2 Pack History 2019

Mowglis Summer 2019 began on an idyllic day as the Council welcomed 117 boys to our storied campus. Mr. Hart continued the tradition of reading The Jungle Book as the smoke from the first Campfire drifted over Gray Brothers Hall. Over opening weekend, the Den cut their teeth as leaders of the Pack, teaching the whole Camp how to make a “proper Mowglis bed.” By Monday, the first round of Industries was underway and Camp was humming. The Den marched off to Ethan Pond, Akela paddled their way to Belle Island, and Toomai made their way to Waterville Valley for the first overnight trips of the season. The Yearlings departed with Mr. Love all the way to Mt. Katahdin. Back in Camp, things felt strangely quiet with nearly half the boys gone. The contrast from the hustle and bustle of the first few days was palpable. By the week’s end, we were all back together again for the first round of Clubs and Mr. Greenwell and Mr. Robbins tag-teaming the Chapel talk. The Robbins family welcomed a new addition as we made our way to our second week. Welcome to the Mowglis Pack, Juniper! At the start of week two, it was Baloo’s turn to paddle across the lake, but this time to Cliff Island. Panther divided and conquered. Some ascended Franconia Ridge, while others visited Thirteen Falls. Mr. Bengtson joined us for a night of Mowglis songs, and hot days sent us to the Waterfront for the first evening soak of the summer. Newfound Lake, having lost the relentless chill of the first week, brought a welcome respite from the heat and served as a reminder of just how lucky we are to call Mowglis our home away from home. Saturday brought the first bathrobe-clad march to the Lodge for Heights and Weights. By lunch, athletic teams had been formed, and Land Sports Day was underway in the afternoon, cut slightly short by a fast-moving thunderstorm. The third week saw the departure of the Den to the Connecticut Lakes, Toomai to Mt. Cardigan, and Akela to the Kilkenny Ridge. Toomai saw plenty of rain, much to the lament of Brady Schwieger, who still hasn’t gotten his s’mores. Back in Camp, the boys were already looking forward to Parents’ Weekend, practicing skits, musical acts, and dorm songs. Mr. Chen had the whole Camp laughing with his Mowglis- themed stand-up comedy Campfire. Come Saturday, the Den’s rendition of “Rocky Raccoon” had us all humming the Beatles; the Khapras brought fiery renditions of 70s rock classics, and the Cubs’ improvisational exploration of what crazy at Mowglis could look like had many of us asking why 3rd-graders are reading Lord of the Flies. The Yearlings returned to Camp, and having been given their white- pocketed shirts, completed their metamorphosis and walked out of Gray Brothers Hall as members of the Junior Staff.

3 With parents gone, Ms. Burgess and Mr. Nunes were looking forward to the last week of dorm overnights. The Junior Staff spent an evening on Cliff Island with Mr. Schmidt. Baloo visited Cardigan, and Panther triumphed over the Mahoosucs, whose notch is rumored to be the “toughest mile of the Appalachian Trail.” Back in Camp, Mr. Mac entertained the boys with stories from the Marine Corps at Campfire, and alumnus Kyle Stockbridge returned to teach the boys about his adventures conquering New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers. A sweltering heat wave descended upon the Camp, providing the perfect opportunity for Water Sports Day. Gollum’s Glorious Gongs won the day, slinging greased watermelons, swimming, and Gazunga-ing their way to victory. Staff voted on Squads, which were announced after Ms. Burgess’ rousing Chapel Talk on seeking lessons from our failures. Week five began with our bidding farewell to Mt. Washington Squad. No sooner had they departed than we received word that our bid for inclusion in the National Register for Historic Places had been accepted. Liz Hengen, who wrote and submitted our application, gave a Campfire on the history of the Camp, much to the boys’ enjoyment. Later in the week, we wished the Gopher Squad well on their hike. Though their hike hit a few snags, the whole group returned safely. Back home along the shores of Newfound Lake, things were really heating up. Industries were humming. Swimming levels, Safeties, and Ribbons were earned across the Pack. Ms. Mira had the boys in boats all week long to finish her lineups in preparation for Crew Week. Finally, our sixth week, Crew Week, was upon us. Ms. Mira announced the boats, and with Mr. Stewart at the helm of Mighty Red, and Mr. Graff leading the Boisterous Blue, we were in for a week of fun and shenanigans! The Blue, aching from a four-year losing streak, was anxious to unseat the Red and prevent a dreaded “five in a row.” Alumnus Kenyon Salo joined us for the week as a volunteer staff member, providing a motivational Campfire. The evenings were spent learning cheers and making posters for the parade. Thursday saw the Racing Crews head to Wellington Beach, while Mr. Greenwell, Mr. Hart, and the Junior Staff assembled a bonfire that was at least as big as the one last year. Friday evening brought a vigorous pep rally with boys smeared in red and blue, their shouts

4 and cheers echoing across Newfound Lake like a cannon blast. As the bonfire was lit and the Racing Crew shirts handed out, the boys sang the “Mowglis Boating Song,” a reminder that no matter the outcome, we must “swing, swing together.” Race Day brought stunning weather and a crowd to match. Close to 400 people descended on Camp to cheer their respective Crews. The sun was shining on the mighty Blue as they nearly swept the day. The Racing Crews put up a valiant effort, each boat edging ahead of the other as they made their way down the course. Blue pulled ahead at the finish, marking 2019 as a BVD. Just as quickly as Crew Week began, the colors were put away and the final week of Camp was upon us. The entirety of Den had their sights set on Graduation, which would come easier to some than others. Across the Pack, there were Ribbons to be earned, Safeties acquired, and projects to finish. Wednesday saw the Cardigan Assault with Mr. Robbins at the head. Upon their return, Dennites and Staff donned their finest for a Graduates’ Dinner to remember. Thursday brought the last “regular Mowglis day” of the summer, and Friday saw 21 boys inducted into the Inner Circle. In the final hours of the summer, as boys packed their bags, the last few Dennites completed lingering graduation requirements, and tournaments found their victors, the sun shined down upon Gray Brothers, casting a long shadow of the cedar trees across the field. Just as the summer began, it ended. A warm, sunny day, with the echoes of the boys’ laughter in the air and the summer wind at our backs. MOWGLIS 2019, WE SALUTE YOU! -JAMES HART

5 THE COUNCIL The Council has been formed. They will decide the fate of your desserts. Anyone who opposes the council will be put on trial for treason. It consists of any Den- nites who have been at Camp since Toomai. The council has brought order to Den. -ALEX MCGREEVY

DEN YEAR This Is My Den year. I am trying to have the most fun I can this year. I have a lot of goals. I hope this is a great year for everybody. -SANTIAGO MARTINEZ

THIS WEEK This week I felt really homesick, but Camp is pretty fun. I got to sail and do Riflery and we also went on a canoeing trip. I really enjoy Archery and Woodworking, but Sailing is a lot of fun too. I hope these weeks fly by soon. -MIQY KHAPRA

THE RIVER WAS FLOODED On our hike, the river was flooded. We went on two trails. The river was flooded. There's one Wide River to Cross (Mowglis songbook There's One Wide River to Cross). We also saw steps on the other side of the river. The river was flooded. We ended up on the other side about a quarter of a mile from the steps. The river was flooded. -GEORGE MONTGOMERY

NEW PACK MEMBER Congratulations on the newest member of the Pack. Mowglis will always be here in the aid of raising a new member. You know what they say, it takes a village. My best wishes to all of you. -SAWYER JOHNS

6 THE FIRST WEEK OF CAMP The first week of Camp is hard. We just finished it, and tomorrow is the start of the second week. This past week, I really have missed home and I still do. My first two Industries are Woodworking and Sailing. They are pretty fun. I really want these next two weeks to fly by fast. -KASIM KHAPRA

CLUBS Today I was in Magic Club. It was very fun and exciting because it had been a long time since I had played. -WILLIAM BERGER

HAVING FUN Our dorm is really annoying, but I am still having fun at Camp. I like all of the Industries and Sign-Ups that I have done. -DEREK STRATTON

