In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. Fairfax did not announce it quite as bluntly as that, instead describing its action within the context of a “business improvement plan”. It sent an email to all its employees, announcing “a major restructure of corporate and group services and significant initiatives to improve the overall productivity and performance of many of our businesses”. John Lyons, a former Fairfax editor, and Caroline Overington reported (Australian, 27 August 2008, pp.1-2): “Fairfax Media is abandoning quality journalism at its flagship newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, according to staff who yesterday rejected a company plan to shed 550 jobs. Chief executive David Kirk and his deputy Brian McCarthy told the Australian Stock Exchange and newspaper staff via email yesterday that Fairfax hoped to save $50 million by cutting the jobs in Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand – 5 per cent of its full- time workforce.” The company‟s metropolitan newspapers recorded a 9 per cent drop in profit in 2007-08. -

The company’s total revenue of $US8.63 billion for the financial year 2015 reflected growth in the Book Publishing and Digital Real Estate Services segments. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation increased 11 per cent to $US852m. On a full-year basis, News Corporation made a net loss of $US149m, compared to net income of $US237 million in the previous year. -

The Hollywood Cinema Industry’s Coming of Digital Age: the Digitisation of Visual Effects, 1977-1999 Volume I Rama Venkatasawmy BA (Hons) Murdoch This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. -------------------------------- Rama Venkatasawmy Abstract By 1902, Georges Méliès’s Le Voyage Dans La Lune had already articulated a pivotal function for visual effects or VFX in the cinema. It enabled the visual realisation of concepts and ideas that would otherwise have been, in practical and logistical terms, too risky, expensive or plain impossible to capture, re-present and reproduce on film according to so-called “conventional” motion-picture recording techniques and devices. Since then, VFX – in conjunction with their respective techno-visual means of re-production – have gradually become utterly indispensable to the array of practices, techniques and tools commonly used in filmmaking as such. For the Hollywood cinema industry, comprehensive VFX applications have not only motivated the expansion of commercial filmmaking praxis. They have also influenced the evolution of viewing pleasures and spectatorship experiences. Following the digitisation of their associated technologies, VFX have been responsible for multiplying the strategies of re-presentation and story-telling as well as extending the range of stories that can potentially be told on screen. By the same token, the visual standards of the Hollywood film’s production and exhibition have been growing in sophistication. -

Suddenly the future was tremendously uncertain for 3000 or more employees of the two major Australian newspaper companies and hundreds of thousands of readers. Probably one-quarter of the uncertain jobs belonged to journalists and editors. Fairfax was specific: 1900 jobs would be lost. News did not set a figure, but the estimates by observers put the losses at between 1000 and 1500 jobs. Borut Marko Lah Ekonomska učinkovitost globalnih medijskih konglomeratov Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2015 Ekonomska učinkovitost globalnih medijskih konglomeratov V zadnjih tridesetih letih so prevzemi in spojitve postali ena najpogostejših strategij podjetij v medijski industriji. Mnogi avtorji takšno združevanje medijskih podjetij povezujejo z maksimiranjem dobička, saj naj bi se na ta način povečala tako tržna moč kot tudi učinkovitost poslovanja podjetij. V diplomskem delu trdim, da koncentrirano medijsko lastništvo ne povečuje ekonomske učinkovitosti kapitala. Sinergije ne prinašajo pričakovanih izjemnih dobičkov. Doseg diplomskega dela ni tako velik, da bi lahko sama izvedla kvantitativno analizo največjih globalnih medijskih konglomeratov, zato sem ga napisala pretežno teoretično, ob tem pa sem se naslonila na nekaj mednarodno objavljenih študij. Rezultati delno podpirajo mojo prvotno hipotezo, saj so pokazali, da nekateri ekonomski kazalniki ne kažejo boljših rezultatov v tistih medijskih podjetjih, v katerih se je kapital v veliki meri združeval in koncentriral. Zdi se, da so megamedijske združitve za marsikoga razočaranje. Ključne besede: medijska industrija, prevzemi in spojitve, medijski konglomerati, koncentracija lastništva, sinergije. Economic efficiency of global media conglomerates In the past thirty years, acquisitions and mergers have become one of the most common strategies of companies in the media industry. Many authors associate such integration of media companies with profit maximization, since it should increase market power and efficiency of business operations. In the thesis I argue that concentrated media ownership does not increase the economic efficiency of capital. -
