Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Douglas County—home of Omaha—increased 11.5 percent, while neighboring Sarpy County grew 29.6 percent. Nebraska’s population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. The most significant growth has occurred in the Latino population, which is now the state’s largest minority group. From 2000 to 2010, the state’s Latino population increased from 5.5 percent to 9.2 percent, growing at a rate of slightly more than 77 percent. The black population also grew from 3.9 percent to 4.4 percent during that time. While Nebraska’s median age increased from 35.3 in 2000, to 36.2 in 2010 — the number of Nebraskans age 65 and older decreased slightly during the same time period, from 13.6 percent in 2000, to 13.5 percent in 2010. RECREATION AND PLACES OF INTEREST31 National Areas32 Nebraska has two national forest areas with hand-planted trees: the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Blaine and Thomas counties, and the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest in Cherry County. The Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Dawes and Sioux counties contains native ponderosa pine trees. The U.S. Forest Service also administers the Oglala National Grassland in northwest Nebraska. Within it is Toadstool Geologic Park, a moonscape of eroded badlands containing fossil trackways that are 30 million years old. The Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed, an archaeological site containing the remains of more than 600 pre- historic bison, also is located within the grassland.

Fishes (N = 36,211) taken from the mesohabitats represented 14 families and 49 species with the most abundant species consisting of Red Shiner Cyprinella lutrensis, Red River Shiner Notropis bairdi, Plains Minnow Hybognathus placitus, and Western Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis. Red River Pupfish Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis (a species of greatest conservation need, SGCN) and Plains Killifish Fundulus zebrinus were more abundant within prairie streams (e.g., swift and shallow runs with sand and silt substrates) with high specific conductance. Red River Shiner (SGCN), Prairie Chub Macrhybopsis australis (SGCN), and Plains Minnow were more abundant within prairie 2 streams with lower specific conductance. The remaining 44 species of fishes were more abundant in non-prairie stream habitats with shallow to deep waters, which were more common in eastern tributaries of the upper Red River drainage and Red River mainstem. Prairie Chubs comprised 1.3% of the overall fish community and were most abundant in Pease River and Wichita River.

    South Platte River Run Park Joint Project Proposal for Arapahoe County Open Spaces Funding via The South Platte Working Group July 2014 PROJECT SUMMARY Communities along the banks of the South Platte River in Arapahoe County have been working to enhance river health and recreational opportunities along the South Platte River Corridor. Over six years ago, a consortium of mayors, council members, public works directors, city managers, county commissioners and other leaders from communities along the river, formed a group known as the South Platte Working Group and have pursued various projects related to toward these goals. This group is focused on improvements in the river corridor to enhance the quality of life for citizens and have identified this River Run Park project as a high priority in achieving their goals and objectives. The South Platte Working Group (SPWG) in conjunction with the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB), and the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD) constitute the Project Partners of this multifaceted river improvement project that is intended to: • Replace failing grade control infrastructure; • Enhance recreation; • Increase access to the river; • Improve river health; and • Maintain effective flood conveyance. A concept-level design has been completed for this one-mile reach of river rehabilitation on the South Platte River in the City of Englewood and City of Sheridan between Union Avenue and the Broken Tee Golf Course Bridge. This initial project phase (Phase 1) and request for $1,292,000, will include channel improvements from the Golf Course Bridge to 1,200 feet south of Oxford Avenue, a mile of regional trail on the east bank, and park improvements north of Oxford Avenue including a cobbled beach area.

Nat. 151:164 Notes The Scientific Names Notropis stramineus (Cope) and N. ludibundus (Girard) ABSTRACT.—Two scientific names referring to the sand shiner have appeared in the literature during the past decade. A ruling by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature in 2002 (Opinion, 1991) conserved the more commonly used name, Notropis stramineus (Cope, 1865), and this name should be used rather than the name N. ludibundus (Girard, 1856). The sand shiner is a small species of minnow (family Cyprinidae) occurring most often in lotic waters of the eastern and central United States and southern Canada (Lee et al., 1980). Several scientific names have been proposed for the sand shiner; however, the name Notropis stramineus, originally Hybognathus stramineus Cope, 1865, has been the most widely used name for this species. In 1989, the name N. ludibundus, originally Cyprinella ludibunda Girard, 1856, was resurrected for the sand shiner by Mayden and Gilbert (1989). Since then, both names have appeared in the literature, leading to nomenclatural instability. In the interest of preserving nomenclatural stability, Bailey (1999) submitted a petition to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) to conserve the name H. stramineus Cope for the sand shiner instead of the slightly older but little-used name C. ludibunda Girard. Comments from ichthyologists on the case were published in the Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature [2000. 57(2):111–112, 57(3):168–172] and in March 2002 the ICZN published their ruling on the matter (ICZN, 2002).     FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L.
