The 2017 season is just the second year for Temple men's soccer at its new stadium. The Owls now play on the turf at the new Temple Sports Complex. The complex, just south of Temple’s Main Campus, was completed in August, 2016, and also serves as the home for , field hockey, women’s soccer, and track & field. The $22 million project, started in September 2015, features two playing fields.

The northern field, ringed by a publicly accessible track, serves men’s and women’s soccer and women’s track & field. Each field includes bleachers, a digital scoreboard and press box. An 11,000-square-foot locker room facility separates the fields. The approximately 10-acre property, which is the site of the former William Penn High School, also provides much-needed space for intramural and club sports, such as field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and Frisbee. New sidewalks were installed, and 40 street trees were planted around the perimeter of the complex.

• 24 • 2016 SEASON REVIEW 2017 Temple Men's Soccer 2016 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

Coach MacWilliams welcomed three new supporting staff members. James

Gledhill and Joe Barber were welcomed as Associate Head Coach and

Assistant Coach, respectively. Former Owl Jake Lister joined the staff

as a Graduate Assistant and Director of Operations.

• The Owls posted their second consecutive 10-win season and seventh overall for

MacWilliams.

• Went unbeaten in the inaugural season at the Temple Sports Complex with a home record of 8-0-2 that saw only three goals from the opposition.

• Overall, the team posted 23 goals and 20 assists for 66 total points.

• The teams largest margin of victory came in a 4-0 defeat of Fairfield at home. Senior Jorge Gomez Sanchez contributed on every scoring play, adding a second career hat trick to

his resume.

• Earned wins over SMU and UCF for the first time in program history, topping SMU 1-0 on the road and UCF 1-0 in overtime in the final home game of the season.

• The Owls’ two first-team all-conference selections were the first for the program since entry into the American Athletic Conference in 2013.

• Temple opened its season going 4-0 at home including a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh, a team they had not met since 1979.

• The Owls ranked as high as No. 2 in the NSCAA East Regional Poll following their 4-0 start and received votes in the National Top 25 Poll.

• For the first time since October of 1989, Temple was able to defeat Penn State on the road, snapping a four-game losing streak in State College.

• Gomez Sanchez tallied 14 goals and 3 assists to match his 2015 mark of 31 total points for the season. He now ranks in a tie for fifth all-time in career goals and fifth in single-sea- son goals.

• Gomez Sanchez’s 62 career points places him ninth in the all-time rankings.

• Alex Cagle finished the season with a 0.82 goals-against average, 52 saves and 8 shutouts. His GAA ranks third alltime behind Dan Scheck (0.67 in 2013) and Patrick Hannigan

(0.68 in 2003).

• Cagle also sits in a tie for third all-time in career goalkeeping wins with 20. His current career GAA of 0.66 would take over the program record if maintained through his final season in 2017.

• The Owls are graduating seven seniors who have collectively contributed to 32 wins and three 10-win seasons over the past four years.

• Matt Mahoney concluded his career playing in every game of the past four years. Similarly, Stefan Mueller wrapped up his four years starting in all 68 matches.
