“3 WHEELS AROUND the LAKE” VARESE – APRIL,10 2005 5TH INTERNATIONAL HALF-MARATHON, KM 21,097 on Tandem, Bicycle, Handbikes and Wheelchairs “3 WHEELS AROUND THE LAKE” VARESE – APRIL,10 2005 5TH INTERNATIONAL HALF-MARATHON, KM 21,097 on tandem, bicycle, handbikes and wheelchairs Dear Friends, we thank you very much for attending to our contest, there are 14 tandem, 7 cycles, 89 handbikes and 24 wheelchairs registered. Please pay attention to the following information and remember that the positive outcome of the competition depends also on how the agreed rules are observed. Saturday, 9 April 2005 From 5 PM all athletes will meet at Hotel Continental in Cassinetta di Biandronno (map ref. 1) for the: Delivery of the competition number, PASS for car, etc. Payment of the registration fee The accommodation bills will have to be paid directly to the Hotel: all athletes living farther than 250 Km from Varese, have a reduction of € 40,00 on hotel bill for the night of April 9 (this amount will be paid by POLHA) Sunday, 10 April 2005 From 9.30 AM to 12.30 the racetrack, the main road (strada Provinciale) around the Varese lake will be close to the traffic for any vehicle and bike, from Bardello to Biandronno, Cazzago Brabbia, Bodio Lomnago, Galliate, Azzate, Buguggiate, Varese, Gavirate. ATTENTION: It won't be possible to reach the START to Bardello with the cars, and not even to follow the competition with car, bicycles, minibus.... Who has some particular requests, immediately turns him to the reception office. For this reason it is very important to observe the following: 1. ATHLETS’ MEETING: From 8 AM in GAVIRATE at Centro Commerciale “Campo dei Fiori” (map ref. 3), viale Ticino, 82 – Gavirate, entrance street “della Ciocca”. ATTENTION: the Centro Commerciale will be open. The Direction has reserved us 2 floors to park the cars, for the reception office, for athletes gathering before competition, and it allows us to use the hygienic services. Parking level B Reserved to the athletes' CARS. The MINI-BUS will have to park to the outside of the Center (limit of height of the parking lot!!) Parking level C Secretary’s office (from 8 AM distribution of the competition numbers, car PASS, etc.) and athletes’ gather before competition. ATHLETS WHO HAVE ALREADY GOT THE COMPETITION NUMBER, LODGING AT CONTINENTAL HOTEL, can reach the departure point on their competition wheelchairs or hand bikes and report to the competition Judge by the time scheduled above (Call Room) TO ATHLETS ARRIVED BY AIRPLANE: meeting at 8.30 AM at Continental Hotel in order to be driven by the organisers to Bardello. Who doesn’t want to utilise this transportation, is kindly requested to advice when collecting the race number Saturday evening. At the end of the competition the organisers will ensure a car service returning to the Hotel. START: In Bardello, via Piave close to the MUNICIPIO (town hall), see map ref. 4, as follow: 10.00 a.m. BICYCLES & TANDEM race 10.15 a.m. HANDBIKE international half marathon: ore 10.15 Div. C masc. (35 handbikes) ore 10.20 Div. B masc. (35 handbikes) ore 10.25 Div. A masc. & all the female categories (20 handbikes) 10.30 a.m. WHEELCHAIR international half marathon all the categories M/F (25 wheelchairs) 3. TRACK: The length is 21,097 km on the main road across the municipalities of Bardello, Biandronno, Cazzago Brabbia, Bodio Lomnago, Galliate Lombardo, Azzate, Buguggiate, Varese, and Gavirate, Voltorre. ATTENTION: there are many gutters and new rotatory, two of which (place Varese-Schiranna) have been realized from not too long. UDACE and FIDAL judges. FIC timekeepers. Road patrolled by Polizia Stradale, Polizia Provinciale, Polizie locali, Carabinieri, Protezione Civile, motorcyclists and more than 350 volunteers standing along the track. It’s obligatory to wear a helmet. The racetrack will be totally closed to the traffic, however please race on the LEFT LANE, INSIDE PART in order to allow rescue’s and organiser’s car to drive on the right lane; in case of puncture or breakdown, please reach the RIGHT LANE and wait for help (be careful when crossing the lane) 4. ARRIVAL: By 12.30 in Gavirate, Voltorre on the main road n. 1 (SP 1), close to the cross-road street Chiostro and street S. Michele (map ref. 5). Competitors still running at 12.30, will be stopped. ON ARRIVAL following athletes are kindly requested to stay at organisers disposal for a “quick” reward ceremony: TANDEM/BICYCLES 1st 2nd 3rd classified male tandem and 1st 2nd 3rd classified mixed tandem (any category) HAND BIKES 1st 2nd 3rd male classified and 1st 2nd 3rd female classified (any category) WHEELCHAIRS 1st 2nd 3rd male classified and 1st 2nd 3rd female classified (any category) The award ceremony will take place during the lunch. At the end of the races, all other athletes are kindly requested to change their clothes as quickly as possible and reach Whirlpool plant for lunch. Athletes returning to Continental Hotel or Centro Commerciale Gavirate on their competition vehicles have to be VERY CAREFUL and KEEP THE RIGHT LANE as the road from Voltorre to Gavirate is no more closed to the traffic. 