches. Yours in soccer, Pat Lordi, Boys Intramural Commissioner

TRAVEL SOCCER NEWS!!!!

The U-14 Girls with Dave Cardie as coach are planning to go to Hawaii and U-14 Boys with Coach Joe Youk are planning to travel to San Diego with their fund raising from the Labor Day and Turkey Day Tournaments. Travel Teams throughout the Tri-State are signing up for these Tournaments. These Tournaments for years have been considered the primo events for soccer by many soccer Clubs. We hear many wonderful compliments on how well organized and on how great the competition is. We are looking r forward as a Club to support both these teams on their fund raising goals for these trips.

World Class Coaching Comes to Deep Run

Over 70 young soccer players had the opportunity to work with a group of talented and respected coaches for 5 nights at Deep Run. The highlight of the week was a visit from George O’Neil, a former United States National Team player and English Premier League player for Glasgow Celtic in Scotland. He was joined by Sam Lee, assistant coach for the Kixx as well as the current coaches from Pennridge, Penn Charter, CB West and Lansdale Catholic High Schools. The All-American Striker/Keeper Camp is a fund raiser for Deep Run Valley Sports Association and has raised over $7,000 for the organization. The camp challenges our travel soccer players with some of the finer techniques of the game. The coaching staff volunteers their time and talent because they truly enjoy giving back to the game that has given them so much. Please join us in thanking them.

Deep Run would like to take this time to expressthe Club's appreciate to Dave Cardie and those involved with his All-American Striker-Keeper Camp. This is Dave's second year running the camp as a Deep Run Soccer Fundraiser. This year the event brought in over $3,500 to the soccer program. The camp had over 56 participants ages 8 to 15. Events like this represent the positive accomplishments of working together for the benefit of the entire club and the true spirit of Deep Run.

BASKETBALL REGISTRATION The 2003 – 2004 basketball season was very successful for Deep Run and all who participated. The intramural program had many eager young players and great competition. The Travel teams enjoyed similar success with several teams reaching the playoffs and a number that won their league titles. The new 2004 – 2005 basketball season is quickly approaching, and it is time to get that hoops- hysteria fired up again! Intramural registration and Travel tryout information this year will available online at www.drvsa.org through October 1 or at the clubhouse on the following dates: The intramural basketball program is open to boys and girls ages 6-17 and the travel program ages for Boys are 9-14 and Girls, ages 10-14. Registration will be held at the Deep Run Clubhouse as follows: 4

Friday, September 24th 6:00 pm - 8 pm Saturday, September 25th 9:00 am - 12 noon Monday 9/27 - Friday 10/1 9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon Friday, October 1st 6:00 p.m. - 8 p.m.

As the new Girls Intramural Basketball commissioner I would like to again thank Fred Thomas and Drew McClatchy for their efforts over the past few years and their support as we transition the program this year. The basketball program at Deep Run has grown and changed over the last few years and as we look toward the future I hope to get new ideas and volunteers from coaches to player agents involved to continue the program.

The basketball program needs volunteers for Boys Intramural Commissioner, Boys and Girls Player agents, and of course coaches. If you are interesting in volunteering for any of the positions or have ideas that would help the program please contact Mike Koch at the clubhouse (215)-822-6037 – email [email protected] or Kevin Sheehan (215) 453-1810 email [email protected]. Thank you, Kevin Sheehan.

LIL’ SLUGGERS TRAINING CAMP Our first season of training our 4 year olds went well. Twenty-four young boys enjoyed learning about the basic aspects of baseball, which included hitting, throwing, running, fielding, field education and fun. Next season we will need someone to take over this training for this division. Please contact Mark Zickler at drvsa.org from the Directors page for information.

INTRAMURAL SEASON Our season started dry this year compared to 2003. Opening day saw the Pennridge Varsity team greet all the teams and sign autographs and we honored our 10 year old District 30 and Section 5 finalists. We had 7 T-ball teams, 8 Minor B, 5 Minor A, 10 AAA, 6 Majors, 1 Junior and 3 Senior teams participate this season. Over 500 boys are learning the great game of baseball. A big thank you goes out to all the Division Directors, Managers, Assistant Coaches and Team Parents that help make our season successful.

