and even beliefs. No “chasm” is “unbridgeable,” and the only thing that is “absolute” is our bond to one another, which no holier-than-thou ideology can break. A story regarding the well- known Orthodox rabbi demonstrates the approach which Jews should have towards one another. Levin was walking in his hometown, Jerusalem, when he noticed a familiar young soldier who was home on break from his military service. “Hello,” said Levin, who was already an older man. “Please come to my home and share some tea with me. I would like to hear about what you are doing.” The young soldier seemed uncomfortable and replied, “I don’t think it’s right for me to come visit you. I don’t even wear a anymore.” Rabbi Levin, wearing his black hat and long black coat, took the soldier’s hand into his own and with a smile on his face, he said: “Don’t you see? I’m very short. I cannot look above your head to see whether you are wearing a kippah or not. However, I can see your heart and it is big and kind, and that’s what counts.” Levin then paused and added, “You are also a soldier placing your life at risk for all of us in Israel. Please drink tea with me—your ‘kippah’ is probably bigger than mine.” A Jew is a Jew. Our num- bers are very small. We need each other’s support, respect and love. Rejecting opportuni- ties to join together—especially when the opportunity involves sharing words of Torah—is destructive and potentially cat- astrophic. The Babylonian Talmud relates that when G-d came to destroy the Temple, the angels asked Him to put a mark on the heads of the righteous peo- ple so they could be saved. G-d replied that these “righteous people” would be the fi rst to be punished, because it was their responsibility to reach out to those who were unlike them and inspire. G-d did not see a “chasm.” G-d saw nothing as “unbridgeable.” G-d did not assess whether they were “in a frame of mind to change their lives.” I will be at the Limmud Con- ference, and I believe that G-d’s Presence will rest upon a gath- ering of Jews from all back- grounds, who will join together to discuss, debate and connect. 16 December 13, 2013 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES December 13, 2013 17 Young Jewish Girls ‘Marrying Arabs In ’ A growing number of young Jew- ish girls are marrying Arabs, according to Dr. Boris Yudis, deputy mayor of the northern town of Afula. Yudis was inter- viewed for a report on intermarriage in the regional newspaper Index Haemek Vehagalil. “The phenomenon of girls, aged 12 and 13, who are in Arab villages breaks my heart, but unfortunately my hands are tied,” he was quoted as saying. “Mothers come to me and cry that their 12- and 13-year-olds have moved into minority villages, this is a painful thing that wounds my heart.” He was further quoted as saying: “I am really frustrated and this is not about Jews and Arabs—it is about the fact that instead of learning and study- ing they waste their lives. It is a sad phe- nomenon that we are unable to treat in a thorough way, from the root. I no lon- ger believe only in law enforcement; I think we will have results if we act through education.”

“Instead of learning and studying they waste their lives.”

Israel’s pro-Jewish Identity NGO Yad L’Achim confi rmed the claim. Its chair- man was quoted as saying that they receive requests to assist in similar cases nationwide. The girls involved are aged 11 years and upward, he said. The Family Lobby responded to the report by saying that “the painful phe- nomenon of Jewish girls who cross over into Arab society is the direct result of the weakening of the family unit and the deterioration of the status of fathers in the Jewish family in recent decades— due to the activity of militant feminist women’s groups.” Family Lobby chairman Gil Ronen explained: “The infl ated propaganda about battered women in the Jew- ish sector and the encouragement of divorce through unwarranted perks for single parent households wind up hurt- ing these girls, who end up in the Arab sector, where their chances of being battered are far higher.” ()  Remember that article? It ted to go into those villages or homes and rescue these girls, even if they are aware that they are being held against their will. How is it that these types of situations exist? One would think that it would be a slam dunk to get legislation passed that allows police to enter these villages and help save these girls. But not so fast. MK Zeev, who introduced the bill, explains why not. “There is a large and infl uen- tial sector of the Knesset that believes that freedoms need to be protected, regardless of the harm caused or damage done,” he explains. And one effect of this is that if 16-year-old or even younger Israeli girls get entangled in a bad and poten- tially dangerous situation, as of today, the law in Israel is not on their side. He adds that the mood in the Israel legislature today is such that almost all social issues are viewed from a liberal European perspective. Where that impacts on this sit- uation is that if a law of this nature were to pass, then, for example, young women who wanted to stay with their Arab boyfriends, but whose parents wanted them “rescued,” might be pulled out against their will. I asked MK Zeev, whose Shas party sits in the opposi- tion today, why this is such a vital issue to him. He says that it has little to do with politics, but rather is a situ- ation that is plaguing young women and their families in an increasing fashion. Shas is a party with primarily Sephar- dic community support, with an inordinate number of fami- lies having two things in com- mon—the families are large and are struggling economi- cally. (Though MK Zeev points out that the young women in this situation, whom the pro- posed legislation would affect, are from a broad cross-section of the Israel population.)