5. CHANGING ROOMS AND TOILETS: • Centro Commerciale, Gavirate (approx. 2 km from arrival) (map ref. 3) • Società Canottieri Gavirate lake front road (approx. 1 km from arrival) • Continental Hotel (only for athletes lodging the night of 10 April) There are toilets for disables in: Bardello close to the departure, in Voltorre close to arrival at ERG filling station, at Whirlpool plant were we will have lunch. 6. PARKING: • Centro Commerciale, Gavirate (approx. 2 km from arrival) (map ref. 3) • Società Canottieri Gavirate lake front road (approx. 1 km from arrival) ONLY ORGANISERS’ CARS are allowed to drive to Bardello. People escorting athletes, after having parked their cars on level B in Centro Commerciale, Gavirate, can walk to the departure point in Bardello (approx. 500 meters) than walk back to get the car. Drive in the opposite direction of the race, to the arrival area and, after having shown the GREEN PASS, park the car along the road or in the parking before the arrival point in order to drive the athletes to the changing rooms in Gavirate or Continental Hotel after the race. (Cars parked along the racetrack will not be allowed to move until arrival of the last competitor). ATTENTION: the athletes that don't have companions can use the mini-bus shuttle of the organization after the competition: to ask in reception office (Marinetta) 2 7. AWARD CEREMONY: after the symbolic ceremony at the end of the race, during the lunch there will be the official award ceremony . All athletes will receive a gadget and prizes in kind, there has been allocated a fund, which will be divided in “vouchers” according to the arrival order between the following categories: WHEELCHAIRS: HANDBIKE TANDEM: T51 (M/F) dal 1° al 3° DIV. A (M/F) dal 1° al 3° ASS. MASCH. dal 1° al 3° T52 (M/F) dal 1° al 3° DIV. B (M) dal 1° al 15° ASS. MISTO dal 1° al 3° T53/T54 (F) dal 1° al 6° DIV. LUNCH: Whirlpool canteen, street Moro in Cassinetta of Biandronno, VARESE, facing Continental Hotel (map ref. 6). Cars and minibuses taking athletes can enter showing the ORANGE PASS, got together with race number. The lunch offered to everybody by Whirlpool Europe, it’s self-service, from 12 to 14 PM. To deliver the LUNCH-TICKET to the entry of the Canteen. 9. ADVICE: Check carefully on your map the dislocation of all places in order to decide where you want to park the car, if you want to be picked up after the arrival or if you prefer to reach the Hotel or changing rooms with your vehicle. Please note that all athletes must be FISD memberships (or similar foreign Federation) and have the athletic fitness certificate. Foreign athletes competing for the first time in Italy are requested to show the functional medical classification certificate. Organizers do not take any responsibility for damages to person or things, which may occur during the race. See you in Varese! Lombardy is a region of Northern Italy with a territory whose structure includes, from the physical-geographical point of view, a very important portion of the Alps and the adjacent Po plain with a little part of the Northern Apennines. This situation is due to the complexity of the landscape with its great diversity of historical and human aspects, frequently studied and described, but also the same physical elements which are, owing to their interest, worthy of conservation as part of the cultural heritage. As in many other Italian regions and provinces, also in Lombardy the exigence of describing and making available sites and peculiari- ties of the landscape arose, together with the suggestion of specific naturalistic tours, by means of relative guidebooks, monographs and so on. The Authors of the present work (as a part of the national research programme on ‘Geosites and Italian Landscape’) made a census of geomorphosites in Lombardy in order to their improvement, conservation and availability, both on the tourist and the scientific level. From the operating point of view, because of the high heterogeneity of the Lombard physical landscapes, it has been necessary to dif- ferentiate three main areas: Alps, Po plain and Apennines.
