Farewell Celebrations for President Carol Klimas Several on and off-campus events in May celebrated president Carol Klimas’ retirement after 11 years of service. The festivities began with a surprise all school assembly where Mrs. Klimas received many gifts including an outdoor wooden bench decorated with the fingerprints of all students, faculty, and staff members. Soon after, an ice cream social was held in Rob Hall for all students, faculty, staff and community members. Tom and Janna Dresing hosted parents and alumni for a more formal gathering and toasted her many noteworthy accomplishments that have well-positioned the school for a promising future. Finally, handwritten notes from near and far showered Mrs. Klimas’ office offering messages of thanks, admiration and best wishes. Over the last year, the marketing department, in conjunction with the Leadership Team and Board of Directors, has been busily working on a branding refresh project for Lake Ridge Academy. On July 1, 2018, Mr. Mitch White assumed leadership of Lake Ridge Academy as the school’s 8th Head of School since our founding in 1963. Mr. White joins our community after serving as a Dean at The Weber School, a grades 9 through 12 independent Jewish school in Atlanta. We sat down with Mr. White to learn more about him, his family and his goals as he settles into his new position and town.

I’ve supplemented my work experiences with formal education, a law degree (misspent youth!) as well as masters degrees in independent school leadership and teaching.

What were your initial impressions of Lake Ridge Academy?

Two words came to mind after my initial visit to campus: thoughtful and generous. Carol Klimas included Shelby in our initial conversation, which went a long way to making us both feel comfortable. Barb Ridel made sure I had coffee for my 7:15 a.m. meeting in Bettcher. Wade Zwingler brought me donuts, but only after asking the previous day if I like them. (Who doesn’t, really?) collaborating with Mike Shaulis and the academic leadership Rachael McCray assured me that if we ended up at the school, team to support and develop our tremendous faculty. As Ava and Jackson get older, we hope to show them more of our country and eventually the world. I like to read, and I do the N.Y. Times crossword puzzle every day. I aspire to construct a puzzle one day that is published in the Times. I love playing card games, and Ava has started to share my enthusiasm for them, which is fun. I play pretty good ping-pong; we plan to add a table in our new home, which is just around the corner from campus, in North Ridgeville.

As the pillars of our academic programs, these centers give our curriculum greater focus and depth, while providing our students a meaningful and unique continuum of learning that begins in Kindergarten and builds every year until the senior year.

Many exciting curriculum developments and noteworthy student achievements have occurred within each center over the last year that exemplify the success of our centers as a premier academic model.

Center for Global Citizenship

Global and International Studies Program Graduates First Global Scholar The Global and International Studies Program, the graduate certificate program of the Center for Global Citizenship, proudly graduated its first Global Scholar, Riya Lakkaraju ’18. The elective program requires students to conduct an in-depth, two-year research project on a self-selected Area of Study that is supported by their academic study of world history, world literature, political and economic realities, health and environmental factors and foreign language. Students must participate in cross-cultural opportunities such as extracurricular clubs and travel and/or travel-equivalent opportunities. Each Global Scholar prepares a significant thesis paper describing their topic, research findings, and recommendations to address their topic.

Riya’s thesis topic, Women’s Decision-Making Autonomy and the Reproductive Health of Child Brides, investigated the co-relation of a woman’s age at marriage and her access to reproductive healthcare in the impoverished countries of India, Ghana, and Guatamala. Working with a Harvard statistician, her thesis required her to compile and analyze raw data that she gathered from governmental sources, giving her an introduction to college- level statistical analysis. Riya offered public policy recommendations to combat child marriage when she defended her thesis to a nine-member panel.

15 Funding Excellence and Opportunity Lake Ridge Academy’s 50th Anniversary Campaign Far Exceeds Fundraising Goals

December 31, 2017 marked the last day of funds just 75% of its educational program. However, at just $2.2 million, Lake Ridge the 50th Anniversary Campaign, which The remaining 25% of funding must come Academy’s endowment is relatively small began on July 1, 2010 and was publicly from other sources. At the time, Lake support from non-tuition resources and Ridge Academy hoped to raise generous donors who believe in education. When you consider the campaign’s $12,000,000 – and did. The Annual Fund, Our Highest Priority

The large majority of the campaign donors gave to the Annual Fund and offered other unrestricted gifts. In funding the most mission-based priorities at the school, these donors brought continued excellence to the school.

