May 10, 1961 Charles Campbell b, 1959 Richard Day Third Generation Richard Day (1753-1837/1) was probably the grandson of Peter Day (d. 1760), the first known lessee of Standen, a farm near Bid­ denden in the "Weald of Kent," England. This 1 70 acre farm, with its attractive, half-timbered sixteenth-century house, was to be the seat of the Day family for nearly a hundred and fifty years, until the death of Charles Day (1835-1873), a nephew of Charles Day of Philadelphia. The family record traces the pedigree of the Days from Peter, the third great-uncle of Charles Day of Philadelphia, and tells that Peter's son Charles (1717-1795) was a great-great uncle of Charles Day. It is unlikely that one is a nephew of both father and son so Peter was doubtless the direct ancestor of this family. The family record starts with an agreement between Thomas Knight, owner of Standen, and Peter Day for the sale of growing wood there in 1727. How much earlier the Day family lived at Stan­ den is not indicated in the Day book. The rent book, and other fami- 1y papers, show that Peter Day continued to lease the farm until his death in 1760. His son Charles then took up the lease and at his death in 1795 his nephew Richard Day, of this line, became the lessee. In 1824 he retired when his sons Peter and Solomon renewed the lease. The annual rents for Standen ranged from £68 to £84 between 1739/40 and 1764, and were paid quarterly. During this time Standen was owned by the Knight family. Then Catherine Knight, widow of Thomas, II, willed it to her adopted son Edwin Austin, a brother of novelist Jane Austin. 7 Members of the Day family were called yeomen in the records, a degree below the gentry and denoting "one having free land ... qualified to serve on juries, vote for knights of the shire, and other privileges." Richard Day (1753-1837), with whom this line defintely begins and whose wife is not named, had ten children. The seventh being Richard, of this line. Richard Day, Jr., Farmer Fourth Generation Richard Day, Jr. (1789-Dec. 11, 1834)(2) was married in 1810 to Elizabeth

Američka povijest 19. stoljeća obilježena je radom vrlo poznatog i utjecajnog medievista Henryja Charlesa Lee. Bio je američki povjesničar, izdavač i novinar. Njegov otac bio je Isaac Lea, slavan izdavač i zoolog. Djed mu je bio Mathew Carey, rođen u Irskoj, ali je imigrirao u Sjedinjene Američke Države gdje je upoznao Benjamina Franklina i počeo raditi u njegovoj izdavačkoj kući. Carey je nastavio s izdavačkim poslom, pokušavajući stvoriti jednu od najuspješnijih izdavačkih kuća. Tiskao je djela Thomasa Jeffersona, Waltera Scotta i mnogih drugih. Careyjev rad nastavili su Isaac Lea, a zatim i njegovi unuci Henry Charles Lea i Mathew Carey Lea. Školovan je kod kuće.     From "Frontier"to Center City: The Evolution of the Neighborhood of the HistoricalSociety of Pennsylvania THE HISToRICAL SOcIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA found its permanent home at 13th and Locust Streets in Philadelphia nearly 120 years ago. Prior to that time it had found temporary asylum in neighborhoods to the east, most in close proximity to the homes of its members, near landmarks such as the Old State House, and often within the bosom of such venerable organizations as the American Philosophical Society and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia. As its collections grew, however, HSP sought ever larger quarters and, inevitably, moved westward.' Its last temporary home was the so-called Picture House on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Hospital in the 800 block of Spruce Street. Constructed in 1816-17 to exhibit Benjamin West's large painting, Christ Healing the Sick, the building was leased to the Society for ten years. The Society needed not only to renovate the building for its own purposes but was required by a city ordinance to modify the existing structure to permit the widening of the street. Research by Jeffrey A. Cohen concludes that the Picture House's Gothic facade was the work of Philadelphia carpenter Samuel Webb. Its pointed windows and crenellations might have seemed appropriate to the Gothic darkness of the West painting, but West himself characterized the building as a "misapplication of Gothic Architecture to a Place where the Refinement of Science is to be inculcated, and which, in my humble opinion ought to have been founded on those dear and self-evident Principles adopted by the Greeks." Though West went so far as to make plans for 'The early history of the Historical Soiety of Pennsylvania is summarized in J.Thomas Scharf and Thompson Westcott, Hisiory ofPhiladelphia; 1609-1884 (2vols., Philadelphia, 1884), 2:1219-22.

    Oliver Evans (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY Oliver Evans (September 13, 1755 – April 15, 1819) was an American inventor, engineer and businessman born in rural Delaware and later rooted commercially in Philadelphia. He was one of the first Americans building steam engines and an advocate of high pressure steam (vs. low pressure steam). A pioneer in the fields of automation, materials handling and steam power, Evans was one of the most prolific and influential inventors in the early years of the United States. He left behind a long series of accomplishments, most notably designing and building the first fully automated industrial process, the first high-pressure steam engine, and the first (albeit crude) amphibious vehicle and American automobile. Born in Newport, Delaware, Evans received little formal education and in his mid-teens was apprenticed to a wheelwright. Going into business with his brothers, he worked for over a decade designing, building and perfecting an automated mill with devices such as bucket chains and conveyor belts. In doing so Evans designed a continuous process of manufacturing that required no human labor. This novel concept would prove critical to the Industrial Revolution and the development of mass production. Later in life Evans turned his attention to steam power, and built the first high-pressure steam engine in the United States in 1801, developing his design independently of Richard Trevithick, who built the first in the world a year earlier. Evans was a driving force in the development and adoption of high-pressure steam engines in the United States. Evans dreamed of building a steam-powered wagon and would eventually construct and run one in 1805.