They throw all of their efforts into that child. If the child has average or above average capabili- ties, he will have experienced tremen- dous amounts of learning opportu- nities from both father and mother. Psychological studies have proven this to be true. Kate Lorenz, an editor at Career- Builder.com, writes the following: “In his book The Pecking Order: Which Siblings Succeed and Why, Dalton Con- ley demonstrates that 75% of the income inequality between individuals in the United States occurs between siblings in the same families . . . Research shows that fi rstborns [and only children] lead the pack in terms of educational attain- ment, occupational prestige, income, and net worth. Conversely, middle chil- dren in large families tend to fare the worst. “‘A child’s position in the family impacts his personality, his behavior, his learning, and ultimately his earning power,’ states Michael Grose, author of Why First-Borns Rule the World and Last-Borns Want to Change It. ‘Most peo- ple have an intuitive knowledge that birth order somehow has an impact on development, but they underestimate how far-reaching and just how signifi - cant that impact really is.’” So say the researchers in the fi eld. Yet, if we take a look at the events in Sefer Bereishis, we immediately see that this expectation does not pan out. Let’s cite a few examples: Adam had three sons—Kayin, Hevel, and Sheis. The successful son was Sheis. Noach had three sons—Shem, Cham, and Yefes. Although Shem is mentioned fi rst, Yefes was actually the oldest, while Cham was the youngest and Shem was the middle child. However, Shem was the ancestor of Klal Yisrael and the pre- eminent son. Terach had three sons—the old- est being Haran, the second, Avraham, and the third, Nachor. The success of the middle child in this family speaks for itself. Avraham had two children— the older Yishmael, and the younger Yitzchak. Who was preeminent and who was ejected? But that is not a bad thing, and should not deter you from this shidduch. Maturity, and not necessarily desperation, can be what makes someone open her eyes to other possibilities. It seems you are more bothered about your own short stature than the girl is. If this girl you are dating is as desperate as you imagine her to be, there are other seri- ous areas in a guy’s qualities she could have chosen to overlook, even before you came into the picture. Instead, she chose to overlook the difference in height by dat- ing you, and furthermore in wanting to marry you. It is she who is pushing for the relationship to ascend to the next level. If you are sincerely not attracted to her because she is not the petite girl you’d go for, then clearly you need to do yourself and her the favor of ending this relation- ship immediately—without any delay. However, if you are nervous about getting engaged simply because you are not sure if she is marrying you for the qualities you possess outside your height, then simply ask her what she sees in you. Schedule a date and, while speaking to her alone, compliment her on the quali- ties she demonstrates. Talk about her mid- dos and what you admire most about her. She might reciprocate in verbalizing that which she fi nds admirable about you. If not, there is nothing wrong in asking her what she appreciates about you. From her response, you will get a feel for what she really likes about you. You need to hear it so that you will get over the notion that she wants to marry you out of desperation. If you ultimately decide to go ahead with this shidduch and get engaged, take pride in the fact that, unlike some of the so-called perfect-looking couples, you were blessed to attain true appreciation of each other. When people say they had a rough week, they are usually referring to some- thing serious, such as a health issue or a major fi nancial problem. But not all rough times fall into those categories. Some of us claim to have had a rough week sim- ply because of a snafu in our daily living. Shamefully, every now and then I slip into the latter group. I’m not above kvetching when things don’t go my way. And that’s just what I did. Thank G-d, there were no monumental crises! Nevertheless, in my mind, I had a rough week. I spent most of Monday morning on the phone with tech support to get help for problems with my cable television. And the very next day, I needed help for a com- puter problem. I am unable to solve any technical problems on my own and, even with