La fragmentation atomique de la bulle informatique dans laquelle nous circulons n’a pas fini de s’agrandir, en une sorte de Big Bang dont nous ignorons s’il conduira à un Big Crunch. Toute résistance est futile et inutile ; il vaut mieux se résigner à une vie heureuse et fragmentée. Leur association avec des images en a souvent fait des albums de grande qualité. Au fil du temps, ils sont devenus des ouvrages dont la légèreté, l’inventivité et même la beauté nous charment et nous étonnent. B comme Bilingue Le mot bilingue revient sept fois. Il est en deuxième position, derrière le mot Québec, qui lui, revient neuf fois. Mais il faut dire aussi que la lettre B a quand même plus d’occurrences dans le dictionnaire que la lettre Q, ce qui expliquerait la fréquence du mot Québec, qui par ailleurs identifie cette lettre dans l’alphabet international. MEP Abécédaire.indd 7 17-02-03 09:58 8 • (12) abécédaires C comme Contrainte Je suis d’accord avec Paul Valéry quand il dit que l’art naît de contraintes et meurt d’une trop grande liberté. L’utilisation des vingt-six lettres de l’alphabet comme structure organisationnelle m’a fait réaliser à quel point la liberté est beaucoup plus facile. D comme Deleuze Non, je ne suis pas le seul à avoir recours à cette forme de l’abécédaire puisque le genre a aussi intéressé des penseurs aussi célèbres qu’Albert Jacquart ou, surtout, Gilles Deleuze, dont la pensée me rend toujours extrêmement modeste. E comme Ellipse L’abécédaire est une manière elliptique de traiter un sujet, une manière qui convient bien à notre époque pressée où le monde se comprime en capsules toujours plus succinctes. Éternel dilemme entre aller à contre-courant ou suivre le courant. F comme Fragment Peut-être à cause de la poésie, un genre que j’ai beaucoup pratiqué, j’ai tendance à favoriser une écriture de plus en plus fragmentée. Le pro- blème avec ce type d’écriture, c’est qu’il faut s’arrêter quand on aurait envie de poursuivre ou en rajouter quand les idées nous font défaut. G comme Grandiloquence J’ai toujours associé la grandiloquence au discours religieux, dont nous partageons la lointaine arrogance. Un discours majoritaire qui ne tolère pas le compromis. Ce projet des abécédaires s’inscrit dans une sorte de regard minoritaire, le regard de celui qui observe le monde de biais et le « lit » dans les détails. MEP Abécédaire.indd 8 17-02-03 09:58 Préface • Abécédaire des libraires • 9 H comme Histoire Je suis convaincu que ce sont les artistes qui sauvent le monde, au sens où ils lui donnent une mémoire. Mais cette mémoire, même si le mot est du genre féminin, se décline surtout dans le registre masculin. Que serait une histoire écrite au féminin ? Sans doute une chronique plus près du quotidien, qui restituerait l’odeur, la couleur et la saveur du temps qui passe, trois attributs éminemment féminins. I comme Inventaire J’ai une formation en art visuel, et ce n’est pas par accident que je suis devenu écrivain. Par sa faculté de révéler diverses facettes d’un sujet, je ne doute pas que l’abécédaire rejoint le concept de la série, qui, en arts visuels, selon mon ami Serge Murphy, se voudrait la « volonté d’épuiser une idée ». J comme Jeu Il est bien évident que dans la création d’un abécédaire entre toujours en jeu une dimension ludique, et c’est ce à quoi je me suis consciemment appliqué. Être surprenant, concis, précis et, si possible, divertissant. K comme Keynote speaker Les anglophones désignent ainsi un certain type de conférencier, et j’ai souvent été appelé à être keynote speaker, à parler devant des auditoires mixtes, ce qui ajoute une contrainte supplémentaire pour rendre compte d’une situation linguistique liée à la ville, Moncton, à la province, le Nouveau-Brunswick, et au pays, le Canada, où j’habite. De concert avec les Éditions Prise de parole, nous avons voulu tenir compte de cette dimension du projet en publiant certains abécédaires qui intègrent, à plus ou moins grande échelle, des entrées en anglais. This study was undertaken following the decision of a broad group of partners in Atlantic Canada to join the OECD/IMHE project “Supporting the Contribution of Higher Education Institutions to Regional Development”. Atlantic Canada was one of the last regions, and the only North American region, to enter into this project. It is also one of the largest groups of partners to participate in this OECD project, with engagement from the federal government; four provincial governments, all with separate responsibility for higher education; 17 publicly funded universities; all colleges in the region; and a range of other partners in economic development. As such, it must be appreciated that this report represents a major undertaking in a very short period of time. A research process was put in place to facilitate the completion of this self-evaluation report. The process was multifaceted and consultative in nature, drawing on current data, direct input from HEIs and the perspectives of a broad array of stakeholders across the region. An extensive effort was undertaken to ensure that input was received from all key stakeholders, through surveys completed by HEIs, one-on-one interviews conducted with government officials and focus groups conducted in each province which included a high level of private sector participation.

    Acadian Fiddling Traditions !by Devon Léger When two Acadians meet, the first things we ask each other are along the lines of “Where are you from,” Where’s your family from,” or “What’s your last name?” Acadians are people of a diaspora, a forced migration that spread from our homeland in Eastern Canada throughout the Western world, and to this day there’s a kind of inbred need in us to try and trace our roots back to some kind of common ground. That diaspora is why, try as we might, it’s so hard to define Acadian traditional music. Each region where Acadians settled has its own traditions, and Acadians have always been very accepting and curious about surrounding cultures. Acadians are also a pacifistic people. That’s part of the legend of the Acadians, that by choosing not to choose sides in the French-English wars, we were expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755, an event known as Le Grand Dérangement, or the Great Deportation. It’s a kind of spirit that lasts to this day in the Acadian willingness to accept new influences and new ideas, certainly in music. In a sense, this differentiates Acadians in Canada from our French-speaking cousins in Québec. Québécois culture has a strong streak of independence from the Anglophone world that you don’t find in Acadian culture or music (though early Québécois musicians were just as happy to borrow from Anglophone sources). This also explains why you’ll hear so little traditional Acadian music when you travel to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, but will hear lots of Down East fiddling, Cape Breton Scottish fiddling, Acadian bluegrass, or straight country.

A few curricular landmarks prove useful in correctly understanding the following lines. Born in 1960, Valerius M. Ciucă graduated from primary school in Iasi, then from “Negruzzi” and “National” high schools, his academic formation being ensured by Alma Mater Iassiensis, with a BA degree in law (1984), a capacity exam (1986) and a doctor’s degree in the same field (1997). Consecutive training stages abroad were possible only after the abolition of the communist dictatorship, crowning a certain period of judicial practice. Author: Birgitta Brown Language: English Department: English Department, University of Gothenburg, Box 200, SE-405 30 Gothenburg Anglo-French relations have had a significant influence on the fiction created in Canada’s Maritime Provinces. The 18th century was a period of colonial wars. Contacts between the English and French in Canada were established and de- termined by the hostilities between the two colonizing nations, France and Great Britain. The hostilities passed on a sense of difference between the two nations through situations of othering. Contacts, however, always generate transcultural processes which transcend or mediate cultural difference. Othering and transculturation are closely interdependent phenomena acting in conjunc- tion. They work in processes manifesting themselves in so-called contact zones both during the colonial era and in a postcolonial context. This study investi- gates how processes of othering and transculturation are explored and dis- cussed in a number of Maritime novels, Anglophone and Acadian, published in different decades of the 20th century, in order to account for a broad perspec- tive of the interdependency of othering and transculturation.