MY LAST SUMMER I have been here for five summers and this is my last summer, but it will be my first Howl of the season. I would love to complete all of my goals, but it may not turn out that way. I like to set goals for myself, and I think everyone should start with a goal. I have four goals: get my Brown ribbon, get my Orange ribbon, get my Inner Circle, and of course Graduate. I might not get all of these things, but I sure hope I do. Everyone that has goals should try to have fun at Camp. Try to work as hard as you can to earn something this summer because it will come to an end fast. Have fun, make friends, complete goals, and make this summer strong! -KYLE LITALIEN

RIFLERY I recently went to Riflery and I loved it. I got six points for my first time. I was very nervous. I also really liked dry fire. We had to do it because it started raining. The people there were kind and taught me how to reload. I enjoyed my time at Riflery. -LUCIEN SHIH

7 RAIN Why is rain a thing? I mean I guess it helps plants, but it is so annoying. On a camping trip when it rains and the trails are muddy, and your stuff is all wet, it is miserable. So rain go away. -SAM TOWER THIS IS THE YEAR We in Den have come to the agree- ment that, simply put, this is “The Year.” “What does this mean?” you might ask. Well, it means what you want it to mean. To me it means this is the year our dorm comes together as a dorm to be an exceptional Den, and to have a ton of fun in our last year. To help each other achieve our individual goals, whether that means getting one ribbon, graduating, or Inner Circle. The Den of ‘19 is going to be a Den that not only has fun, but one that leads by example and that will make the summer of 2019 a great one. -PATRICK JENKINS

FIRST WEEK OF CAMP The first week of Camp was really fun. I have Canoeing and Axemanship as Industries. I am soon getting my White ribbon after a couple of sign-ups. Panther at night is like a symphony of sounds. It is impossible to sleep. There are sleep talkers, sleepwalkers, moaners. The one person who eats supplies at night, heavy walkers going to the hydro, snores, and finally people who ripped all the time. Anyway, you eventually get used to it. Camp is always good. -ERIC HOEFER-BECKFORD

FASTEST FIRST WEEK First week has probably been the fastest first week yet. Getting back into the swing of things has been tough. I've come to realize Camp is a great place to be. 2019 has tested me, but I feel this year will make a great impact on me. -KENNY LITALIEN

8 ACCOMPLISHMENTS I think I’ve accomplished a lot in the first Mowglis week, like counting to 1000, actually trying in Swimming industry, and drinking seven cups of the crew cup water in a row. I also stacked a whole lot of wood in the Woodworking Shop. I feel like now that I’m in Akela I can now get the full Mowglis experience, like Axe- manship and Woodworking. -NATHANIEL BERGEN

BASE CAMP FOOD Any camper that has been on an overnight trip will know that food becomes a sacred thing. A simple breakfast of oatmeal will leave everyone scraping their bowls and asking for seconds, thirds, every remaining grain, then more. As for the staff, it takes endless amounts of energy to keep the relentless tidal wave of campers from the cooking station, dodging the hundreds of questions in cooking for 35+ bottomless pits. -DENTON MONTGOMERY

KRANCH Kranch is the Supreme Being of all sauce. Its power will overwhelm you and make you crazy for more. One day a mad man Named Gus Hodde mixed ketchup and ranch dressing to create the god that is Kranch. -COOPER DRAZEK

BACK AT IT AGAIN It has been two full summers since I was last here, those summers went by so fast. Usually when life goes by fast it is because you are having a great time, but as I get older I have real- ized that time gets faster when you are stuck as well... With that said this last month here (June) has been one of the longest I have experienced in a long time, I mean that in the best possible way. I was (for some reason) worried that I wouldn't be good enough for the job that Mr. Robbins asked me to do, I was worried I wouldn't fit in anymore, and I was wor- ried I would miss home. Now that I am here in the thick of things I find myself with more friends here than I had in the past, I find myself more capable than ever, and I am happy to know that I am missed at home as well. This summer has been great so far and I wish to keep it as good as it can be. Good hunting, -MR. JAMES GRAFF

GLAD TO BE BACK Aaaaalrighty boys! It's good to be back, already did a god tier Gazunga and making good progress with my Industries. It's good to be back at the place where the *smacks chest twice* pine trees grow. -MR. COSGROVE

PANTHER TENT I am living in the Panther tent and it is so great. There are just five other kids and we have one JS. Our JS, Mr. Stathos, leaves today which is unfortunate, of course. He is super chill and tells us scary stories. This is why Panther tent is the best. -GUS HODDE

GOOD FIRST WEEK The first week of Mowglis went good. The trip that Toomai took was a base camp trip to Waterville Valley. -DREW BERGEN

10 CHESS CLUB Today I went to Chess Club. Miss Eva and I played chess, and we took a long time to finish. It was funny because we only had kings and queens, we both stink at playing chess so that was funny too. Today was the best day ever! -PETER NATALE

A BOY’S PARADISE At Mowglis, the birds chirp all day and the lake is constantly refreshing and beautiful. It is like a Boy's Paradise. You can do practically anything, from the loud shouting of the coxes in Crew to some soothing time in the Craft Shop. Mowglis will forever have an impact on me and certainly many others. -HORATIO WILCOX

BASEBALL CLUB When Den was dismissed very late for unknown reasons, most Denites chose Mr Stew's Baseball Club. We warmed up by playing catch. Then Liam and Patrick chose teams. Liam chose me and the rest of the team. During the game we would have infield talks. We had to abandon the game when we heard thunder. -RORY FREEMAN

BELLE ISLAND TRIP We just came back from our Belle Island trip. There were a lot of highlights. First highlight was when me and Derek were sitting on the rock by the lake, and he slipped into the water! It was pretty funny. Next we (meaning Akela) sat by the beach. Some ducklings came up to us and they nipped our hands. The mom duck was there and she was super chill! It was awesome! -NATE GREVEN

11 INTERESTING DAY Today I went to my first ever Club. Also five new people are coming today, I hope they are nice. And I got to see a tick get cut in half! -ROBERT GOENS

GOING BY FAST Den year goes by so quick- ly. The first week is already over and it seems like I was on the plane over here yesterday. I have so many things I want to get done, and I realize that there isn't much time left. Make every moment count at Camp because you only have so much time as a camper. -ELI SALO

FUN AT CAMP So far Den year has been really fun! We went on a pack trip and it had some great views. I'm far from graduating, however, I know that my friends will help me greatly! This is the year boys! -ERIC WILLIAMS

CAMP DAYS FLY Camp days fly by fast. There is fun in each one, with new adventures and achievements. -PEYTON ELIE

PACK TRIP Den went on a pack trip this week. It didn't rain a lot and it was pretty easy overall. Everyone worked their hardest and never complained. We had a short wait at the end of the trip. -CONNOR SOUKUP

BELLE ISLAND This week we went to Belle Island. It was crazy that it was in the first three days of camp. It was pretty fun, but it rained. None of our stuff got wet, which is good. I am doing Camping and I got one requirement. Camp has been fun. -SPENCER DRAZEK

12 WATERVILLE VALLEY On the 5th day of camp we went on a trip to Waterville Valley. First, we set up three tents; a big one and two small ones. Nine kids, including me, slept in the big tent and two slept in one of the little ones. Then the two staff slept in the second small tent. Mr. Dopp slept in a hammock. The second day we went on a hike, it was awesome. On the third day we ate breakfast and we left. -JUSTIN LEON

WHY? Camper: Dear Howl, why do we need to do duties? Counselors should be the ones cleaning. Counselor: Because you’re the ones playing and making the mess! L.N.T. Leave No Trace! Camper: But you work here. Janitors work at schools! Counselor: So we’re just janitors now? The city has trash collectors, but you still need to help and put your trash into trash cans. At Camp same idea, balls into the athletics house, it gets arranged by us! Camper: But they get paid! Why don’t we? Counselor: Because you’re cleaning up a mess that you made! -JULES CAFISO

BASKETBALL At Camp, basketball is the best thing to play in free time. The feeling of winning a game of knockout is unexplainably satisfying. I'm not that good at basketball but still try. Camp has been great. -SAM PEROZEK

