  • PICTURES of the FLOATING WORLD an Exploration of the World of the Yoshiwara, 吉原
Cherry Blossom in the Yoshiwara by Yoshikazu PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD An exploration of the world of the Yoshiwara, 吉原 PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD In the nightless city Floating free from life’s cares Picture memories Haiku Keith Oram INTRODUCTION Japanese woodblock prints that recorded the Ukiyo, the ‘Floating World’ of the Yoshiwara of Edo city were so numerous that during the nineteenth century they were used to wrap ceramics exported to Europe. This practice provided some European artists with their first proper encounter with these beautifully created images. The impact on western art of their bold colours and sensuous line was quite significant influencing many artists of the avant gard. The story of those prints, however, began much earlier in the seventeenth century. First a little background history. The battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and the fall of Osaka in 1615 allowed Tokugawa Ieyasu to gain complete control of Japan. He had been made Shogun, supreme military leader, in 1603, but the fall of Osaka was the final action that gave him complete control. Almost his first act was to move the capital from Kyoto, the realm of the Emperor, to Edo, now Tokyo. This backwater town, now the new capital, grew very quickly into a large town. Tokugawa Iemitsu, Shogun 1623-51, required the daimyo of Japan, local rulers and warlords, to remain in Edo every other year, but when they returned to their fiefs he made them leave their families in the capital. This ‘hostage’ style management, sankin tokai, helped to maintain the peace. The other affect was that the daimyo needed to build large homes in Edo for their families.

Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature By Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in Japanese Literature in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair Professor Alan Tansman Professor Beate Fricke Summer 2018 © 2018 Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe All Rights Reserved Abstract Eyes of the Heart: Illustration and the Visual Imagination in Modern Japanese Literature by Pedro Thiago Ramos Bassoe Doctor of Philosophy in Japanese Literature University of California, Berkeley Professor Daniel O’Neill, Chair My dissertation investigates the role of images in shaping literary production in Japan from the 1880’s to the 1930’s as writers negotiated shifting relationships of text and image in the literary and visual arts. Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work.

Becoming Modern, Becoming Global: Japanese Prints from the Meiji Period (1868-1912) In 1868 the Tokugawa military rulers were overthrown by supporters of Emperor Meiji (whose name means “enlightened rule”), marking the end of the Edo period and ushering in a new era of Japanese government. The restoration of the emperor brought centuries of leadership by feudal military lords to an end and set in motion a series of sweeping changes in the Japanese political system. The Meiji period brought practical power of rule back to the emperor but also led to the establishment of a new form of representational government. Meiji-period reforms introduced a constitutional system whereby the rights and powers of hereditary lords were severely limited, new standardized tax laws established, and a host of other measures directed toward the modernization of the country enacted. The Meiji restoration also marked the beginning of a new level of engagement with other nations. For centuries, Japan had operated under a strict isolationist policy, which came to an end just prior to the Meiji period. The impact of global interaction would become a crucial storyline throughout the new era. By the beginning of the Meiji period, print culture in Japanese cities had been flourishing for well over a century. Pre-Meiji prints feature brightly colored images of actors, courtesans, and scenic views, but the Meiji period’s dramatic social, political, and cultural changes provided a wealth of new subjects for printmakers to capture. This installation presents three groups of Meiji prints-focusing on foreign customs and styles, global warfare, and the modern print-that vividly capture the transformation of Japan.

  • El Grabado Japonés Ukiyo-E De Era Meiji (1868-1912) En La Colección De Arte Oriental De Federico Torralba Del Museo De Zaragoza
Artigrama, núm. 26, 2011, pp. 795-815. Abstract The Museum of Zaragoza (Spain) displays the Collection of Oriental Art Federico Torralba, with Japanese ‘Ukiyo-e’ woodblock prints. In commemoration of the centenary of the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912) we present a study of Japanese prints from this important historical period. This part of the Torralba Collection has received less recognition than Edo period woodblock prints, because of the tendency to underestimate the art of the Meiji era. The main Meiji artists in the collection are Kyoˉsai, Kunichika, Chikanobu, Chikashige, Kunisada III, Yoshitora, Yoshitoshi, Gekkoˉ, Shuntei and Shoˉun.

  • Explaining Ukiyo-E
+ EXPLAINING UKIYO-E DAVID BELL A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand November 2002 2 ABSTRACT The term ukiyo-e refers to a distinctive phenomenon in Japanese art. Ukiyo-e can be defined temporally, geographically and socially; most importantly, it developed its own distinctive stylistic character. Most studies of ukiyo-e have been founded on a descriptive mode: they have sought to identify its principal characteristics, and to describe the different projects of its various schools and artists. Recent research has shifted into a more explanatory mode, locating explanations of ukiyo-e‟s distinctive pictorial character in descriptions of the socio-cultural context to which it pertained. This project seeks to establish richer explanations for the pictorial character of ukiyo-e. It argues that appropriate explanations may be found through a critical appraisal of the conditions which constrained and stimulated the enterprises of ukiyo-e artists. It finds these conditions to be manifest in the conceptual foundations that informed its artists; in the ways artists learned the knowledge and skills of their craft; in the sorts of function ukiyo-e pictures were required to perform; and in two conditions of the artists‟ medium: pictorial devices or conventions and the spatial constraints of their media, and the material conditions with which they worked. No matter how closely works of ukiyo-e artists conformed to the pictorial character common to the school as a whole, each individual also followed an independent pathway. The final chapter acknowledges the ways individual artists were disposed to work differently within the auspices of the broader enterprise.
