Collation: octavo, [vii], 180 pp., in contemporary tan half calf, sprinkled paper boards, green spine label. Condition: some foxing, the spine a little chipped and evidence that a lower label has been removed at some point, but generally a very attractive copy indeed. Very rare Dutch edition: no copy in Australia or NZ First Dutch edition of Shillibeer’s swashbuckling tale of sailing in the Pacific, including his widely-read account of meeting the last of the Bounty survivors on Pitcairn Island. Even apart from it’s Bligh interest, Shillibeer’s book is an important account from an intriguing era in Pacific exploration. Shillibeer’s book was originally published in Taunton (Somerset) in 1817 and again in London later the same year. This Dutch edition is very scarce indeed, and I can find records relating to only two confirmed sales: the first a rather worn copy at Sotheby’s in 1964, at the sale of the library of Senor Alberto Dodero of Buenos Aires (US$22.40); and a second copy, noted as in fair condition, at the small Dutch auction house Bubb-Kupyer in 2004 (EUR 420). $1250 References: Borba de Moraes, p. 797; Ferguson, 767; Sabin, 80845. The Elephant in England Ed Emery [SOAS, University of London] [Transcript of presentation of paper] We can start our journey at SOAS. This is our coat of arms. You see the elephant there. The elephant is looking rather strained. And likewise the camel. And our school motto: “Knowledge is Power”. I discussed this in a brief presentation yesterday evening. We are deconstructing the notion of “knowledge is power”, with a notion of “knowledge coming from the bottom”, so to speak. And regimes of knowledge are interesting to me. Figure 1: SOAS crest So, to get started. Our story of the elephant in England starts in Northern France, probably in the vicinity of Calais. A received truth is that in AD 43 20,000 Roman troops arrived, crossed the English Channel, and they were to stay in Britain for the next 350 years. After the landing the emperor Claudius travelled through Kent with war elephants as part of his military force. Figure 2: The Romans in Britain – diorama, Dover town museum For the next 1,000 years, however, we know nothing regarding the physical presence of elephants in England. But they certainly exist in the popular imagination. And as we come into the Middle Ages they begin to feature in illuminated manuscripts – for instance we have images referencing the military aspect of their usage. And also in ecclesiastical 1 Ed Emery illustrations, in prayer books and the like. Although most of the depictions are clearly not drawn from life, there is at least one realistic depiction of an elephant on a monk’s seat, a misericord, to be found in Exeter Cathedral, dating from the late 1200s. -

The animals were owned by three successive proprietors of the menagerie: Thomas Clark, Gilbert Pidcock and Stephen Polito. Clark’s rhinoceros arrived on 5 June 1790 as a two-year-old from India, largely exhibited at the Lyceum, but shown at Windsor and Ascot races in June 1793 and elsewhere in England until his death in Cosham near Portsmouth (not Corsham) in July 1793. The skin was mounted, possibly bought by William Bullock and subsequently by the Royal Museum in Edinburgh. A painting by George Stubbs should show this animal, but a discrepancy in age and stature is discussed. Pidcock’s rhinoceros was acquired in 1799, dying early in 1800 in Drury Lane, after acquisition by an agent of the German Emperor, Francis II. He is shown on token half-pennies issued by Pidcock, and sketched by artist Samuel Howitt. Polito’s rhinoceros arrived in July 1810, toured England in 1811, and was sold to the continent in October 1814. -
