A Lesson in Stone: Examining Patterns of Lithic Resource Use and Craft-learning in the Minas Basin Region of Nova Scotia By © Catherine L. Department of Archaeology Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2011 St. John’s Newfoundland Abstract Examining the Late Woodland (1500-450 BP) quarry/workshop site of Davidson Cove, located in the Minas Basin region of Nova Scotia, a sample of debitage and a collection of stone implements appear to provide correlates of the novice and raw material production practices. Many researchers have hypothesized that lithic materials discovered at multiple sites within the region originated from the outcrop at Davidson Cove, however little information is available on lithic sourcing of the Minas Basin cherts. Considering the lack of archaeological knowledge concerning lithic procurement and production, patterns of resource use among the prehistoric indigenous populations in this region of Nova Scotia are established through the analysis of existing collections. By analysing the lithic materials quarried and initially reduced at the quarry/workshop with other contemporaneous assemblages from the region, an interpretation of craft-learning can be situated in the overall technological organization and subsistence strategy for the study area. ii Acknowledgements It is a pleasure to thank all those who made this thesis achievable. Environmental Studies Archaeology as Restoration Ecology: A Model from SunWatch Indian Village/ Archaeological Park (33My57)(87 pp.) Director of Thesis: Elliot Abrams This research is intended to demonstrate how SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park presents possibilities for how restoration ecology and archaeology can augment and inform each other by looking at both the site and the environmental restoration at the site from an historical ecology perspective. There are two major themes of this work: first, the application of archaeological data to modern environmental issues and second, the importance of viewing landscapes as both natural and cultural phenomena which interact in a series of complex relationships throughout time. I present a comprehensive overview of the site, providing the paleothnobotanical data collected by previous researchers in order to show how such archaeological data can be used to inform restoration work. The research ends with a presentation of how SunWatch can provide a model for doing this work in other places, as well as a series of questions and criteria necessary for determining when and where it is appropriate. -

Maryland's Environment
Maryland’s Environment: A 20,000 Year History of Change Introduction Over its 4.6 billion year history, the Earth’s crust has been shaped by intertwining chemical, physical, and biological processes. In the inexorable slowness of geologic time, the convection of the Earth’s mantle gave contour to the land. Tectonic movement and climatic cycles shaped ancient seas that created the unique foundation of the Middle Atlantic region of North America. Streams carved hills and valleys, and rainwater weathered rock into soil. At the time of their formation, Maryland’s mountains rivaled the Himalayas in size. Their rock slowly weathered, creating the softer contoured mountains we know today. Over time, Maryland’s bedrock became mantled by fertile soils, mineral deposits, and complex water features – which together create a habitable landscape that has long been attractive to human beings. The political boundaries of the State of Maryland contain an ecologically diverse landscape. Its river systems feed the Chesapeake Bay, the Delaware River, and the Ohio River drainages, and an east-west Western Maryland Mountains span of 249 miles stretches from the Atlantic seaside to the Allegheny Plateau. Across the state, elevations climb from the ocean’s edge to 3,360 feet at Backbone Mountain in Garrett County. Granite bedrock protrudes from the surface of western Maryland, while a wedge of unconsolidated sediments blanket this rocky base to a depth of 8,000 feet at the Atlantic coastline. Maryland’s flora is similarly variable, being a product of the diverse soils, climate, and hydrology of the state. Many different lines of evidence help us to understand how Maryland came to be as it is today. -

While previous studies in the region have focused on broadly based settlement patterns, this study shifted the interpretive lens toward an in-depth analysis of a single family dwelling, which was occupied some 6000 years ago. -

Gill1 Published online: 28 November 2015 Ó Springer Science+Business Media New York 2015 Abstract This article evaluates the current state of paleoethnobotany since Has- torf’s 1999 review published in this journal. We discuss advances in methods, ancient subsistence reconstructions, the origins and intensification of agriculture, and how plants inform on issues of political economy and identity. Significant methodological developments in the extraction, identification, and analysis of starch grains and phytoliths have led to advancements in our knowledge of early plant domestication and the transition to food production. Paleoethnobotanists increas- ingly are using more complex quantitative techniques to characterize their data, which have resulted in more nuanced interpretations of plants that fall within the purview of social archaeology and allow us to address issues related to gender, identity, and ritual practice. What aspects of daily life are framed by flora and negotiated through ethnobotanical practice? What happens to plant remains after they become incorporated into the archaeological record, and what are the methods used to study these "ecofacts"? How can we use plant remains to answer archaeological and anthropological questions? How do paleoethnobotanical interpretations contribute to our understanding of history and structure our public policy? In this course, we will engage with archaeobotanical laboratory methods and ethnobotanical interpretation through scholarship and hands-on practice. The course is arranged around 1) exploring the major classes of plant remains likely to be encountered in archaeological sites; 2) identifying these remains and organizing the data to make interpretable results; and 3) addressing major issues within the sub-discipline including preservation, analytical methods, sampling, collection, and interpretation. The broad goals are to: - Learn about macro- and micro-botanical analysis of archaeological plant material; - Understand the problems and range of archaeological research using paleoethnobotanical data; - Gain knowledge of paleoethnobotanical analysis from sampling to interpretation; and - Consider the broader applications of paleoethnobotanical interpretation, including economics, identity, foodways, politics, symbolism, and historical ecology. The class will proceed partly as a seminar, with discussions on assigned readings, and partly as a laboratory section, with practicums and field trips. -