FIRST WEEK OF CAMP This week was very fun. It was the first week of Camp and I chose Camping and Rowboat- ing. For Clubs I chose touch football. After that we went to the Waterfront and jumped in. This week was the best. -HIRO NISHINO

13 14 CAMP IS AWESOME Camp is great. I finished all of my Den requirements, so now I can do other ribbons. I'm going for my Archery and Photography. I'm only four requirements away from the ribbon. Camp is awesome. -COLIN SOUKUP

REGULAR MOWGLIS DAYS This week has been super exciting because it has been the first regular Mowglis week oh, and the regular Mowglis days are the best days! -JUAN SAENZ

THE BEST CAMP This is the best camp in all of the world. I love all the things, but in my opinion the lake is so cold but I also like it. My best counselor is Mr. Perez. -DIEGO SAENZ

GOALS The first week of Camp went by pretty fast. The things that I had done last year had come back, but I was still a little rusty in my Industries. I want to continue Rowboating until I get my Silver ribbon since I got my safety last year. I'm also going to try to get as many Den requirements this year as I can so that I can have a lot of fun in my Den year. -NICHOLAS VENTURA

PADDLE BOARDING Today, me and Griffin went paddle boarding. We were doing pretty good until it was boats in. We were pretty far out and the strong wind was right in our faces. We couldn't move any- where! I came up with the idea to tie our paddle boards together so we could row in unison for more power. It started to work, but we started to get tired so we gave up and accepted our fate. Let's just say that me and Griffin are the best paddle boarders. -TYLER GOSS

LACROSSE IN THE WASHROOM Today at Camp Mowglis me, Zane, and Peter were in the washroom and playing lacrosse, then Mr. Williams walked in and we were laughing until he caught us. Then we all had a good laugh and played outside. -COOPER BENGTSON

FIRST YEAR This year is my first year at Mowglis. Even though it has only been a week, I have enjoyed my first few days at camp. My favorite part of Camp so far has got to be the Industries. Thanks to all the wonderful instructors here I enjoyed learning all kinds of skills. Although my abso- lute favorite Industry is Fencing, the others are still fun to me. -EVAN LAI

KRANCH This delicacy is constructed as follows: ketchup, ranch. You can also make an equally tasty sauce “Italian Kranch” as follows: Ketchup, ranch, Italian salad dressing. Stay saucy my lads! -JACK DROS

SAM PEROZEK IS A BEAST Yesterday, Sam and I faced Scott and Will in a 2 vs 2. We were down 6 to 1, when Sam scored seven points in a row. We ended up winning the game, so now I think Sam could be the G.O.A.T at Mowglis. -P.J. MUNGAH

16 CAMP IS FOREVER Can you please make it so I can come to Mowg- lis for the rest of my life until I want to move on with my life? I hope that I can still mountain bike and my hip will not get hurt again. On the Belle Island trip I was as help- ful as I could be, because that is how I like to be. -LUKE BOWEN

BEST WEEK EVER This week was the most fun week ever, I love this Camp. The counselors are nice. Mr. Harvey isn't very good at soccer, Mr. de Velasco always yells at our bunk, but he is a nice guy. Miss Eva is a good counselor too, she is so nice and helpful. Miss Sophia taught me to play vol- leyball. This is the best Camp ever. -PETER NATALE

DOORS Panther has an automatically closing door that I made on Saturday. Akela copied the design. I think I may sue them for copyright infringement. -LUCAS CERWINSKI

THE CHALLENGE Den and Akela are having the Chess Battle. See, between us we have a Simpsons and a regu- lar chess board. With the new rules, we can challenge you once a week for the board. So, we challenge you! Meet us at all free time with the chess board at our writing porch. The game begins. -ADAM BREST

PACK TRIPS Pack trips are an interesting thing that I cannot seem to grasp or understand. Why does hiking up mountains and making your legs hurt appeal to so many people? My trail name was “Big Chunker.” Why? Because I called a fuzzy bird who was jumping around in the tree a big chunker. -JACK DROS

CAMP IS GOOD So far Camp has been good. Riflery has been great! I hit my second bullseye on Friday, I believe it was a 37. Today I scored a lot of points in basketball. -SCOTT CARMICHAEL

17 DEN Den is whacked. Not in a bad way, though. First of all, we have Mr Stewart, so + 1! For some crazy reason, Carter has a Victoria's Secret umbrella, so no questions asked. Some nights, while going to bed, you'll hear screeches like a dolphin (Liam’s signature scream), and find people holding each other's faces in the dark. Also, disclaimer, if you hear a scream during Relax, it's because of Den gym. We also have weird little cheers for each other. Anyways, I can't say much more! -MATHIAS NICHOLLS

CONNECTICUT LAKES TRIP I am excited for the Connecticut Lakes trip. Den leaves tomorrow (Monday) and I cannot wait. In fact, I would, if possible, leave today. I am not, however, excited to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to look for moose on day two. It is likely that it will rain on this trip due to our dorm’s awful luck with weather, and I really hope no one forgets tent pieces. -PATRICK JENKINS

EXPLODING KITTENS Akela. The dorm of Exploding Kittens. First the contestants ready themselves for the gridlock ahead. They know one bad move could end it all, then the first card drawn enters them into a hookish battlefield. Then the Exploding Kittens comes into play and all is lost. So remember to play this game responsibly. -ZANE TULLY

18 CLUBS Today there were Clubs. I went paddle- boarding. It was awesome! Then I went to the Swimmers’ raft. It was so fun, a.k.a. a good day of Clubs. -NATE GREVEN

A GREAT WEEK This week was a very eventful week. I almost split a log on my first time doing Axemanship, I finished my toolbox, and I'm pretty sure my sports team got first or second on Land Sports Day. This week was a great week and I'm sure they will be many more. -HORATIO WILCOX

INTRUDERS ON CLIFF ISLAND This week Mr. Chen stood up and kicked out a bunch of people that were not supposed to be on Cliff Island, so Mr. Chen stood up for us. Yay and thanks, Mr. Chen! -LUKE CLIFFORD

HIGH HOPES I have so many things to complete this summer, and my hopes are high. I'm very close to three ribbons, and hoping to get two others, all this year. On top of all of that, Washington Squad, Racing Crew, Inner Circle, and Graduation are on my list. It will be challenging, but I'm looking forward to completing it. -SAWYER OLSON

THE KING OF WAKING PEOPLE UP Mr. Perozek is the unspoken king of wak- ing people up. He pulls you out of your bed and, get this, he shakes it, and if you do not get up he will take your mattress off! But all in all Mr. Perozek is a great counselor and Camp is really fun! -WYATT JOHNS

19 THE DRAGON BOW You see a dragon that is big and trying to eat you. What do you do? I would take out the greatest bow on Earth: the Dragon Bow. Just in case you don't know what the Dragon Bow is, it is the small orange Cub bow. Don't let it’s looks make you think it's bad. You can't judge a book by its looks. When someone shot the Dragon Bow and the arrow landed in the wooden target stand, which was obviously where that person was aiming for, I was shocked to see the arrow go through the wood. That's the power of the Dragon Bow. Many people have gotten bull's-eyes with the Dragon Bow. That's the accuracy of the Dragon Bow. You need accuracy and power to kill a dragon. If you get a 50 with the Dragon Bow, you get my dessert for the rest of Camp. Head down to the Archery Range, use the Dragon Bow, and get your first bullseye. -WILLIAM DUNCAN

MR.CHEN: THE CLIFF ISLAND DEFENDER This week we went on our Cliff Island trip. During our trip, Mr. Chen showed us that he was the G. N. O. A. T., Greatest Ninja Of All Time. The first time he showed us that he was the GNOAT was when he shooed off five people, for that he had the element of talking. He also used that a lot of times. Goodbye. P.S. 20 21 THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOTS Today I helped take care of the Starcraft. When we were about to look under the boat, we were alerted that someone tied a bad bowline and one of the Sunfish had drifted off. We quickly swept into action and were on the chase. A couple minutes later, as we were riding on the boat, our Kryptonite was unveiled. Boats in blew. Mr. Gulitti then had to drop us off. I had a lot of fun though. I hope people learn their Bowlines better so we don't have to chase down a boat in the future. -KASIM KHAPRA