MAJORS DIVISION Our 2004 major division champions with a 13-1-1 record were the Athletics sponsored by Blooming Glenn Antiques and our second place team with an 11-4 record was the Orioles sponsored by Lee Stover 5 Insurance. The division had some great baseball this season and we thank all the players and coaches for their sportsmanship throughout the year. The Season ending all-star game was a huge hit with the Nationals beating the Americans in a well-played game.

ALL-STAR TEAMS 9-year olds- This season we fielded two 8/9 year old all-star teams. They took some lumps but also had some great success. Thank you to the coaches that made this experience possible for these 20 players. 10 year olds- Our 9/10 team started slow and continued to improve throughout the season. They had a good showing in the L.L. tournament and played well in some community tournaments in the surrounding area. 11 year olds- This group had another great season finishing 14-11 and finishing second at the Quakertown Tournament, 3rd at our own 11 year old Field of Dreams tournament and fifth out of twelve. With a 2-1 record filling in for our12 year old team in our 12 year old Field of Dreams Tournament, they finished the Little League tournament as one of the last 4 teams’ left, but could not defend their title from last season. Watch for this group in 2005!! 11/12 all-stars- Well, lets see. District 30 champs (First-ever for D.R. at this level), Section 5 champs (First- ever for D.R. at this level), Pa. State champs (First-ever for D.R. and first since 1986 for district 30), Mid-Atlantic Regional finalists and on ESPN (First ever for D.R., District 30 and Section 5). This team has a lot to be proud of and we all thank them for the excitement that they provided for all of us this summer. They are now off to the Cooperstown Dreams Park for a season ending tournament. Good Luck guys.

UMPIRES Thank you once again for your hard work this season. We need more volunteers this coming season and the umpire day camp that Bruce Knipe and the Little League umpire staff assembles is outstanding. Come on and learn what it takes to umpire a game and help the players at Deep Run out for years to come. Our Umpire Chief Bruce Knipe spent a week at the Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, N.Y. and out of 64 umpires was chosen to be one of six umpires to do the championship game that week. This is the National weekly tournament that we send a team to each season. Way to go, Bruce!!

MANAGERS/COACHES NEEDED FOR 2005 SEASON This past season we had to make an extra effort to secure managers for about 1/3 of our intramural teams including 6 of 7 T-ball teams. In an effort to get the ball rolling I am asking all adults interested in managing or assistant coaching a team for the 2005 season to email me atzickl [email protected]. I will need to know the following: Division requested; Your name; Son’s name; Son’s age; and Phone #:

Also any manager interested in running a Division as a Division Director please note that in your- e mail. We hope to have 80-90% of our coaching needs ready to go before the season even starts. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask Mark at the above -email address.

SPONSORS We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support of the Deep Run Thunderhawks baseball program. Through your generous contributions our program has been able to achieve great things and we thank you. Any sponsor interested in supporting our program can contact us at drvsa.org. In addition anyone interested in supporting our 2005 Cooperstown Dreams Park team can contact Mark Zickler at [email protected].

Contributions are still being accepted to help with the cost from our 2004 State champs. You may contact Mark for that as well.

IN CLOSING Thank you all for a great season to remember. I only hope that the all the hard work and training continues to produce ball players that not only know how to play the game, but know how to enjoy the game and have fun. In closing I ask that our parents get involved in any way that they can. Managing, assistant coaching, special events, snack stand, umpires, fields & grounds and more need to always be filled. For a Little League Parent a baseball game is nothing more than a nervous breakdown divided into innings. So we all may as well help the kids and ourselves enjoy it. PLAY BALL!! Would that be something or what!!

Deep Run Connie Mack Baseball Connie Mack Commissioner: Bill Dameron

Many of our Connie Mack players began preparing for the season the st1 week of January. They attended workouts each Saturday morning till the weather broke and outside practices could begin. Each of the 3 teams took on a new look with new uniforms highlighted with Deep Run Royal Blue. Head coaches Mike Leahy, Perry Detweiler & Bill Dameron gave this report on their seasons.

