He graduated from Bridgetown High School. Hicks received a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University (Chemistry) in 1936, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University in 1937, As a Rhodes Scholar he went on the receive both a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University in 1939 and 1940 respectively. In 1945 Henry Hicks married Pauline Banks and they had four children. He married for the second time, in in 1965, to Gene (MacGregor) Morison. Hicks married Rosalie Marie (Hummie) Comeau in January of 1990. Hicks was admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1941. After his wartime service he set up a law partnership with John D. Orlando. In 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and became a specialist in radar. He served in Canada, England, and, Belgium. He had reached the rank of captain by the time of his discharge in 1945. Hicks was elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature from Annapolis County in October 1945, serving that riding until 1956, He was elected for Annapolis East from 1956 until his personal defeat in 1960. He was the province's first Minister of Education, serving from 1949-1955. In January of 1954 he became the Provincial Secretary and then Premier of the Province of Nova Scotia on September 30th; chairman of Nova Scotia Power Commission from 1954-56; and, chairman of Nova Scotia Liquor Commission in 1955. He was the leader of the Official Opposition from 1956-60. Hicks was a member of the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia and its leader from 1954-61, In 1960 Henry Hicks was appointed Dean of Arts and Sciences for Dalhousie University followed by appointments as vice-president in 1961 and president in 1963. He served as university president from 1963 to October 1980. He became President Emeritus upon his leaving the position of president. Hicks was active in: UNESCO, serving as its president 1964-1968; president of the Canadian Bible Society, 1965-68; member of the Canada Council, 1963-69; member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada; and, served on the Board of Governors of the University of Guyana, 1970-1975. Hicks was also a member of: the Royal Canadian Legion; the Halifax Club; Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia; Atlantic Salmon Federation; The Saraguay Club; Leander Club; Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies; Nova Scotia Stamp Club; Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada; The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada; The Postal History Society of Canada; The Royal Philatelic Society, London; and, the Bishop Family Association. His hobbies included: fly fishing; philately; bridge; and, woodworking, Hick was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada on June 26, 1970, in recognition of his contribution in the fields of government and education. On April 27, 1972 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. He retired March 5, 1990, on his 75th birthday. Henry Hicks and his wife Rosalie died on December 9, 1990, from injuries sustained as a result of an automobile accident, at St. Croix, Nova Scotia. Custodial history Fonds was donated in 1990 by Henry Hicks and in 1991 by his daughter, Catherine Maggs. Scope and content Fonds consists of material relating to Henry Hicks political career, his time as Dalhousie University President and also his personal papers and hobbies. This fonds includes his diaries, personal papers, appointment books, correspondence, Dalhousie records, speeches, political records, philatelic records, newspaper clippings and photographs. The Settlement Agreement is intended by the Settling Parties to fully, finally, and forever resolve, discharge and settle the Released Claims (as defined below), upon and subject to the terms and conditions hereof. I. THE LITIGATION. On May 5, 2017, Plaintiff David Orr instituted a civil action on behalf of a class of similarly affected persons against Inter-Continental Hotels Corporation and Intercontinental Hotels Group Resources, Inc., alleging that as a result of IHG’s security failures, he and the other class members had their payment card information stolen by hackers in the Data Security Incidents, as defined below, and, as a result, incurred damages (“the Litigation”). On July 10, 2017, Inter-Continental Hotels Corporation and InterContinental Hotels Group Resources, Inc. filed a motion to dismiss Orr’s complaint for failure to state a claim. On July 14, 2017, Plaintiffs David Orr and Henry Chamberlain filed their amended complaint. On August 4, 2017, Plaintiffs David Orr, Henry Chamberlain, Angela Mickel, and Jennifer Grady filed their Second Amended Complaint. Plaintiffs David Orr, Henry Chamberlain, Angela Mickel, and Jennifer Grady and Defendants are referred to as the Parties. On September 8, 2017, Inter- Continental Hotels Corporation and InterContinental Hotels Group Resources, Inc. moved to dismiss the Second Amended Complaint for failure to state a claim. The motion was fully briefed and was pending when the Settling Parties reached this Settlement. Representative Plaintiffs believe that the claims asserted in the Litigation, as set forth in the Second Amended Class Action Complaint, have merit. Representative Plaintiffs and Plaintiffs’ Counsel, however, recognize and acknowledge the expense and length of continued proceedings necessary to prosecute the Litigation against Defendants, including through further motion practice, trial, and potential appeals.