Every donor who gave to the Annual Fund advanced our long-term Vision Beyond 50 by helping to create our three centers of excellence – years ahead of schedule. Annual Fund dollars sustain small class sizes (by funding greater numbers of teachers as needed when enrollment grows), support our athletes, preserve our campus, and bring new technology to campus.

In nearly every year of the campaign, 100% participation came from the Board of Directors, Alumni Council, full-time administrative staff members, and teachers. Parent participation more than doubled during the campaign and now represents a majority of families. Alumni support also continues to grow and comes close to the national average.

“ W e didn’t know that when our first daughter started in 2003, but it has become evident to us over the years that an investment in Lake Ridge Academy, is, in fact, an investment in the holistic education of our youth. We feel the impact of our gift to the Annual Fund as 1963 Society members is significantly multiplied by the educators, administrators and entire Lake Ridge Academy community.” – Parent of ’09, ’16, ’18 Alumnae

16 Scholarships and Special Funds

In addition to generous Annual Fund support, many donors opted to designate their gifts to specific scholarships and programs. Sometimes gifts were utilized in the years in which their gifts were made while other times, donors preferred to create endowment funds to invest their gifts for future growth. Some donors chose to honor family members by giving generously to name endowed funds. “ Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving my daughter one of the greatest gift of all...a wonderful Donors’ gifts to scholarships attracted education!” talented students, offered financial assistance to families who could not – Parent of ’16 Alumna otherwise consider a Lake Ridge Academy education for their children, and grew our enrollment faster than any other school in the State of Ohio. 50th Anniversary Campaign Donors of $50,000 or More

The 50th Anniversary Campaign’s top donors made Lake Ridge Academy one of their philanthropic priorities by funding more than 80% of the campaign’s $17.5 million total. These donors inspired more donors to follow their leading example during the life of the campaign. Many of these donors made gifts to many designations, and these are some of their favorite projects that have made a meaningful difference for us in so many important ways.

20 Honor Roll of Donors Overall Giving July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018

Even as they are living and learning at Lake Ridge Academy, students are also making a difference for others. In the past year, our students offered thousands of volunteer hours through school-wide and individual service projects, raised thousands of dollars for local and global causes, and actively served their churches and other local organizations.

Charitable gifts to Lake Ridge Academy certainly help our own students to thrive in our excellent educational environment. But donors’ gifts also help our students to become responsible global citizens who serve others. As such, gifts to Lake Ridge Academy extend far beyond our campus borders.

In this honor roll, we gratefully recognize donors whose gifts between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 totaled $1,168,898. Thank you, donors, for your investments in our talented young global leaders!

Legacy Society

Members of the Lake Ridge Academy Legacy Society have thoughtfully planned for the school’s future through their own estate planning. Their gifts will fund scholarships, foreign languages, our Centers of Excellence, landscaping, preservation of our campus, teachers, and technology.

These donors have made gifts that will benefit their own heirs, provide a life income for retirement, or pass tax-free assets to their family members through will commitments, trusts, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and gifts of life insurance. In every case, their generous spirit will benefit generations of students in the future, and we thank them.

The Annual Fund

Donors who supported the school’s most mission-based priority – the Annual Fund – provided $293,811 to sustain our student-to- faculty ratio at a competitive 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio, support project-based coursework, and offer technology upgrades. These and many other aspects of our educational program set Lake Ridge Academy apart.

In recognition of the school’s founding year and the three men whose vision created Lake Ridge Academy, the 1963 Society and Founders Club recognize donors whose leadership gifts provide as much as 80% of the Annual Fund’s total in any given year.

All Annual Fund donors support every student, and broad community support is important at every giving level. If you are a current parent or a member of the alumni body, thank an Annual Fund donor for their gifts that make our school better each year!

* deceased 28 Carol Klimas Scholarship

As President Carol Klimas retired from Lake Ridge Academy in June 2018 after eleven years of service, the Board of Directors and other donors in the school’s community generously created the Carol Klimas Scholarship Fund to support students who model the school’s core values – scholarship, personal best, integrity and respect. One quarter of the funds were directed to an endowment fund to sustain the scholarships in perpetuity and continuously honor President Klimas for her longstanding devotion to students and their families.

Students who are new to Lake Ridge Academy and entering grades 6-11 may apply for the Carol Klimas Scholarship. Preference is given to students who have financial need, and strong candidates will exemplify actions, community service or other leadership qualities that suggests a high degree of integrity and respect for others.