PLYMOUTH MOUNTAIN Plymouth Mountain was fun. Everyone complained that our chocolate bars melted, and everyone fell. It was AWESOME. -RAAGHAV MITTAL

NATURE CLUB Today was Clubs, I chose Nature to learn some survival skills, it was fun. But the funniest part was that we got to drink some gratifying tea! It was an awesome experience. -JUSTIN LEON

22 TRIPS I've been on many trips so far this year. One on each week of Camp. We had a pack trip during the first week and on the second week I went with Baloo to Cliff Island. It was an experience. This week I'm going on the Connecticut Lakes trip with my dorm and we will probably have to go on another trip with a younger dorm the weeks following. -CONNOR SOUKUP

FRANCONIA RIDGE This week Panther went on our backpacking trip to Franconia Ridge. The first day was hard, but after we dropped our bags off at the campsite we went up to the summit of Liberty to watch the sunset. The second day was a little bit harder than the first day, but the ridge walk- ing had an amazing 360 degree view. The last day all we did was hike downhill to the parking lot where we played Mafia for about 2 hours until we got picked up. -NICHOLAS VENTURA

RIDGE WALKING On the Franconia Ridge pack trip, we ridge walked - it was sick! There were great views on either side of us, we were always really high up, and it was a really nice breeze. This is why ridge walking was great. -GUS HODDE

SOAK PSYCHOLOGY For many years, certain mysteries have perplexed Mowglis campers and staff. The following is not one of them. I have noticed a strange pattern during soak. In the beginning of the Beginners section, you can stand anywhere, but your head is still below the dock. In Interme- diates you can stand on the rock, but only your waist is out of the water. But in Swimmers, everyone wants to stand on the raft, where you're completely out of the water. The implica- tion? Soak should be called “Stand and Beginners do more Swimming than Swimmers. You can read the rest of my findings in an upcoming article in the American Journal of Psychol- ogy when it clears peer-review. -MR. STEWART 24 CANOEING I am great at canoeing. When I was sent out in high winds, I started to drift. Then, I got to hang onto the Waingunga buoy for for dear life. I am really good at canoeing. P.S. DREAMS At Camp I have these dreams that I am at home. It's not that I am homesick. It makes me feel like I am at home. And when I wake up, it feels like I'm still dreaming and sometimes when Connor sets off the alarm it interacts with my dreams, so that when I wake up, I think I am dreaming about Camp and I get stressed that I'm not going to graduate, but I'm pretty sure I will. -CARTER BECKFORD

T-POSES & DRAGONS So, this is it huh? Only two weeks in and my sanity already has a grim future ahead of it. The T-Posing started with Lyon, but has since spread like a disease among the other campers. I have seen some symptoms in Mr. Cosgrove as well and I can only pray it does not advance further. Additionally, some campers down at the Archery Range have become obsessed with the Dragon Bow. In actuality, the bow was intended for our youngest campers, but the low draw weight makes it inconsistent at even 10 yards. Their compulsion to use the weakest bow in Camp has led me to conclude that they've all gone mad. I can hear their calls of “T-Pose Time” and “Let us use the Dragon Bow” coming closer, so I must depart and must find a cure or else all Is lost. Pray for my success. -MR. WILLIAMS

TIME IF FLYING It is already the second week and I've gotten some progress done. Tomorrow we leave for a trip to the Lakes. I'm pretty excited. This year is going to fly by. -KENNY LITALIEN

26 DEN GYM I'm sure that many of you are wondering what a “Den Gym” is. Den gym is not a place, a routine, or a group of people, but an idea. The idea: get big. Whether you wish to get big for Crew Week, or if you wish to get big for Squads, or if you wish to get big for the sake of get- ting big, Den gym is perfect for you. Unless you aren't in Den. -LIAM JENKINS

SO LITTLE TIME As the days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months it goes by so fast. It's the fifth week and it only feels like the first. I am so hyped for Crew Week and ready for more scary stories. There's so much more to do and so little time. I feel like it will be Mrs. Holt’s Day so soon. This Camp is so fun and it is almost over. -WILL GREVEN

CONNECTICUT LAKES This past week, the Den went on the famous Connecticut Lakes trip. After setting up camp, we got to bed early the first night so that we could wake up for a sunrise paddle. We got out of bed at 4 a.m. and drove to Scott’s Bog to the sounds of ‘80s British alternative hits. At the bog, we put our canoes in as the fog lifted and the sun rose over the mountains. We paddled for a couple hours but didn't see any moose, so we drove back to the campsite for breakfast. Preparations had to be made for the evening moose hunt. We headed back out in the vans around 11:30 a.m. to find another place to paddle. Unfortunately, the Second and Third Connecticut Lakes were too windy for our liking, and the Fourth was too Canadian. After eating lunch and hanging out on the shores of the Third Connecticut Lake, we headed back to Camp. Half of us played football while the other half helped Mr. Mac get dinner started or played backgammon. And what a dinner it was. After a day and a half of a level of ration- ing that would make Stannis Baratheon proud, we went all out. Amir crushed up leftover oatmeal and used our carton of scrambled eggs as egg wash - we made onion rings and fried zucchini for a little “Den Happy Hour.” We played some jams on my speaker and hung out as Mr. Mac made tray after tray of fried food. After dinner, Sawyer discovered that the 30 ought 6 we had brought for the moose hunt had mysteriously transformed into a couple of canoe paddles wrapped in a towel. At campfire, Connor taught us about LNT as we toasted marshmallows. But the fun wasn't over yet. A quick midnight trip to the medical center with Liam and Mr. Sullivan rounded out a solid 22 hour day. The next morning, I made a breakfast burrito bar in place of our usual continental breakfast. We broke camp and headed home, stopping for surprisingly good pizza in a town along Route 3. FUN DAY Today I went tubing with the rest of Baloo. It was a lot of fun and we hit a bunch of waves. Another exciting thing I did was paddle board for the first time. They were both a lot of fun, but I think tubing was more fun because of the speed and the excitement of bouncing on the waves. -MIQY KHAPRA

SCARY STORIES Last night Mr. Gulitti came to Den to tell us stories. He told us about “the hermit.” After he was done, other members of Den shared other spooky tales about Mowglis. We stayed up late whispering to other campers about ghosts in the Green Room. So for the rest of the night, none of us went to the mines alone. -ERIC WILLIAMS

SAILING During Open Waterfront the other day me, Carter, and Eli decided to take out a sailboat. We all thought it would be a great idea even though none of us had sailed since Baloo. Once we had gotten out into the lake we decided to flip the sailboat. As we were flipping it I decided it would be cool to walk up the boat as it was flipping. It turns out that the bottom of the sailboat is very slippery and hard to walk on, so when I tried to walk on it I slipped and fell over the boat, and fell into the water. I am very good at sailing. -ALEXANDER MCGREEVY

AMAZING VIEWS On Thursday we went on Mt. Cardigan and Percival. The hike was easy and pretty short. The hike is worth it though, and the view is amazing. You can see Squam Lake at the green and I liked it a lot, so please make Panther go on that hike next year. -SEBASTIAN PHANEUF

ACCOMPLISHMENTS I WANT TO MAKE THIS YEAR Wow, this year is going by so fast. These past four weeks I've been working so hard on Den requirements, and I've been making pretty good progress on them as well. I'm nearly three- quarters of the way through my Green ribbon, I also think I'm 6 or 7 requirements away from my Gold. This year I'm also aiming for my Sharpshooters, I'm only three qualifications away! Plus some other accomplishments I want to make. Today when they announce Squads I hope they announce my name for Gopher Squad. I may also go for my Canoe Safety if I have enough time. Next year I am definitely getting my Inner Circle. P.S. Camp is good camp is great, Mr. Cosgrove lifts the golden weight. -ETHAN HEIT

THE PADDLE BOARD WAR Today I went paddle boarding for Clubs. It was a great day to be out on the water because we were frying. The paddle boarding started off pretty peacefully and I had just gotten the hang of it when a battle erupted between Mr. Ibarra and another paddle boarder. Soon, all of us were in alliance against Mr Ibarra. The Paddle Board War had begun! We were all trying to capsize Mr. Ibarra, but he would capsize anyone in his path. Finally, he stood up on his board and I shook him off! Yay! Mr. Ibarra is pretty cool, I hope I get to paddle board with him again. -KASIM KHAPRA