Connie Mack “B” The Connie Mack “B” team started out strong going 3-2 in our first five games. The second half of the season did not fare as well, ending the season -58. It was still a positive season considering most Connie Mack “B” teams consist of 14 and 15 year olds, and Deep Runs team consists of 13 and 14 year olds. Our pitching staff was led by Brian Stephenson, a Connie Mack “B” All Star and one of the top pitchers in the league. David Apple (Connie Mack “B” All Star), Jess Unangst, and Mike Ferrier led our offensive attack. Other players, which also helped contribute in a positive season, were Jon Martenak, Kley Leatherman, Collin Cronmiller, Justin O’Hara, Nick Trivino, Andy Slaymaker, Chris Leahy, D.J. Cardacin, Ben Reed, and Ryan Sheffer. Coaching Staff – Head Coach … Mike Leahy, Asst. Coaches … Max Smith, Scott Leatherman, Dan Martenak.

Connie Mack “B1” This year was a tale of two seasons. We started out great and after only 8 games we were- 44. Unfortunately after that, things didn’t go so well. We finished the season 4-13, and missed the playoffs by one game. We had a couple of young men that had great seasons and represented us at the B1 All-Star game. Those players were Tyler Penhallow, Mike Helbling, Jim Napalitano, and Dan Raymond. I would like to take the time to thank Mr. Mike Helbling and Mr. Gerry Meyle for all their help, and wish all of our players good luck next year. Thanks, Head Coach Perry Detweiler

Connie Mack “A” Similar to our B & B1 teams the “A” team was very young. With only three 16 year olds our team goal was to play well enough to compete with “A” teams and make the playoffs. We met our goals with an 8-13 regular season record. Seven of the 13 losses were by only 1 run. Our playoff experience was the same, a 3-2 loss to Towamencin. It was a great season. I think you will see big things from these boys in the future. I would like to thank coaches; Jim Alexander, Bruce Knipe & Mark Zickler for all the time and dedication they have had for this group of boys. Players: Steve Alexander, Kevin Colyar, Patrick Dameron, Eric Gotwals, Patrick Hanks, Ryan Herrmann, Brian Hilinski, John Jefferson, Mike Knipe, Mitch Leatherman, Ryan Phipps, Mike Trivino, Jake Unangst, Justin Zickler. We are looking forward to building on the recent success of the Deep Run Baseball program to continue next season. Our Connie Mack teams will be age appropriate next season.

Thanks for everyone’s help with our outstanding field & facilities. Anyone interested in helping out, coaching or attending a Connie Mack meeting please contact Bill Dameron by email– [email protected].

DEEP RUN SOFTBALL

The Deep Run Lady Lightning Softball started its season with the nd2 annual egg scramble for our Dewdrop Division and ended with our four travel teams participating in the Pony National Tournament. I would like to thank all of our coaches and sponsors for making 2004 a super season. Some highlights of the year included the introduction of our Pee Wee Rainbow Division. This group of twenty-five 3- and 4 year olds were quite remarkable in how quickly they picked up some of the basic skills of softball including hitting, fielding, throwing and sliding. We look forward to seeing many of these kids join our Dewdrop division for the 2005 season. A bigthanks to Sara Downey, Brittany Martin, Tara Canning and Krista Morrone for their assistance with this program.

In our Travel program the U10 Lady Lightning placed ninth in the Pony Nationals in Sterling VA. With teams entered from all over the East Coast and Midwest the Lightning posted an overall record of -53. The Lightning got excellent pitching from Krista Morrone and Hannah Campbell along with excellent overall team speed and fielding. Congratulations to Krista, Hannah, Jordan Villella, Tara Canning, Carly Yost, Maura Cardacin, Holly Seiz, Rebecca Morrow, Erin Mikolai, Alexis Detweiler, Jess Youk, and Megan Martin. Our U12 and U14 Travel Squads also competed at the Sterling Nationals while our U16 squad traveled to Raleigh NC to play in their age division Congratulations to all the girls as this was the first time any Deep Run squad had played in a Pony National tournament. Travel try-out dates are posted at www.drvsa.org

Clinics: We will be hosting a series of clinics through the fall on specific skills. Details will be posted at www.drvsa.org in September. Deep Run continues on its mission of continuous improvement with plans for the 2005 season. If you would like to volunteer your special skill to the program please email me at [email protected] Sign-ups for the 2005 intramural season will be in January. The Lady Lightning would like to congratulate the Deep Run Thunderhawks on their fantastic showing in the LL tournament.