help, they pose a challenge to me. But every now and then I make some headway. After three years of not even knowing that I had DVR service, I learned that I did and I managed to learn how to use it. I am proud to say that I am now able to record any program that interests me and then play it back at my leisure. That might not sound like a big deal but, for someone such as myself, it is more than just a big deal: it is a huge accom- plishment. I even learned how to change the date on the channel guide so that I can record a future program. The average eight-year-old can do the same thing, but that’s neither here nor there. Every now and then something goes wrong with my DVR service—something that is not due to any error of mine—and when it does, I simply call my cable ser- vice and ask for help. Invariably, the prob- lem is an internal one—the problem is in their system and not due to any misstep on my part. So some unsuspecting soul gets on the phone to help me and I do what he tells me to do. Eventually he gets the problem solved. I play no part in the solution. I’m proud just to have been able to follow his instructions. On this occa- sion, it took a long time to clear things up because every time we hung up, the same problem recurred and I had to call back. After three separate phone calls, it was fi nally straightened out. All was right with my world. Until the next day! The very next morning, my computer decided to give me some much-unneeded grief. No rest for the weary! Once again I called for help and I was told that the dif- fi culty was with my browser, or maybe he called it my search engine. I don’t know what it’s called and I don’t care. I know only that it’s what I use to send and receive e-mail! And I was unable to do either. As soon as my helper’s voice came over the wire, I knew I was not speak- ing to anyone in the continental United States. Unlike my television cable ser- vice provider, the people who provide me with Internet service are big on out- sourcing! That, in and of itself, is a hurdle since I don’t do well with accents. I never have. Based on the accent, I guessed that the man was speaking to me from some-

Rather, that the battle for princi- ples be fought in peaceful ways, as did previous Gedolim in great controver- sies throughout the ages, all for “Truth, Peace, and Love of Israel.” The battles between Beis Hillel and Beis Shamai were fi erce, but they were fought for truth in Torah interpretation and hala- chic decisions, not for victory alone. As ferocious as the disputes were, they fully respected each other, sat at the same tables, shared meals, and inter- married without hesitation. Rabbi Salomon’s speech was instantly translated in Hebrew, English, etc., and widely distributed, especially in Israel. Hapeles, the Bnei Torah newspaper in Israel, covered Rabbi Salomon’s speech in its Friday issue and gave it major coverage. Degel HaTorah insists that its battle is a holy war and must not be impeded or stopped. The cry of the Lakewood Mashgiach follows those of other Gedolim who have shouted that the focus must be on the threats to Torah life that are destroying the Torah community, not on inter-organizational arguments to gain honor, money, or prestige. Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, Sat- mar Rebbe and avowed anti-Zionist, denounced this political controversy and Haredi community infi ghting as deplorable. The Satmar Rebbe, in his keynote address to tens of thousands of chassidim at the annual 21st Kis- lev Celebration in the Crown Heights Armory, decried the petty bickering and wrangling while the Lapid government in Israel seeks to entirely destroy the Haredi Torah community infrastruc-

So instead, you’d write so that all the letters were joined together, and it was still impos- sible to read, but at least you expected it. Sure, many respected historic doc- uments were written in script. The Constitution, for example. And it’s because of this that our government offi cials spend day and night argu- ing about what it actually says. No one can read it. Half the time, even the writer himself can’t read it. He fi nishes writing the word, and then when he’s done, he has to go back and cross all his t’s and dot all his i’s. But usually, he ends up crossing h’s and dotting n’s. “Seriously? You couldn’t read your own handwriting half a second later when you went back to cross your t’s, and now I’m supposed to decipher what you wrote with a crossed ‘l’? Where on earth is Constantinopte?” I have no idea what they were think- ing when they designed the letters: “The n has to have two bumps.” “But then it’s an m!” “Okay, we’ll give the m three bumps.” “Um . . . How are you going to be able to read what your Bubby writes in her birthday cards that she already paid $3 for? And if she was going to write her own note, why did she pay $3 for a prewritten card? But anyway, it takes only one day to learn how to read script, and a year and a half to practice writing it enough so that it doesn’t look like you only formed words by accident. The traditionalists also want to know how kids are going to be able to read offi cial documents, like the Dec- laration of Independence. I don’t know. There are plenty of print versions available. The only time you ever see the original copy is under lock and key on your eighth-grade graduation trip, unless, as with my eighth grade trip, your trip is focused less on historic documents and more on rafting the Delaware. And to be honest, I’ve tried reading the print ver- sion and haven’t made it through that either. They’re not missing anything. A lot of detractors also say that writ- ing in script is faster. How is it faster? Because you don’t have to pick up the pen between letters? It’s not like you have to pick it up 3 tefachim. It’s not machatzis ha’shekel. Also, try doing a crossword puzzle in script. It’s not going to be illegal to learn script. Some schools are still going to teach it. And you can learn it on your own time, like piano. Or balloon let- ters. Every kid at some point teaches himself how to make balloon letters. Were the parents livid back when they stopped teaching that in school? I’m asking seriously. I don’t know my his- tory. I was busy learning script when I was in school. What do you think? Write in. But not in script, for goodness’ sake. I don’t want to have to read it. 

Over 50 students participated in Rambam Mesivta’s one of a kind 4-Corner-Dodge- ball Tournament of Champions. They raised almost $1,000 to benefi t the Kids With Courage Foundation, dedicated to helping children living with Type 1 Dia- betes. In 4-Corner Dodgeball, invented by Al Hecht, a’h, the Blue, Green/Yellow, White, and Red teams are sectioned off in different corners of the gym and are each given one ball to start a round. They are then allowed to throw at any of the other three teams. Each team gets points for the number of players remaining after each 90-second round. As the fi nal round approached, every team still had a chance to win. The tro- phies and medals were brought out to set the stage for a grueling 90 seconds that would determine the 2013/5774 champions of 4-Corner-Dodgeball! As the fi nal whistle sounded, it was clear by the deft calculations that . . . every team had an unbelievable time! In the end, the White team emerged victori- ous and Yosef Chaim Septimus, a junior, was named the Al Hecht Memorial MVP. A player from each team earned an all-star award for outstanding play and everyone from the White team won a medal. The student organizers of this event, Yaakov Nussbaum, Yarden Sokol, and Avi Martin, were then thanked, as were scorekeeper Tzvi Strauss and refs Akiva Hochbaum, Yoni Nirenberg, Yitz Milworn, Benny Besalel, and Mr. Gold- man. Rambam Mesivta is proud to fi nd unique ways to raise awareness and funds for noble institutions. In addition to its fundraisers involving fl ag-foot- ball tournaments, home-run derbies, and basketball tournaments, Rambam has also raised signifi cant donations through running cholent cook-offs, a “Gotcha” tournament, and a knee- hockey tournament. “One of the great things about Ram- bam Mesivta is that the guys are com- fortable here to be who they are and engage in their passions,” said assis- tant principal, Hillel Goldman, the fac- ulty organizer of the 4-Corner-Dodge- ball Tournament. “At Rambam, there is something for everyone, as our student activities motto is: ‘A team for every tal- ent. This is the precise issue that MK Dov Lipman has taken head on and dealt with directly from the get-go. His crit- ics will say that he is at the helm of the effort to reduce aid to yeshivas in Israel. He will tell you that yes, aid is being reduced to yeshivas which ada- mantly refuse to introduce a curricu- lum that includes English and math. “They will also not tell you what is being done with that money,” Rabbi Lipman says. “The money is being exclusively earmarked for