SUNDAY I am having a fun week. We are having Chapel today and we have Sunday cookout. -BRADY SCHWIEGER

30 THE MOWGLIS CUP The first game was a brutal blow-out. Me, Charley, and the one and only Dru Robbins. Well, we lost horribly, 8 to nothing. Game two was different. We picked new teams, then it was me, Addison, and Charley, and it was a whole new game. Bam! One to noth- ing, then we pulled one off, then they scored again, 2 to 1. Then we scored twice, 3, then they scored, 3 to 3, one more point to win it. About a half an hour of no score, then GOALl! We did it! We had pulled through. Then we all said good game and that was it. -ZANE TULLY

MAHOOSUCS The Mahoosucs were very hard. Once you are done your thighs and calves feel like someone took a baseball bat to them. The notch is very cool. It is about a mile of cold, rocky terrain that is so fun to go through. My trail name was “Bald Cap Brook” and “James.” The second one is less simple to understand, but if you ask me I will explain. -JACK DROS

BIG INFLATABLE MULTI COLORED RHINO Today during Clubs the Denites at the Waterfront had a mission: secure the big inflatable multi colored rhino. Sawyer would jump on first and start to pull himself up using it’s handles. The other De- nites including Liam, Rory, Alex, and me proceeded to grab onto Sawyer's limbs from the opposite side and try to pull ourselves up. It worked for the first part until Mr. Sullivan tried to pull himself up, in turn flipping us all over. -AMIR LAGASSE

THE MISSING CHESS PIECE Today we found a chess piece on the Den writing porch table. Now I know what you were thinking, what makes this so special, why is it Howl worthy? Well, it was lost for two weeks as of today, during Clubs two weeks ago. The piece, which had broken shortly before, had the nose broken to a sliver connecting it to the main body. After Clubs, the piece was lost. However, today the piece was found on the writing porch glued together. -GRANT WEBER

WATERSPORTS DAY On Saturday we had Watersports Day. Me and Amir did a canoe portage race. We paddled over to Baloo Cove and hoisted up the boat to our shoulders without realizing it was back- wards, so when we were walking the seat in the bow kept hitting me in the head. It really hurt. We ended up getting first place, so it was worth it. -LIAM JENKINS

32 SUMMER IS SHOOTING BY This summer has been shoot- ing by before my eyes, and my goals and requirements have as well. I truly love this Camp and will remember Mowglis for the rest of my life. THE SECOND-MOST ANTICIPATED CREW RACE This week, we had the second-most anticipated crew race of the year! Den vs. JS. The JS boat had an advantage, being 17 and all, but they were so bad that they only won by a boat length. The Den crew will be back soon for a rematch. We were not prepared well enough, but after a pre-crew week crew week of pure Den crew rowing, we will be back and ready to demolish the JS, while simultaneously breaking the all-time record. -SAWYER OLSON, SGLYNH

EVENTFUL WEEK This week was sort of eventful. My brother and Connor went out on trips. The Junior Staff challenged the Den to a race in the Crew boats. The Den boat lost by a boat length. Today they announce Squads. I'm excited to see who makes the Squads. Crew Week is coming up. We are approaching the most eventful times in Camp. We will see what will happen. P.S. THE PING PONG PORCH The Ping Pong Porch is the best place at Camp. It's the most fun activity at Camp, it's better than gaga ball, tetherball, and basketball. However, there is only one good court. All in all, ping pong is one of the best things at Camp. -COLIN SOUKUP

THE MAHOOSUCS The Manoosucs were my favorite pack trip yet, and they were great. My favorite part was the notch. In the notch you go under and over huge boulders. It was awesome. Overall the trip was great, and I can't wait for the pack trips to come. -GUS HODDE

MOUNTAIN BIKING Mountain biking is my favorite Club. I like it because you can basically go wherever you want in Camp. My favorite place to bike is the path that leads from the Upper Ballfield to the Waterfront through the Chapel. -CAELAN AKRE

I LIKE CAMP In these two weeks I did many things. In the first week I came back from the trip. We were not lucky on Trip Day because it was raining the whole way back. The trail was muddy everywhere and I also hurt my knee. And during the second week I got my highest score in Riflery. I'm very happy. And also ping pong is getting better. I love Watersports Day, but the Gazunga really hurts a lot. I like to stay in Camp. -MACSON GUI

A FUN TRIP I went on the Mahoosucs this week. It was a difficult trip but fun overall. The counsel- ors and campers were great. The food we had was fine. We had way too much oatmeal. On the second day Miss Liz fell in a mud pit. I had a lot of fun in a four person tent that had three people. -THOMAS BOULD

36 TOOMAI I did Riflery and I missed all shots. During Clubs Mr. Williams beat me in Magic of Gathering. Toomai is getting a new kid today. Toomai got moved into the Upper Dining Hall, yay! Yesterday was my birthday. -PEYTON ELIE

TUBING Today at tubing I had a lot of fun. In the first round with the other Diego, I almost lost my swimsuit, because it wasn't tied. In the second round with Zack it happened the same way, but when we were finishing we made a competition to see who falls first, and I won. -DIEGO LARREA

INDUSTRIES Camp has so many Industries, like Riflery and Archery. I am so close to my Archery ribbon. I love Archery. -MYLES HERNANDEZ

THE MUD PIT The Mahoosucs were so good and I love hiking. The best thing was when Miss Liz fell into a mud pit. The hike was pretty easy except for the notch, and that it was raining. -JUAN SAENZ

TUBING Today in tubing it was super fun because there were a lot of waves and we jumped a lot. The water was warm and with the hot weather it was perfect. I love to go tubing. P.S. The boat is super fast! -DIEGO SAENZ

GOPHER SQUAD Gopher Squad was very fun, and the weather was beautiful. First we summited Mt. Eisen- hower, and then we got to the hut. That night we watched the sunset on top of Mt. Monroe. The next day we summited Washington and Jefferson, the views were great. -LIAM JENKINS 37 CREW WEEK Today they announce boats for both the Red and Blue Crews. I'm so excited. I really hope I make Red First Form, 4- seat. I'm also kind of nervous that I won't make the First Form, but that's okay. There are so many other things that are fun about Crew Week. My personal favorite part about Crew Week is the Bonfire. I also can't wait for my parents to come see me race. It is by far the best week at Mowglis, and the one that goes by the quickest. GOPHER SQUAD This week I was on Gopher Squad and it was probably my favorite Mowglis trip of all time, closely followed by Franconia Ridge, of course. On the first day we summited Eisenhower, which was a difficult hike, probably the only very difficult part of the whole trip. Sawyer had to carry Sam’s pack most of the way and we dubbed him “Strong Man,” although he accu- mulated other trail names later, such as “Ginger Soy,” an ingredient in a chicken packet, and “Cheesy Rockstar” for reasons I won’t get into. After Eisenhower, we submitted Franklin and went to Lakes of the Clouds hut, where we played Catan, my favorite board game, except it was “Family Style” Catan which, for certain reasons, made the person who placed their settlement first win. But, it was still fun. We hiked Monroe and watched the sunset on the summit. This howl is already too long so I’ll end it here. Overall, Gopher Squad was so good, love you New Hampshire. -NOEY ARONESTY

CREW WEEK Crew Week is the most Mowglis of weeks. As of today the entire Camp is divided into Blue, Red, and Purple, cheers of all sorts, screaming idiots, and crazy people. I love it! But my favor- ite part is the Blue Banner, Scarlet Journal, and Purple Pamphlet. Making fun of people is the funniest thing. It’s all in good heart, though. Racing Crew sounds awesome as well. Hanging out with our Crew, making posters, and chilling. The competition between Crews is awesome. Each person believes they are going to win, but one side pulls out. Unity is essential to win, so in a way the entire Camp is separated into sides, but they are united at the same time. -COOPER DRAZEK

