Since 1980, the National Main Street Center has been working with communities across the nation to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown. The Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical means of utilizing and improving a community’s local resources and conditions. Because it is a locally driven program, all of what is done stems from local issues and concerns. The City of Clearwater was designated a Florida Main Street Community in August 1998. The program utilizes the Main Street four-point approach using the Joint Venture as its organizational branch. The Joint Venture is made up of a City Council (formerly Commission) appointed member, the Executive Director of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the Downtown Development Board (DDB) Chairperson, co-chairpersons from the Design, Economic Development and Promotion committees and the Main Street Program Coordinator. -