SOFTBALL SPONSORS: Our thanks to the following sponsors of our softball program. Without their help we could not provide a quality softball program to our players.

Every year the Executive Board sets up a nominating committee to look for volunteers to fill the positions on its sports boards. Below is a list of volunteer positions. Last year we filled each position with folks who volunteered to help in the running of Deep Run. This year we have openings at all levels of the board. As people move on or retire, positions open. Each year as we grow, the needs of the organization grow. The basketball, soccer and baseball programs are looking for volunteers to fill board positions. Many people ask, “How can I help?” One way is to volunteer as an active board member. To find what some of the responsibilities of these positions are, go to on our web site www.drvsa.org, then select the Board of Directors page, and then select the By-Laws of Deep Run Valley Sports Association. To volunteer for one of the positions you can email Hans Sumpf at [email protected]

Deep Run Valley Sports Association Field Expansions Deep Run Valley Sports Association continues to grow in families and players. More and more people are moving into the Hilltown area, resulting in an urgent need for more playing fields. We are fortunate to have brokered two lease agreements with Hilltown Township which provide us with more land. However, it is the financial responsibility of Deep Run Valley Sports Association to maintain and improve these parcels.

10 The first land area leased to the organization is located on Telegraph Road. Our five year lease started this past June. The Telegraph site provides three soccer fields for our teams to use. These fields are now playable after resting two years. Work still needs to be done to improve the playingsurfaces. Hopefully, early next spring we will be able to perform these improvements at minimal costs to the club. The second area which DRVSA is leasing is an open area at Fairhill Road and Route 152. It consists of approximately 12 acres. DRVSA has a thirty year lease from Hilltown Township for use of the Fairhill Road parcel. Thus far, we have been able to use this area as a practice site. This parcel, however, needs major improvement. The club’s intent for the Fairhill Road site is to establish threeor four playing fields, along with additional parking and a pavilion. These improvements will not come cheaply. It has been determined that to do the improvements correctly we need to hire professional help. This will entail an engineering firm, surveyors, and putting out to bids for excavation. Our intent is to have the site available for play by the fall 2005. This is a very aggressive time line, but the growth of the club calls for playing space. The board of directors will have some difficult decisionsto make to finance this project. After doing some initial cost analysts, the cost can run over $150,000.00. The engineering cost could be $10,000.00. We, as a club, need to weigh all of our options in going forward with this project. Raising the needed money for this project will be a major club initiative where we all must help. You will be hearing more about specific fundraising proposals in the future. Ideas and workable solutions are always welcome by the board. Your support can only help DRVSA move forward to provide our children with a safe and fun play environment.

Automated External Defibrillator On Sunday June 6th, DRVSA was presented with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) by the Healthy Hearts Foundation. The AED will be made available at the DRVSA complex to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrests. AEDs are small devices that look at a person's heart rhythm through special pads placed on the person’s chest. The AED can recognize ventricular fibrillation also knowns a "sudden cardiac arrest" (SCA). AEDs are designed to be used by "first responders". If SCA is present, an AED will determine that, and will actually talk the responder through some very simple steps to defibrillate. Since the AED directs the user, AEDs will not shock someone who does not need to be shocked. Anyone, even a child from 11 years of age and up can be trained to use an AED. AEDs use embedded computer chips to analyze the rhythms, making it possible for non-medical professionals to providethe same vital service without risking an accidental shock. Most AEDs are self-grounded and can be safely used in wet environments and on metal surfaces with no risk to the victim or rescuer.

11 The Healthy Hearts Foundation was founded by Drs. J. Todd Alderfer and David A. Travis of Alderfer & Travis Cardiology (ATC). ATC began their fund-raising efforts in 2001 with their first annual 5K Race, 1 Mile Kids Fun Run and 1.5 Mile Fitness Walk, and continue with the event each year. Fund- raising efforts have provided support for the local Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, PA, as well as provided monies to distribute AEDs to various facilities in the area, such as churches, nursing homes and other community facilities. Dr.Alderfer also coaches both softball and baseball at Deep Run. Many thanks to Scott Campbell, our softball player agent, for initiating the process to receive an AED and to Drs. Alderfer and Travis for supplying Deep Run with this life saving device.
