Welcome to St. Stephen! You are welcome here. Join us in prayer and worship of almighty God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. About the Parish St. Stephen Byzantine Catholic Church, led by the Holy Spirit, is called to evangelize – to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We commit ourselves to welcoming and caring for all of God's children. We are a parish of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Eparchy of Parma, an eparchy of the Byzantine Ruthenian Metropolitan Church sui iuris of Pittsburgh. Bishop Milan (Lach) of Parma is our bishop. Archbishop William (Skurla) of Pittsburgh is our Metropolitan. We are in communion with our holy father Francis, the Pope of Rome. “We are Catholics with the common heritage of our Orthodox brothers but in unity with the Holy Father in Rome.” – Bishop Milan The miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Klokočov celebrates its 350th anniversary this year, and the Eparchy of Parma is blessed with our own copy of the icon. In the Eparchy of Mukačevo, there were three miraculously weeping icons of the most holy Theotokos, venerated with great devotion and love. Our holy mother, seeing the sufferings of oppressed people, sympathized with them in a visible manner, miraculously shedding tears in various places. This first occurred in 1670 when, through her weeping icon in the small village of Klokočov (in present-day Slovakia), Mary showed her protection over the peasants suffering from the war between the Protestant noblity and the Catholic Royal House of Habsburg.

Basic characteristics: The Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia („řécko- katolícka církev“in Czech) is one of the twenty-two Catholic Churches of the Eastern rite. Originating in the Constantinopolitan traditions it uses Byzantine-Slavic rite in the liturgy. Canonically, it is part of the Catholic Church, respecting the authority of the successor to St. Peter the Apostle, the high priest of Rome. One of its other specifics in comparison to the Latin Church lies in granting the sacrament of priesthood to married men. The liturgical life in the Greek Catholic Church is diverse and plentiful. Liturgy is the most important means of not only prayer, but also theologi- cal cognition and spiritual life. Its disciplinary order is present in the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches which together with the Code of Can- non Law from 1983 and apostolic constitution Pastor bonus from 1988 create the current legal order of Catholic Churches. It was promulgated in 1990 by Pope John Paul II.

  • Presentation of the Preaching Activity in the Greek-Catholic Church in Slovakia
E-Theologos, Vol. 2, No. 1 DOI 10.2478/v10154-011-0007-0 Presentation of the Preaching Activity in the Greek-Catholic Church in Slovakia Ľubomír Petrík University of Prešov in Prešov, Greek-Catholic Theological Faculty Introduction The Greek-Catholic Church in Slovakia in an integral and living constitu- ent of the Catholic Church. It is characteristic for the Byzantine rite 1, which is one of the eastern rites. It is used by the Orthodox and the Melchits. In the Slovak republic, according to the census conducted in 2001, the Greek-Catholic Church with the number of its faithful reaching 219 831, was the third largest church after the Roman-Catholic and the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. 2 On 30 January 2008, Holy Father Benedict XVI elevated the Greek- Catholic Church to the status of metropolitan church sui iuris with its seat in Prešov. He elevated the Prešov eparchy to the status of archeparchy and the seat of the metropolia, the apostolic excharchy in Košice to the status of eparchy and founded a new Bratislava eparchy by its detaching from the Prešov eparchy. He named Ján Babjak SJ, then the Prešov eparch vladyka, to be the first Prešov metropolitan archbishop, exarch vladyka Milan Chautur CSsR, then the Košice exarch, to be the first Košice eparch, and a priest and the protopresbyter (protopriest) in Bratislava, father Peter Rusnák, to be the first Bratislava eparch. Thereby, a new period in the history of the Greek-Catholic Church in Slovakia began. The priests of the Greek-Catholic Church in Slovakia realise that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ“ (Romans 10, 17).

  • The History of Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia
E-Theologos, Vol. 1, No. 1 DOI 10.2478/v10154-010-0004-8 The History of Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia prof. ThDr. Peter Šturák, PhD. University of Prešov in Prešov, Greek Catholic Theological Faculty Ul. biskupa Gojdiča 2, Prešov, Slovakia [email protected] The most important event in the history of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia was a visit of Holy Father John Paul II in Prešov on 2nd July 1995. The first steps of the pontiff led to the Cathedral of John the Baptist, where he commemorated bishop-martyr Pavol Peter Gojdič, in current times blessed. The pontiff did not commemorate only bishop of Prešov – Pavol Peter Gojdič, but also all those priests and believers who were suf- fering because of their faith and fidelity to Rome. Holy Father in his speech said: “The Eastern and Western local Churches of the one universal Catholic Church differ between themselves by the liturgical, theological, spiritual and disciplinary patrimony. They have their own specific history and present manner of living.” I would like to scope exactly the history as well as the current times of the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia. Many people ask us Greek Catholic about our roots and origin. Al- though Greek Catholic eparchy in Presov was established only in 1818, the Greek Catholic Church in Slovakia considers itself to be the follower of the Cyril and Method’s heritage. This heritage consists of: 1. The eastern spirituality 2. a liturgy in folk language 3. an unity with Rome.1 Similar response to this questions was mentioned by the Holy Father in above mention speech, when he said: “ In history there were various occasions where it was very difficult to preserve this model, which con- nected the different traditions with a requirement of unity… But your presence is the expressive testimony of fidelity to such original model 1 VASIĽ, C., SJ.: Gréckokatolíci – Dejiny – osudy- udalosti.
