1 Ministry of Culture and the Arts Progress 2014 Compiled by the Planning Division to provide details on the progress of the planed programmes according to the “Mahinda Chinthana Ediri Dekma” conducted by the Ministry in 2014 and to introduce plans for 2015 Published by Ministry of Culture and the Arts 8th Floor Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla 2 Message of Hon. Minister !!! Meaningful Progress in Culture ! The cultural value system of Sri Lanka or any other country has two aspects called tangible heritage and intangible heritage. However, culture and art are immeasurable gifts bestowed by our forefathers. Their preciousness depends on the activities of not only the human beings but all the living beings in the globe. It gives me great pleasure to note herein a positive progress made in implementing administrative functions related to culture and the arts which have inextricable relations with the human life. This progress is an eloquent testimony to the fulfilment of objectives set by the ministry and other institutions functioning under its purview. It further confirms the betterment of ordinary public during the period where Sri Lanka forges ahead to be the “Wonder of Asia”. Our attempt to mark the progress of our functions in an environment conducive to the spiritual development without sticking to the advancement of science and technology has succeeded. The speciality in the achievement is the integration between our programmes and national heritage which directed the thinking of ordinary public towards arts and beauty of life. Without being captivated by modern scientific and technological implements, we could successfully register a remarkable advancement in affairs related to arts in a background that is conducive to spiritual development.

  • STAGING SRI LANKAN DANCERS UNDER BRITISH COLONIAL RULE from the 1870S – 1930S
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: COLONIAL CHOREOGRAPHY: STAGING SRI LANKAN DANCERS UNDER BRITISH COLONIAL RULE FROM THE 1870s – 1930s Sudesh Bandara Mantillake Madamperum Arachchilage, Doctor of Philosophy, 2018. Dissertation directed by: Dr. Esther Kim Lee, School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. In textbooks the terms “Kandyan dance” and its equivalent in the Sinhala language “udarata nätuma” are used to describe the dance tradition that was predominantly practiced in the Kandyan region of Sri Lanka. Nationalist histories portray Kandyan dance as a continuation of a pristine tradition that was passed down from ancient Sinhala kingdoms. As the Sinhala nationalist discourse glorified Kandyan dance vis à vis its Tamil counterpart, it obscured the British colonial encounter with Kandyan dancers by leaving out a part of the rich history of dance. As I demonstrate in this dissertation, colonialism transformed to a significant extent the Kandyan dancescape of the British colonial period, particularly between the 1870s and 1930s. Therefore, this dissertation re-examines the history of the so-called tradition of Kandyan dance with the focus on the British colonial encounter with performers of the Kandyan region. As a Sri Lankan dancer, I try to trace and interpret the histories of dancers that were ignored or shrouded in silence in colonial and Sinhala national histories. As a historian, I interpret archival materials through textual and visual analysis while as a dancer, I interpret archival materials through my embodied knowledge

  • Chapter 10 Present Condition of the Heritage Area
THE PROJECT FOR FORMULATION OF GREATER KANDY URBAN PLAN Final Report: Vol.2 Main Text CHAPTER 10 PRESENT CONDITION OF THE HERITAGE AREA 10.1 Heritage Conservation 10.1.1 Historic Buildings in the Heritage Area (1) Overview of Historic Resources in the Heritage Area During the British colonisation, most of the buildings from the Kandyan Period were demolished and replaced, except for the Temple of the Tooth Relic; Malwatta and Asgiriya Temple; the four temples Natha Devale, Vishunu Devale, Kataragama Devale, and Patthini Devale; and some buildings once part of the palace complex, such as Palle Wasala and Meda Wasala. The grid street pattern of the Commercial Grid was developed during the Kandyan Period and it should be also considered as an important historic resource as not so many buildings survived from the Kandyan Kingdom. Most of the historic buildings were built during the British colonisation. Due to high development pressure particularly after the 21st century, buildings which date back to the Colonial Period were also demolished to make way for modern buildings. (2) Analysis of the List of Conserved Buildings gazetted by UDA 1) Overview There are 488 buildings in the UDA’s list of conserved buildings1 while the separate list “Special Buildings within the City of Kandy” contains 23 buildings. They are both gazetted by UDA in 2001. The major difference between the former and latter list is in building ownership2. UDA’s list mostly contains privately owned buildings, while the list of special buildings includes those owned by public institutions such as Bogambara Prison, Remand Prison, police barrack, old Post Office, and Police Station Buildings, which are highlighted in red in the map below (see Figure 10.1.1).

  • Kandy Esala Perahera 2018 History of Kandy Perahera
Kandy Esala Perahera 2018 History of Kandy Perahera The Esala is believed to be a fusion of two separate but interconnected "Peraheras" (Processions) - The Esala and Dalada. The Esala Perahera, which is thought to date back to the 3rd century BC, was a ritual enacted to request the gods for rainfall. The Dalada Perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century CE, eight hundred years after the passing away of Lord Buddha. According to tradition, the Tooth Relic was taken in procession to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala & Prince Dantha. 1 Kumbal Perahera On the sixth night, the Kumbal Perahera begins and continues for five days. Initially, the Devale Perahera assembles in front of the Temple of the Tooth. The emblems placed on the ransivige (a dome-like structure) are accompanied by the Basnayake Nilames (the lay custodians of the Devales). Elephants, drummers and dancers will be seen in all these Peraheras. For the next five nights, the “Devale Peraheras” take place within the premises of the four Devales with the priest of each Devale taking the pole every evening, accompanied by music and drumming, flag and canopy bearers, spearman and the Ran Ayudha, the sacred insignia of the Gods. The following important times are announced by the firing of cannonballs, which can be heard all across Kandy. 1. The commencement of the Devale Perahera 2. The placing of the casket on the tuskers back 3. The commencement of the Dalada Maligawa Perahera 4.