job training in the Chareidi sector.” What can I say? It was a fascinating exercise to come out of two Knesset meetings and not hear a word about U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who was meeting with the Prime Minister less than a mile away. Or, for that mat- ter, to hear that the Knesset commit- tees were busy discussing the Iranian nuclear threat or some similar type of situation. Instead, the issues of the day dealt with everyday societal challenges. It was a wonderful display of the inter- nal Israel struggling with important issues vital to her future without the need, for a change, of worrying about what someone out there might think. The great thing about the Knesset is the structure of the democratic balance of power and how things can change dramatically in just a moment. Today the Chareidi parties, like Shas and United Torah Judaism, are aligned with the opposition, which includes leftists in the Labor party willing to trade half of Jerusalem and Israel’s vital security for Arab promises that would be impos- sible for the other side to fulfi ll. (I’d like to revise that and say that they say they are willing to make painful conces- sions in exchange for an elusive peace, but that’s just political rhetoric laced with falsehoods.) It was nice to see the real Israel at work for a change, dealing with mat- ters like saving the lives of young Jew- ish girls and the struggle to give the heads of households the ability and opportunity to support their own fam- ilies. There is probably nothing more important. 

The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle move- ment is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.” Ben, Deborah’s husband of almost 19 years, marvels, “I am constantly amazed by how well Deborah is deal- ing with her ALS diagnosis and symp- toms. I’m totally a mess and she is constantly looking on the bright side of life.” His honest sentiment echoes the description of Devorah, the prophetess and judge, on Torah.org: “Devorah’s unique vitality radiates from the privacy of her own home (where it transforms her husband), to the public domain where it re-inspires the Jewish nation. Devorah’s power to empower is the source of her effec- tiveness as both public leader and wife.” But this modern-day leader faces modern-day struggles. She has four dynamic, active children—Ariella, 17, a senior at Ramaz; Sabrina, 14, a fresh- man at Ramaz; Ilan, 10, a fi fth-grader at HALB; and Yoni, 6, a fi rst-grader at HALB. And they need their strong mother to continue to guide them in their daily childhood dramas. The Schochets have been determined not to let their situation affect the chil- dren, as far as possible, even keep- ing up with Little Leagues, choirs, and other such activities. One of Deb- orah’s closest parent friends from HALB, Cindy Shayovitz, notes, “Deb- orah has always been active in her kids’ lives. She always strove to give them what they need to be their best. Mr. and Mrs. Menachem Marx: Guests of Honor. Over the course of a warm 15-year relationship with Yeshiva Darchei Torah, Menachem and Gila Marx have taken the con- cept of loyalty and devotion to unprecedented heights, as the proud parents of four YDT cur- rent and former students. An active member of the board of directors as well as other communal organiza- tions, and a major donor to all yeshiva campaigns, Mr. Marx played a critical role in the construction of the yeshiva’s beautiful new complex. “Men- achem was instrumental in a creative fundraising venture that marshaled a sizable por- tion of the resources needed to bring the dream to fruition,” relates Lloyd Keilson, cochair- man of the board of trustees. “In addition, he was actively engaged on the ground, involv- ing himself almost daily in the actual construction, from selecting a leading architec- tural fi rm to helping defi ne the yeshiva’s needs and translate them into appropriate plans to helping arrange the necessary fi nancing.” “The new complex would not exist if not for Menachem Marx,” attests Yeshiva Presi- dent Ronald Lowinger. “His passion and his devotion to the yeshiva are extraordinary.” Mr. Marx praises the yeshiva as a “shining example of how chinuch can be instilled in our children with a special warmth that captures the neshamah of each child.” “The Yeshiva is known for its talent for devel- oping each student to his full potential,” he explains, “never calling for a one-size-fi ts-all approach in education.