GOPHER SQUAD Gopher Squad ROCKS! At first I didn’t want to be in a Squad (for some dumb reason), but now I know how dumb that was. We started off with Eisenhower, which had a great view. Once we made it to LOC (Lakes of the Clouds), we had a looooooong tournament of Caton, “The Family Version.” And I’m not going to lie, the beds were extremely comfortable. We then woke up to a three course breakfast. Once we made it up to Washington, we stayed for a while and bought a bunch of stuff at the shop. Anyways, due to classified business, that is all that I am contractually allowed to speak of. -MATHIAS NICHOLLS 45 TIME IS FLYING BY This summer has gone by super fast. I had loads of fun on Washington Squad. All the huts were amazing. Lakes of the Clouds was my favorite hut. The views were amazing as well. That night me, Connor, and Mr. Perozek ran up Mt. Monroe. When we got up there we took pictures of the twilight from the sun’s final show. When we got down I had some warm cocoa, and after the cocoa we star gazed with the hut’s telescope. SAILING This week me and Colin went sailing. It was awesome, I steered the boat, and Colin set the sail. It was fairly high winds and me being the steerer that I am, I almost crashed the boat four times, but luckily every time I steered us away from the rocks. Every time this happened Colin would try to push me out of the steering position, but I wouldn’t budge. When “boats in” was called we tried to get back, but the wind prevented us from doing this. Those 20 minutes were full of failed attempts to dock the boat. Finally, on about the 100th try, we got back to Mowglis and de-rigged the boat. -GUS HODDE

OVERLORD This week Mrs. Mira made Overlord Soukup. Now Zach and I follow him chanting “Overlord Soukup.” He seems like he doesn’t like it, but I know he does. -RICHARD O’DAY

LACONIA Today we went to Laconia. All was good, we got Dunkin Donuts. We went to perform at the church and then got snacks. We helped unload some food. Then we put our instruments in the space shuttle and came back to Camp. -ZACH OLSON

BUSY AT CAMP I just had Magic the Gathering Club. It was fun. Mr. Cosgrove found a giant bag of Skittles and we got to eat some. On Woodsman’s Day, Gollums Glorious Gongs won the big competi- tion again, like we did for the greasy watermelon on Watersports Day. Blue Crew has a good boat, but we could still pull through for an RVD. -THOMAS PATINO

49 THE END OF WEEK FIVE It’s the end of week five, isn’t that CRAZY!?!? Time flies in here. I’m the Akela mom and I’m so happy with my kids. We have a strong relationship based on respect; they respect me and I respect them. I’m also the Arts & Crafts Instructor and the Craft Shop is my happy place. I always play music, and there’s this chill vibe inside. I love this place so much, I feel like it’s my second life, and I’m 100% sure that I’ll come back more times in the future. Tomorrow it’s the beginning of Crew Week and I’m so excited. Everyone is saying that it is their favorite week at Camp because everyone is wild, and I really can’t wait to get wild! FELLING On Wednesday I went felling across the road. It was a lot of work, but eventually my tree fell down. After that, I helped Eric limb the tree that he felled. Now I am very close to my Axe Test, which is the only thing stand- ing between me and Graduation. -LIAM JENKINS

FIRST CREW WEEK This is my second year here at Mowglis, and last year I only stayed for four weeks. This is the first time I will get to experience Crew Week. I am so hyped! I have Red Crew family, so I can’t wait to see a RVD. -ERIC WILLIAMS

AGAIN AND AGAIN Another summer at Mowglis is almost over. It’s incredible how fast the time passes here. It’s like a roller coaster. At first you’re excited and nervous for the incoming summer. Then, you go through plenty of good moments, high and low points. But eventually, you always enjoy the ride and you always want to go again, again, and again. -MR. BRAVO

AXEMANSHIP I finally did Axemanship. I was avoiding it all summer, but I finally did it and it was so fun! Now I can’t get enough of it! I am sad for the end of Camp, but also I am excited to get home. I will miss Camp, but I will come back next year. -THOMAS PATINO

THE DEN OF 2019 Five years ago, I came to this Camp for my first summer on Senior Staff. I was the Lead Dorm Staff in Toomai, in charge of a bunch of 10 year old boys. Today, I'm proud to say that they've become great young men. I can truly say that these past five summers have been the best of my life. I will always remember the trips, the inside jokes, the Crew Weeks, and the influence you've all had at Camp. I am beyond proud of all of your accomplishments - you earned close to 90 Ribbons as a Dorm, all of you Graduated, 14 of you made the Inner Circle, 12 of you made Racing Crew, and, most importantly, you all served as great role models for the rest of Camp. The friendships you've made here will last your lifetime. Never lose your sense of adventure or your sense of humor, and remember that any adventure is only as good as the friends you make along the way. Den of 2019, I salute you! -MR. CONNOR B. STEWART

ROCK CLIMBING I have been doing Rock Climbing the whole sum- mer! I loved it! I am two requirements away from my ribbon, but today was the last day. 52 SEVEN WEEKS I walked into Camp this year thinking I would be here for four weeks. Tomorrow I will walk out having stayed for seven weeks instead. In the beginning of this year and after Parents Weekend I felt very homesick, but I know staying for seven weeks was worth it. This year I got my Gold ribbon (my first ribbon)! Mr. Stewart and Mr. B. have been so encouraging. I also got my first knife and went on my first pack trip. The lessons I have learned and the memories I know this year, I will never forget. -KASIM KHAPRA

This year I’ve gotten three ribbons, and I will take the test for Sailing to see if I get my Golden Anchor, then I will have nine ribbons! GREAT SUMMER This summer has been great, I have gotten requirements, gone on base camp trips, climbed mountains, and much more. 54 A GOOD SUMMER This has been a very good summer because I have been able to help out people and and staff with lots of things. I am limited to do the things I like to do. BITTERSWEET This year has been bittersweet. I’ve been here since Baloo and it is finally my Den year. My Den year has been the best year for me at Camp. Our dorm has come together, we have gone on amaz- ing trips, and enjoyed being the oldest in Camp. Last year the Den was split into many groups and Crew Week didn’t help with that. Having the whole dorm as one team makes the summer ten times more enjoyable. I don’t want this summer to end and to depart from my dorm mates that I have spent four summers with. My days as a camper at this wonderful place are winding down. I enjoyed making amazing experiences with the Den of 2019. So, Den of 2019, I salute you. -ELI SALO

Near the middle of the summer I had a lot of doubts about graduating, but I felt better thanks to help from Mr. Hart (p.s. Thanks a bunch for that!) and encouragement from my dorm. Though I’ve only been together with my dorm mates for two years, I’m proud to be part of the family. -ERIC WILLIAMS

TIME PASSING BY Hours turn into days, days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and soon it’s week seven. This year I got my Tennis and Sharpshooter’s. I got 2nd Form Bow, Blue Crew. I won. It was a nice BVD. Only two more days of Camp. I can’t wait to see my dogs. Next year I hope to get my Green, Golden Anchor, my Axe Test, and Rowboat Safety. -SPENCER DRAZEK

55 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS I am very close to my Green ribbon and I’ll work on my Red ribbon next year. Graduating will be easy. Next year all I have left after my Green will be all the Den things and Canoe and Rowboat Safety, plus the Axe Test. Only if Mr. Garcia will be satisfied with my mediocre butterfly stroke, will that last statement be true. -JACK DROS

THE LAST DAYS OF CAMP Today is one of the last days of Camp. This week has been a lot of fun, from going to Scoops to feeling the accomplishment of climbing Mt. Cardigan. I enjoyed this year a lot and am looking forward to another great year. P.S. I really like Sailing, Archery, Camping, and Rowboating. I also had fun playing Tetherball and Gaga. -MIQY KHAPRA

THE BEST PARTS Wow, I can’t believe this year is already over. It just goes by so fast. There is so much stuff I can write about that I’m just going to write about the best parts of this year. Surprisingly, this year went exactly how I planned it in terms of accomplish- ments. In the first four weeks of Camp I got my Swimmers and Sharpshooter. Today I got my Green and Gold ribbons, as well as my Canoe Safety. I was also planning on being on First Form this year. Next year is going to be my best summer here by far. I’m going into Den with only one Den Requirement left. Next year I’m going to get my Red ribbon, which will make up my Inner Circle, as well as my Orange and Maroon. It’s going to be awesome. -ETHAN HEIT

