CC Feb 05.Qxd “where a good crime C r i m e can be had by all” c h r o n i c l e Issue #229 February 2005 AUTHOR OF THE MONTH BORIS AKUNIN Boris Akunin burst onto the English crime world in 2003 with his first Erast Fandorin mystery, The Winter Queen (Pb 19.95), set in Moscow, 1876. A young law student commits suicide in broad daylight in Moscow’s Alexander Gardens. But this is no ordinary death, for the young man was the son of an influential industrialist. Erast Fandorin, a hotheaded new recruit to the Criminal Investigation Department, is assigned to the case. Brilliant, young and sophisticated, Fandorin embarks on an investigation that will take him from the palatial mansions of Moscow to the seedy backstreets of London in his hunt for the conspirators. 2004 saw the publication of the second volume, Murder on the Leviathan (Pb 19.95). On 15 March 1878, Lord Littleby, an English eccentric and collector, is found murdered in his Paris house, together with nine members of his staff. A gold whale is found in the victim’s hand – a badge owned only by the first class ticket holders on the maiden voyage of the Leviathan, the world’s largest steamship. Commissioner Gauche of the French police is called to solve the ‘Crime of the Century’ and narrows the suspects down to ten, who are forced to eat every meal together in the ship’s Windsor Suite. Amongst these ten is the elegant young Erast Fandorin. Can he discover the murderer’s identity before Gauche? Now the third adventure, which is set between the previous two books during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, Turkish Gambit (Tp 29.95), is available. There is a traitor in the Russian camp and our reluctant gentleman sleuth will need to resurrect all of his KERRY GREENWOOD dormant powers of detection if he is to unmask the traitor, help the Russians to victory and smooth the REPRINTS path of young love. • Boris Akunin and the Rise of the Russian Detective Genre
Olga Sobolev Boris Akunin and the Rise of the Russian Detective Genre There are very few people in Russia who have not read at least one of Boris Akunin’s nine Adventures of Erast Fandorin, do not have a cou- ple of them lying on a coffee table or who are unable to discuss ‘Erast’ at social events. Akunin’s detective novels have thousands of admirers all over Russia, and recently Fandorin has reached an even wider audi- ence, with ORT1 producing a television version of the first book in the series, Azazel′ (first published in 1988).2 Not surprisingly, then, critics refer to ‘Erastomania’.3 However, popularity and critical recognition are often mutually exclusive, and the opinion of Russian scholars is far from being unanimous. On the one hand, the virtues of Akunin’s work were acknowledged when his Coronation (published in 1999) won the 2000 Anti-Booker Prize; on the other, this award gave rise to numerous ob- jections, which can be briefly summarized in the question: why should a literary prize be awarded to a bestseller?4 Putting aside the tricky concept of ‘worthy’ literature, which causes much of the controversy surrounding Russian literary prizes,5 one might focus on the notion that awards such as the Anti-Booker (and, arguably, the Booker) attempt to identify the predominant and typical trends in contemporary literary life. Prizes are, therefore, often awarded to works embodying, or providing paradigms, of these trends, and it is against the background of such a generic notion that Akunin’s work can best be discussed.

  • The Relationship Between the Hero and the Villains in Boris Akunin’S Turkish Gambit and State Counsellor
Transcultural Studies, 6-7 (2010-2011), 187-199. SVETLANA TISHCHENKO MY HERO IS A VILLIAN: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HERO AND THE VILLAINS IN BORIS AKUNIN’S TURKISH GAMBIT AND STATE COUNSELLOR This article examines the relationship between the hero and the villains in Boris Akunin’s crime fiction novels, with particular focus on Turkish Gambit and State Counsellor. Taking Karl P.Wenterdorf’s article “Mirror-Images in Great Expectations”1 as a theoretical basis, I argue that the villains in Turkish Gambit and State Counsellor are doubles if not mirror-images of the main character. This theoretical perspective allows for the role evaluation of other characters in Boris Akunin’s novels: women, servants, superiors, and so on. Boris Akunin and his Hero Boris Akunin is one of the most popular writers in Russia today. Moreover, he is one of the few brand-writers. Beside a series of detective novels, Akunin has written movie scripts, has started fan web-sites, and has a page in LiveJournal. Recently, Akunin also became very active in Russian politics. So far, Akunin has written fourteen books in his most successful series on Erast Fandorin’s adventures, three novels about a nun turned detective, and several children’s books. He has created a new series of detective novels he calls ‘roman-kino’. This is a hybrid genre, situated between the novel and the comic. There have been eight books in the series or ‘фильмав’(genitive singu- lar of the word ‘фильм’, used to coin a non-standard word with a new suffix: ‘фильмав’) to date.

  • Some Perspectives on Boris Akunin's Erast Fandorin Series
Eugenia Gresta From Moscow to London and Return: Some Perspectives on Boris Akunin’s Erast Fandorin Series The beginnings of crime fiction in Russia date back to the second half of the 19th century. Detektivy appeared at roughly the same time as the detective story in England, but very different literary traditions developed in the two countries. Arthur Conan Doyle and then the authors of the Golden Age explored and expanded the classic “whodunit”. The layout of the plot in a detective story envisages a murder, investigated by a sleuth, who’s usually a private individual. The detective gathers evidence and identifies the culprit. The offender is punished, and order is eventually restored. In Russia crime writing debuted with Fëdor Dostoevskii’s Crime and Punishment, published in 1866. The protagonist is a student, Rodion Raskol’nikov, who kills an old pawnbroker and her sister. What motivates the culprit is a strong sense of social justice. Raskol’nikov wants to take from the evil woman what she exploited from people in need, and give it to the poor. The aim to bring justice combines with a dilemma originating from the crime itself: whether it is ethically acceptable to kill an evildoer in the name of good. In this first attempt at crime fiction, Dostoevskii introduces the offender at the beginning of the story; the reader is acquainted with his crime right away, and knows he is the murderer. Through the use of dramatic irony, the author keeps the offender’s identity concealed from the other characters, and sets up an investigation.

Based on the analysis of the works “Azazel”, “Decorator”, “Scarpei Baskakovs”, “Prisoner of the Tower”, a number of conclusions are made about the specifics of B. Akunin’s intertextual strategy. It is shown that the intertextual dialogue between Akunin and Conan Doyle is carried out through character and narrative pro- jections, in particular, structural stylization, the transposition of the plot on Russian soil, etc. The ambiguous role of Conan Doyle receptions, performing, firstly, the para-genre (detective) function of plot-semantic coding, secondly, the function of the transtextual riddle, the solution of which lies outside the work – in the Conan Doyle pretext, thirdly, the function of a parody imitation of the predecessor’s stylistic manner, including the specifics of Russian translations of short stories about Sherlock Holmes, is revealed.
