A curbside crack in this study was defined as a linear space (under 20 mm in width) between the asphalt pavement and curbstone. The species composition of plants invading curbside cracks was surveyed in 38 plots along the serial National Route, over a total length of 36.5 km, in Fukuoka City in southern Japan. In total, 113 species including native plants (83 species, 73.5%), perennial herbs (57 species, 50.4%) and woody plants (13 species, 11.5%) were recorded in curbside cracks. Buried seeds were also obtained from soil in curbside cracks, which means the cracks would possess a potential as seed bank. Incidentally, no significant differences were found in the vegetation characteristics of curbside cracks among land-use types (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, P > 0.05). From these results, curbside cracks would be likely to play an important role in offering habitat for plants in urban area. -

India Naise M J and D G Bhadange Department of Botany, ShriShivaji College, Akola (MS) India 444003 [email protected] ABSTRACT Medicinal plants are the wealthy source of antibacterial agents and curatives.The selected plant, Anisomeles indica (L) O. Ktze is an aromatic under-shrub, belongs to family Lamiaceae. This plant is generally found at higher elevations throughout Indian subcontinent. The plant is used as folk medicine by the tribals and villagers inhabiting in Satpuda ranges, predominantly in the treatment of intestinal disorder and intermittent fever. This paper deals with investigation on invitro antibacterial activity of crude leaf extracts of A. indica plant against selected pathogenic bacterial strains. All the tested bacteria were found to be highly susceptible to the crude extracts of A. indica. The most effective activity was observed in methanolic extract with maximum zone of inhibition ranging from 13 mm and 10 mm againstB.subtalis and S.typh irespectively. The aqueous extract shows comparatively less inhibition ranging from 10 mm and 9 mm in B. subtilis. During my last temporary teaching appointment in a secondary school of Palermo, I noticed a strange creeping knotweed growing at the base of a heap of sand and crushed stones, remnant of an abandoned construction site in the inner playground of the school. Investigating the Foliage of Indigofera Astragolina for Their Nutritive and Antinutritive Composition

Dangoggo and 1*A.U.Itodo 1Department of Chemistry, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, Nigeria 2Department of Chemistry, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria ___________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT The fresh foliage of Indigofera astragalina collected from Gwiwa and Arkilla low cost areas of Wamakko local government area of Sokoto state, Nigeria were dried, powdered and subjected to nutritive and anti – nutritive investigation. The n-hexane, methanol, and water extracts prepared from the leaves were found to contain oxalates, phytate,tannins and cardiac glycosides, The proximate composition revealed the presence of moisture (51.00 ± 0.50 % fresh weight), ash (8.17 ± 0.58 % dry weight, DW), crude lipid (5.0 ± 0.5 % DW), crude fibre (2.67 ± 0.29 % DW), crude protein (8.23 ± 0.11 % DW) and carbohydrate (75.94 ± 0.64%). The Anti – nutritive compositions which are oxalate (2.26 ± 00mg/100g), phytate (12.26 ± 0.01mg/100g), cynogenic glycoside (0.24 ± 0.00mg/100g) and tannins (3.05 ± 0.02mg/100g). They also contained vitamin C (21.13mg/100g). The results of the analyses were compared with other green leaves consumed. These results releaved that the leaves of Indigofera astragalina contained medicinal agents.
