I have to give Boris Akunin credit for attempting an ambitious spin to this series by writing in a different mystery genre for each book. These two stories represented "comical adventure" and "gory thriller". The best part of these entries for me was the introduction of Anisii Tulipov as Erast Fandorin's assistant which also becomes a negative in the second story as you will see later in this review. First, the "Jack of Spades". This story was a straight three. The biggest plus was Tulipov. I liked the idea of an assistant helping Fandorin and Tulipov's character was a perfect foil to Fandorin's brilliance and supposed perfection. I also liked Tulipov's backstory and the fact he was diligent in taking care of his special needs sister. The negative for me was I just don't think Akunin pulled off the comical aspects very well. Another negative. Fandorin was foiled time and time again by the Jack of Spades. In fact, he doesn't even catch him in the end. And Akunin certainly got the gory part down very well. Two things I didn't like aside from the gory thriller aspect. I think the fact Tulipov's sister was going to become a victim of the serial killer was telegraphed way ahead of time. Of course, I wasn't expecting the demise of Tulipov himself which was the biggest problem I had with this story. I was looking forward to seeing him paired up with Fandorin from here on out and I was left very disappointed at the end. We'll see if Mr. Special Assignments: the Further Adventures of Erast Fandorin does better in his next attempt, a political mystery. I don't think this is up to the standard of the two other Akunin books I've read. Actually, there are two novellettes here -- one about a con artist and one about a serial killer. With the help of his assistant Tulipov, Fandorin uses his deductive skills and eclectic knowledge to track down, first, a major league scam artist and then a maniacal killer who may or may not be Jack the Ripper. I found the stories interesting, but not riveting. The scam artist story was just average and the other one, only slightly above average, when it came to reader satisfaction. But, I'm a loyal Akunin fan and will move on to the next volumes with anticipation. This latest work about Erast Fandorin gives the reader two shorter tales of his investigations. The first one, in which his new assistant is introduced, is more of an amusing story, even though it involves crimes, of a sort. The second tale, however, is grim and grisly, with murders, vivisections, and just plain awful things happening. Oddly enough, both stories involve miscreants named "Jack", which is about all that I will say on that score. Where the first tale ends in farce, the second ends in tragedy and sorrow. Erast has really changed from the callow youth we first met in "The Winter Queen", Special Assignments: the Further Adventures of Erast Fandorin now he appears more like Sherlock Holmes, aloof and cerebral, rather than the more human side we learned to admire. I actully prefer the younger Erast, but time goes on and people age and mature, so we now have this "new" Erast, and will go down his future paths of investigation with him, as I know there are at least another six Erast novels written. I like very much his style, managing to describe the world at that time in a very lively way. But this one is not my favorite. This book contains two different narratives, being the first one the chase of Jack the Ripper in Moscow. Very difficult to swallow, being the Ripper a very English character! The second is entertaining and funny, I liked very much. I guess he introduces clips of newspapers of the epoch, I could well imagine the atmosphere. Akuning is superb in bringing up a city and their characters. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. Alexa Actionable Analytics for the Web.
