Jamie Goode, wineanorak.com, March 2009 Cover photograph by Richard Bush Introduction The mythical walled vineyard of Clos de Tart is prominently situated at the very heart of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, exactly as created, or rather re-created in 1184. One of five grands crus within Morey-Saint-Denis, this is in fact amonopole , meaning the entire appellation of Clos de Tart is under the sole ownership of the Clos. There are only seven grand cru monopoles across France, five of which are within Burgundy*. The property, of just 7.5 hectares, is owned by the Mommessin family and is brilliantly managed by Sylvain Pitiot. Sylvain took over the reins in 1996, since which time Clos de Tart has enjoyed a formidable improvement in quality. The potential had always been outstanding but it took the total commitment of the Mommessin family, allied to the extraordinary talent of Sylvain, to realise it. Clos de Tart is now producing one of the very greatest wines in Burgundy. History Records of Clos de Tart can be traced back to a parcel of land called Climat-des-Forges which was sold to Cistercian nuns, the Bernardines of Notre Dame de Tart in 1141. They renamed it Clos de Tart, (clos referring to land enclosed by a wall.) Since then, astonishingly, there have only been three owners.

  • Morey-Saint-Denis 2019
    MOREY-SAINT-DENIS 2019 2019 was our first year of organic viticulture. It was also an excellent vintage: small yields, with perfectly balanced grapes produced a Clos des Lambrays with lots of concentration, an intense bouquet, and a smooth, rich texture. THE VINEYARD: Our two Morey-Saint-Denis vineyards are located up the slope above the village: Les Larrets is on the top of Clos des Lambrays and En La Rue de Vergy is on the top of Clos de Tart. Those two parcels have some similar characteristics: superficial soils, lots of limestone rocks, and a fresh microclimate, especially at night. THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING: Bud-break on 2nd April, earlier than usual, then a cool month of May and beginning of June that slowed development of the vines. The start of Flowering was difficult in cool, damp weather. Fortunately, from the mid-flowering point on 14th June, the sun and warm weather returned. However, the early interrupted floraison resulted in coulure, which partly explains the low yields in 2019. Summer was beautiful, hot and dry. By mid-July, the small green berries were swelling, but the vines were struck by two weeks of a heatwave that decelerated normal grape growth: the berries stayed smaller than usual for the rest of the growing season. In the context of a dry summer across Burgundy, our vines in Morey-Saint-Denis were nonetheless lucky to see more rainfall than other villages, and they did not suffer from drought, even if at the end of August a hot southerly breeze caused further concentration to a crop already appearing reduced in size.

On the label, the words GRAND CRU must appear immediately below the name of the appellation in characters of exactly the same size. TASTING NOTES Bonnes-Mares is rich and fleshy with mouth-filling body. It has a clearly- defined structure, full-bodied rather than flowery and at times a little wild. It will stand aging for as long as 30-50 years. Wine lovers argue over the nuances said to distinguish the Morey side of the appellation from the end. The truth is that the roundness of the one and the elegance of the other are submerged in the delicately tannic power common to both. Its aromas evoke violet, humus and underbrush. SERVING SUGGESTIONS A successful blend of impressive build and meaty texture means this wine is a worthy equal to game, which responds well to its huge aromatic intensity and, in the maturer vintages, its musky notes. Preferably the game should be roasted, but the wine will also take on stews without fuss as well as fine wine-based sauces. Duck (even laquered Pekin-style) is similarly enhanced because the virile tannins in the wine give structure to the aromatic and delicately-textured flesh.     Clos des Lambrays, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Tart, Clos Saint-Denis APPELLATION D’ORIGINE CONTRÔLÉE Appellations Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits region (Côte-d’Or). Producing commune: Morey-Saint-Denis. On the label, the words GRAND CRU must appear immediately below the name of any of these appellations in characters of exactly the same size. TASTING NOTES Diversity is to be expected as each Grand Cru has its own personality. To the eye, this wine is plain ruby, sometimes a bit darker. Veiled in strawberry and violet, the Clos de Tart offers both robustness and charm. Quite tannic when young, it softens with age while gaining in complexity. The Clos des Lambrays is a true aristocrat, fully rounded in youth and with added depth and gravity as the years go by. The Clos Saint-Denis impresses by its finely-tuned nuances – this wine is the Mozart of the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de la Roche is firmer, deeper and more serious, closely akin to Chambertin. Aromas of humus and truffle are often precursors to notes of small red or black fruits. A small part of the Bonnes-Mares appellation lies in this commune, but the greater part is in Chambolle-Musigny. (See Appellation sheets No.5). SERVING SUGGESTIONS Intense and full-bodied when fully mature, these wines have a densely tannic texture and an aromatic richness which makes them a fitting – and equal - partner for feathered game. They are perfect, too, with a rib steak and, for lovers of Asian cuisine, adapt well to the aromatic intensity of glazed poultry.