56 FIRST SUMMER ACCOMPLISHMENTS This was my first summer at Mowglis, and was awesome!! I got two ribbons; Tennis and Crafts. I also got my Swimmer’s and my Pro Marksman. I think it was a good summer. Also, I made Third Form, but we lost. And I am close to making the finals of the Tennis Tourna- ment. The two 3-day trips were very good. I am going to come here next year. -DIEGO SAENZ

THIS MOWGLIS YEAR This Mowglis year was the best. My first year was awesome. Sadly, I might not come back next year. I’m going to miss all of the staff, especially Mr. de Velasco, Miss Eva, and Miss Sofia. I’m going to miss the Camp. -PETER NATALE

THE MOST FUN SO FAR My favorite part about this summer was Crew Week. I was on Racing Crew, and even though we lost, it was great spending the week with my friends and Mr Stewart. This was the most fun I have had at Mowglis so far. -CAELAN AKRE

IT’S ALL GREAT Mowglis is great, the campers are great, the staff are great, the food is great, the activities are great, the lake is great. All is great at this Camp! This year I got my Yellow ribbon, I won the Archery Tournament, I am also working on my 2nd bar. I didn’t make any boat (I’m so bad at Coxing), but I don’t mind, I will make a boat next year. A GREAT FIRST YEAR I have enjoyed my first year here at Camp. Even though I haven’t completed all of my Den requirements yet, or gotten into Inner Circle, I at least still got my Black and Silver Fencing Ribbon. Mowglis, during the seven weeks at Camp, has been like a second home to me. I made friends that were like family members inside the Pack, but some friends come and go before the summer ends. I hope I can come back again. -EVAN LAI

MR. STEWART The summer is over and now I face a new page in my life. I am now a Graduate and I leave behind my life as a camper. Through the good times and the bad times Camp was still a special place. Some of the best times were with Mr. Stewart. He loved us dearly and he didn’t just make my experience at camp an enjoyable one, he made it an experience that I can’t explain. Mr Stewart made an impact on me and will be a person I will respect and love until the day I die. Mr. Stewart, I salute you. -SAM HECKER

THE BEST SUMMER OF MY LIFE This has been, by far, the best summer of my life. I’m in love with every single thing in this place. The smell, the color of the trees when I look up and there’s sun filtering into the leaves, the Camp songs, Ms. Amanda’s and Hiro’s laugh, the waterfront, the kids (especially my boys from Akela), Mr. Bravo’s jokes, the campfires, chill- ing time in the Craft Shop, Ms. Burgess’s announce- ments, Mr. Gulitti’s “Aaaaaall out!,” reading books at night to Peter and Nate, listening to Spanish songs and singing to the top of my lungs with the Diegos, Juan, and Guille, doing cool handshakes with Nate, Thomas, Kyle, Spencer, Will, and many more kids...Camp isn’t over yet and I already miss it so much. I’m so sad, but I’m filled with love and happiness, and I will never be able to thank my cousin Mr. de Velasco enough for bringing me here. Camp Mowglis, te amo. -MISS EVA

58 59 Cub History 2019

At dear old Mowglis the bunks in Ford Hall began to fill up as Cubs arrived. Cubs began to quickly unpack and play with their new friends. Cubs came from Russia, China, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, Massachusetts, and other states around the United States. I was welcomed to Cubland by Dru and Zellan and headed to the GaGa pit. We start our days by getting out of bed, brushing teeth, and folding sheets and blankets. As soon as Soupy blows, we all run to the rock to line up for breakfast! We then race to the Dining Hall to see who can dunk their hands first. After breakfast, we return to Cubland to do our Duties. This summer we added a new Duty, “Rowdy Duty,” to feed Cubland’s cat! My favorite Duty was getting the Cub campfire ready for the night. Industries are the best part of the Mowglis Day! Cubs participated in Crafts, Swimming, Camping, Riflery, Archery, Fencing, Tennis, Canoeing, Rowboating, and Nature. Of all these great Industries, I enjoyed Crafts the most because there are a variety of things to do each day like making soap, woodworking, or creating Crew masks. The Cubs worked hard to earn requirements in their Industries and even earned some Cub Ribbons! This summer, Ms. Amanda, created the Cub Ribbon! This had one requirement from each of our Industries, plus some extras like leading a hike, complete a Canoeing trip, assisting in building a Campfire, and leading a Cub Campfire. I am the first Cub to receive my Cub Ribbon! Thursdays are one of my favorite days at Camp because we get to go on trips. We climbed waterfalls, picked blueberries, went on countless hikes, and visited the Squam Lake Science Center. Last Trip Day, we successfully completed the Cardigan assault with the whole Pack! At the top of the mountain, we all met up and had the most amazing view! Cub Campfires bring us all together before going to bed. Sometimes we join the Pack, but we usually have our own in Cubland. This summer some Cubs led the Campfire. I presented with my friends Kayshav and Dru on what Industries and activities we offer here at Camp to our new 3-week Cubs. My two favorite Campfires are when we made banana boats and when we read The Cookie Tree, and the magician brought us one the next day! Crew Week began with lots of excitement. Bandanas were distributed, cheers practiced, and Crew masks were made. We spent the week with our Crews playing games, learning chants, and getting ready for Race Day. Crew Day started and the excitement began! Cubs had their race with the Blue Cubs taking the lead, and then Racing Crew started rowing! There was a ton of cheering with Red Crew off to a great start, but Blue Crew caught up and took the lead, making it a BVD. Next year I am hoping for an RVD! I started out thinking I was only going to stay at Mowglis for the first three weeks of summer, but I had such a great time that I was able to stay all summer! At first, I was scared to try things like Riflery, but with the help of Mr. Mac and encouragement of the other Cubs, I was able to receive my ProMarksman! Camp gave me the opportunity to try new things and meet new friends from all over! I want to thank Ms. Amanda, Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Ibarra, Mr. Paige, Mr. Carothers, Ms. Eva, and Ms. Sophia for an unforgettable summer! Cubs 2019, we salute you! -JOHNNY DEMOPOULOS, CUB

On Arrival Day I was nervous, but excited. I didn’t know anybody, but after an hour I got into the Spirit of Mowglis -GEORGE SAROSI

This week was Arrival Week. There was a lot of getting used to because this is my first year. I made five friends who are now my best friends. I am still a little homesick at night, but during the day I have so much fun that I’m not really homesick. On Thursday we had our first trip. It was good except that we were two minutes in and behind me Daniel was going on and on about how he was dying. We got to the falls and we ate our lunch and then we played at the falls on the way back. I slept most of the trip back to camp. -JOHNNY DEMOPOULOS

I went kayaking with two other kids and at the end of kayaking I made three more friends! Kayaking was really fun! -YURY MASLOV

61 The thing I like to do is to have Soak. I skip rocks and play on the water mats, and play with lifeguards. -RONALD HO

I enjoy it down in Riflery. I enjoyed using rifles. I shot an 8 for my first target. The bullets must have bounced off of the target. -PETR MASLOV

The first week was AWESOME! I was using a rifle, I cleaned a rifle, I shot a rifle 15 times. It was fun. -BRIAN SHARKEY

I made a friend named Johnny. He always lets me borrow his pencil when I need it. Today we played baseball for Clubs. I played outfield and Johnny played third base. -ZELLAN TULLY

I am writing about my friend Petr. We met on the first day of Camp. We both like baseball. We have so much fun together. I hope we both stay for seven weeks because I’m having so much fun. -DANIEL DEVINE

Today I went to Riflery Club. My scores were 3, 9, and 17. Today I also learned how to take out the bolt from the rifle and how to clean a rifle. -KAYSHAV MITTAL

I had a fun time taste testing tea during Clubs for our nature walk. I also got to eat wild strawberries, they were really good. I also got to eat lemon clovers, and the tea tasted really good. -GABE GARCIA

62 This was my first time at Mowglis. I tried Riflery for the first time. I enjoyed it very much and was surprised at how good I became at it in just 3 weeks. ROHAN BHAGAT

