Imagined Identity and Cross-Cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE Tien-Yi Chao National Taiwan University
ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. Ritual in the “Church of Baseball”: Suppressing the Discourse of Democracy After 9/11 Michael L
Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies Vol. 2, No. 2, June 2005, pp. 107–129 Ritual in the “Church of Baseball”: Suppressing the Discourse of Democracy after 9/11 Michael L. Butterworth Baseball was among the most prominent American institutions to respond to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Tributes at ballparks across the country promised comfort to millions in shock but soon developed into rituals of victimization that affirmed the Bush administration’s politics of war, discouraged the expression of dissenting opinions, and burdened the nation with yet another disincentive to reflect constructively on its response to terrorism. This essay views the aftermath of 9/11 as a quasi-religious social drama in which ballpark tributes became a ritualized vehicle for a belligerent patriotism that sought unity at the expense of democratic discourse. Keywords: Baseball; Democracy; Patriotism; War on Terrorism; Rituals of Victimization On October 12, 2003, the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins played in the fifth game of baseball’s National League Championship Series. Thousands of Chicago fans, hoping to see their team end a 58-year World Series drought, made their way to Miami’s Pro Player Stadium and provided loyal and raucous support for the visiting Cubs. When the game reached the seventh-inning stretch, Cubs fans enthusiastically began singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” but they were quickly silenced by the stadium’s public address system and the remaining fans who belted out “God Bless America” instead. One fan in a Cubs hat and jersey lamented, “Come on, it’s a baseball game!” Only after the public display of patriotism had subsided were Cubs fans able to perform their song.1 Michael L. -

Opera on Ice worked its magic again this year, and on Saturday night the Verona Arena was a full house. The many people who had been queuing up at the entrances since early in the afternoon, something that had not happened since the good old times of the opera at the Arena, show that Opera on Ice has fully achieved its goal of bringing young people closer to opera through skating. The night’s show, which will be aired on Canale 5 at Christmas with Alfonso Signorini and Costanza Calabrese as Masters of Ceremonies, showcased the world’s best skaters along with new opera talents accompanied by the over 200 singers and musicians of the Verona Arena’s Choir and Orchestra, with Fabio Mastrangelo as conductor. The 2012 show included the most famous arias, some of which are part of the Arena’s 2013 programme, such as Aida, Nabucco, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Rigoletto and Roméo et Juliette. “America's Irish Tenor”
R R ONAN ONAN T YNAN T “America’s “America’s YNAN IrishIrish Tenor”Tenor” RONAN TYNAN “America’s Irish Tenor” Ronan Tynan is truly a modern day “Renaissance Man.” Faced with numerous challenges throughout his well documented life, he has persevered with enormous passion and determination. He attributes his success to his faith and the knowledge that the Man Above guides him through every door he opens. Though Ronan enjoyed singing as a boy, he did not seriously consider formal voice study until he was 33, when he was well into his residency as a physician. Ronan won both the John McCormack Cup for Tenor Voice and the BBC talent show Go For It less than one year after beginning the study of voice. The following year, he won the International Operatic Singing Competition in Maumarde, France. He made his operatic debut as Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly , and concert repertoire in performances of Verdi’s Requiem , Mendelssohn’s Elijah , Handel’s Messiah , Rossini’s Stabat Mater , and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria . In 1998, Tynan joined Anthony Kearns and John McDermott (later Finbar Wright) as The Irish Tenors, an instant worldwide sensation. Other than his concert schedule, Tynan has performed for countless dignitaries. Notable performances include: The 80th birthday celebration of former President George H.W. Bush in 2004, the Funeral of President Ronald Reagan in the summer of 2004, The White House Governors’ Ball in February 2007, The White House St. Patrick’s Day Reception in 2008 which was attended by members of the U.S. -

ISU Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients Revealed
ISU Lifetime Achievement Award recipients revealed Living legends Jayne Torvill/Christopher Dean (GBR), Tamara Moskvina (RUS) and Alexei Mishin (RUS) received the ISU Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented by Olympic Ice Dance Champion Charlie White and Olympic Ice Dance silver medalist Tanith White, the digital show on Saturday, July 10, united Figure Skating of the present, past and future. British Ice Dancers Torvill and Dean revolutionized the sport with their immortal “Bolero” that won them Olympic gold in 1984. But there is so much more to them than the “Bolero”. Torvill and Dean brought Ice Dance to another level. Their passionate Rhumba Original Set Pattern Dance from 1994 has been developed into a Compulsory Dance, for example. They continued to create unique programs in shows and tours and as choreographers. “From our point of view it has been a life giving exercise. We didn’t know that we would still be involved/a part of [Figure Skating], this far into our lives and that was over 30 years ago, and we’re still doing it, maybe we shouldn’t be doing it but we are doing it and still enjoying it as well.” Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin were successful Pair Skaters end of the 1960s, winning medals at the ISU World and European Championships. While they were technically ahead of their time as skaters, they created their true legend as coaches. They have been coaching for more than 50 years and educated generations of Figure Skaters. Moskvina’s Pairs have won a total of 63 medals at Olympic Games, ISU World and European Championships, which makes her the most successful Pair Skating coach in the World. -