Today we had Clubs. Mr. Sullivan was doing bouldering. I chose bouldering and we did a traverse around the room. Mr. Sullivan also gave us comments like “Left hand green” and some were really hard to do - it was basically Twister on a rock wall. Before we were free climbing and I hooked my hands on two rocks and hung. Also yesterday there was a thunderstorm during Landsports Day and we had to stop. But everything else was good. I love the slip n’ slide. I’m excited for soak, it is so hot. -JOHNNY DEMOPOULOS

One of my highlights of the week is Clubs. I went with Mr. Chen. We put together a 4th of July slide and now Mr. Chen is going to put it on the Mowglis web. When we were done we went onto the Ping Pong Porch and took pictures. I enjoyed my time with Mr. Chen. -GABE GARCIA

This week we went tubing with Mr. Hart and the Cubs. It was really fast but I didn’t fall off. I thought about letting go so I could feel the rush of the water. I can’t wait to go again! -ZELLAN TULLY

On the first day I was so worried and then I liked it. When I was shooting, I always was shooting in the right place but it bounced. My best score was a 23. -PETR MASLOV

63 I did a 39 at Riflery! I think that’s the best score ever in Cubs! And I think it’s very close to the other boys. Next time I hope to get a 49! -YURY MASLOV

I am having a great summer! And my favorite part of the summer is meeting Kayshav and Johnny. And I am REALLY happy Kayshav is my bunkmate. And my favorite Industry is water tubing. And I really liked when we went to that pizza place. -DRU ROBBINS

Camp has been super fun. We went on a little trip and picked blueberries. Then we made blueberry pizza. I’m looking forward to the Crew Race. I hope I’m Red Crew. -ADRIAN MORGAN

A great friend I made is Dru Robbins. We both like playing and doing Crafts. It was great meeting Dru Robbins on the first day of Camp. I hope the rest of the summer is as fun as the first four weeks and one day. I can’t wait to do some fun stuff with my friends tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow’s breakfast is pancakes and bacon. I hope it is a really fun two weeks and 1 day and that’s when I will see my family. I can’t forget the day I met Dru Robbins. -DANIEL DEVINE

On Tuesday we got to go out for pizza because there were only eight of us. After, we got to go to Walmart and buy ice cream and then we went to a gas station to eat it. I’ve gotten really good at Archery. I only need five more requirements to get my Cub Archery ribbon. I already have my Drama and Hiking ribbons. I hope I get my Cub Archery ribbon. -JOHNNY DEMOPOULOS 64 We made a fort. It is cool because it is an Army fort and I'm a Green Beret. We had big guns that are sticks. -JAKE MANNO

Today my Club was wiffle ball. It was so fun! The club was baseball, but with a softball. We lost 1-2, but it was fun. -ALEX HAYDEN

So far me and some of the Cubs have built a fort. Riflery is pretty fun, I hit a few times and I got 15 points. I’m trying to get my Pro Marksman. -CONNOR THOEL

I have made so many friends at Camp, like Adrian. We both like playing Gaga ball and we both read. -DANIEL DEVINE

I’ve had a good time here. I love the RiIfle Range. We shoot the rifles and then we go into the fire range and get our targets. We write if we qualified, then we do it all over again. -ALEX LENSSEN

On Tuesday, the Cubs and I wen to the Bristol House of Pizza together instead of eating a camp dinner. I got to eat cheese pizza, bread, and mozzarella sticks. I even got to have root beer. We were celebrating all the cubs who made it into the 4th week. I am excited to do this again with the new Cubs. -ZELLAN TULLY

On Thursday (Trip Day) we went to a blueberry farm called Green Acres. It was fun. We picked, collected and ate. We stuffed ourselves so much that we could barely eat lunch. I enjoyed my visit to Green Acres. -LUCIAN THOMASES

The days are flying by because I’m having so much fun. The weeks seem so slow - weird, right? Fast days, slow weeks. So weird. Some fun stuff is Axemanship, Sunday Picnic Supper, and Soak. All I’m saying is that camp is fun, slow, but at the same time fast. -MATT RUSS

My favorite thing at Camp so far is swimming. This is because I am able to cool down from the hot days during soak. -RYLAND CASE

I had lots of fun at Clubs today with Mr. Stewart playing wiffle ball. I struggled to hit the ball, however I had tons of fun! -ZELLAN TULLY

I made a lot of friends here at camp, my best friends are Kayshav and Johnny. It’s really nice that Kayshav is also my bunk mate. There is a really cute cat in Cubland named Rowdy. We made a toy for him in Crafts and he really likes to play with it. I really hope he has a great summer too! -DRU ROBBINS

We went blueberry picking, and we went on my first backpacking trip. Gaga ball is really fun! My favorite Industry is Riflery. My highest target is 27. I am really excited for Crew Week! The summer is going really fast. -PRESTON MORGAN

66 Yearling History 2019

Yearlings Report—As presented on Visiting Weekend By: The Yearlings

Shoh: Yearlings 2019 was a blast from start to finish. In three short weeks we went to Acadia National Park in Maine, did a base camp trip to Franconia, and explored the Great Gulf Wilderness and the Presidentials. Our group of eight came from across the country and around the world. With so many different characters, there was never a dull or quiet moment. Daniel: The first day was rock climbing in Acadia National Park. We tried a few different climbs in the morning, then rappelled at the Otter Cliffs in the afternoon. Everyone had a few moments of hesitation, but by the end of the day we were all confident and having a good time. The night brought torrential rains, and Shoh and Daniel discovered much to their dismay that their tent was leaky. We had a relaxing second day capped off with a nice easy trek. On the third day, we departed early for sea kayaking. Paddling in two-person kayaks, we saw seals, birds, and other extraordinary wildlife. Another afternoon, another easy trek. Throughout the trip, Mr. Love cooked for us tasty and healthy food (no mac-n-cheese!). The last morning at Acadia National Park was spent mountain biking. Rainer, Mateo, Teddy, Mr. Sullivan, and I had our own “Tour de Acadia,” while Luke, Shoh, Rui and Mr. Love opted for a non-competitive ride. The day was capped off with a hike up Beehive on the coast of Maine. The view at the peak was amazing. Max: On Monday of the second week, we headed out to Franconia Falls. We went on a natural waterslide, and jumped off different spots into the cool clear water. The next day, we awoke early to head for Mt. Washington. We arrived at the summit after a five hour climb, and celebrated by stuffing ourselves with junk food—especially Max and Mateo, who later suffered the consequences. After descending, we head out for some cliff-jumping. After a long tiring day of hiking and cliff-jumping we returned to our campsite for a much-needed dinner and sleep.

67 Mateo: We awoke early on Wednesday for a day of rock climbing with Mr. Sulivan and Mr. Lottman. We started by rappelling 200-foot cliffs. Following that, Mr. Lottman and Mr. Sulivan set up three more ropes for us to try at a different location. After rock-climbing, we had another try at cliff-jumping. The next day was spent climbing Mt. Lafayette. Rainer: On our last week, we embarked on a pack trip no Mowglis had attempted before. We started at the Great Gulf Wilderness trailhead, and proceeded to hike about 4 miles to a wilderness campsite. That night, we amused ourselves by playing hide-and-seek and cards before drifting off to sleep. The next day, we started on the Wamsutta Trail toward Mt. Washington, cutting across the Alpine Garden to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, admiring Tuckerman’s Ravine along the way. After a brief stop at Lakes, we started on the Dry River Trail. We ventured through overgrown flora and over uprooted trees, all the while seeing only two other people. This is what back-packing is all about! We scrambled down the trail, and settled into the Dry River Shelter. Later, a couple arrived, whom we instantly befriended. The next morning, we woke to our final hike together as Yearlings. We continued on the Dry River Trail towards the Mizpah Hut, where we reunited with the couple from the previous evening. They were happy to see us and made us all join them for a group picture. Then we hiked an uneventful three miles back down to the trailhead. This year’s Yearling trips were packed full of twists and turns, but by the end of our adventure, we had all grown as people, gelled as a team, and learned many things that we will take with us into our lives beyond.
