Overall, 27 species were identified from 41 samples collected between September 2001 and August 2002. The most numerous species in this study were Veigaia nemorensis, Leptogamasus cristulifer, and Gamasellus montanus. Our study has also confirmed the occurrence or rare mite species, such asVeigaia mollis and Paragamasus insertus. Additionally, 5 mite species were recorded as new to the fauna of this Park: Vulgarogamasus remberti, Macrocheles tardus, Pachylaelaps vexillifer, Iphidosoma physogastris, and Dendrolaelaps (Punctodendrolaelaps) eichhorni. Religious Tourism in Areas of Environmental Value in Poland

Podchorazych 2; 30-084 Krakow e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRCT: The study presents pilgrimage sites located in environmentally valuable areas – the areas subject to two forms of nature protection in Poland, i.e. national parks and natural landscape parks. The purpose of the paper is to present, in quantitative terms, shrines in the protected areas of Poland and to analyse the scale and forms of tourism relating to these sites. The subject of the research includes only shrines of the Roman Catholic Church. A descriptive-analytic method, a dynamic-com- parative method, as well as statistical methods were used to present the study results. Over 70 of more than 830 shrines that operate in Poland nowadays are located in areas of nature protected by legislation. At present, in the area of nine Polish national parks, there are twelve shrines and pilgrimage sites that are frequently visited by pilgrims and tourists traveling for religious or reli- gious and cognitive reasons. Nowadays, in the area of Polish natural landscape parks (with buffer zones), there are more than 60 shrines. 1994, 43 (1): 7-10 Towarzystwo "|\ J\ PL ISSN 0023-4249 ÖESÄ IV U O IV IU O THE EARTH SUMMIT AND PRESERVATION OF NATURE IN POLAND Degradation of natural environment by pollution, increasing use of chemicals in agriculture, introduction of new toxic and slowly decomposing substances which had never before eXisted on the Earth, as well as immense changes brought about in the lithosphere, left the problems of biosphere protection somewhat neglected. It might even seem, especially taking into account the policy of environment protection in Poland (eXpressed in numerous publications and in our law concerning environment), that preservation of living resources of nature is treated as something of lesser importance, or as a relic of the XIX century. Degradation of the environment by technology, and technical means of environment protection are treated as the most important issues. On the other hand, little attention is paid to preservation of living resources. The 2nd United Nations Conference „Environment and Development” held in Rio de Janeiro on 3-14 June 1992, called the Earth Summit, brought about fundamental changes in the approach to those problems, stressing the priority of preservation of living resources of nature. This was eXpressed in the Conven tion on Biological Diversity submitted at this conference. For the first time ever such a large gathering, representing almost all countries of the globe, declared that each gene, each species and each ecological system should be preserved — because each of them is unique and irreproducible as it came into being in the course of evolution. Never so far the basic postulate of nature preservation has been presented in such a straightforward, consequent and powerful way. -

6 Oryx NATURE CONSERVATION IN POLAND Nature Conservation in Poland is regulated by an Act of 7th April, 1949. This law reflects modern ideas of conservation and was, in fact, developed from two international nature congresses in which Poland took part—Brunnen, 1947, and Fontainebleau, 1948. The act contains a clear statement which can hardly be bettered of the purpose of nature conservation. " Nature conservation, as understood in the present Act, means the preservation, restitution and suitable use of :— 1. Natural resources ; 2. Individual examples and accumulations of animate and inanimate nature—as well as communities in particular areas—the conservation of which is desirable in the public interest, for scientific, aesthetic or social reasons, or is dictated by the special character of the landscape." The task of the nature conservation authorities is therefore to provide for " reasonable use of natural resources in accordance with principles aiming at safeguarding and regenerating nature's productive capacity." ORGANIZATION Control of nature conservation in Poland rests with the Minister of Forests and Wood Industry. He appoints the Chief Conservator of Nature who is at the head of the Nature Conserva- tion Administration being an independent department of the Ministry of Forests and Wood Industry. Both National Parks and the Breeding Centres for the European bison come under the Nature Conservation Administration. A similar organization is carried down to the Palatinate level, the Palatinate Conserva- tor of Nature being appointed in agreement with the Minister of Forests. All the above authorities possess executive power; other authorities must consult with them about any schemes which are likely to influence the natural equilibrium significantly. -

Location Poland is a Central European country that lies at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe. Poland shares borders with Lithuania, Bela- rus and Ukraine to the east; Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south; Germany to the west, and in the north Poland is bordered by Russia and the Baltic Sea. Poland’s surface area of 312.685 sq km ranks eighth in Eu- rope (larger European countries being Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain and Sweden). Poland is almost an unbroken plain and is roughly circle-like. It measures about 650 km across (both east-west and north-south). Poland is one of nine Baltic Sea States and occupies more than 500 km of the southern Baltic coast. In the south, Poland occupies a strip of the Carpathian and Sudeten Mountains (belonging to the Czech Massif); in the west – the eastern part of the Central European Lowland; and, in the east, the West Russian (or East European) Plain and (North) Ukrainian Upland move in. 2. Topography Poland is a country with varied topography. It can boast almost all Eu- ropean landscape types – the mountains, uplands, lowlands and seacoast. Muhar 2002, pages 364-370 Impacts of Tourism Load on the Mountain Environment (A Case Study of the Krkonoše Mountains National Park - the Czech Republic) Jan Stursa Krkonose Mountains National Park Administration, 543 11 Vrchlabi, Czech Republic Email: [email protected] Abstract: Krkonose Mountains (the Giant Mountains in Czech) as the highest mountains of the Czech Republic belong to the most visited middle-european mountains as they are well facilitated for both summer and winter outdoor recreation. More than 8 million visitors within a year means very serious tourism load on the mountain landscape and ecosystems. Primary impacts (e.g. disturbing plants and animals by trampling and noise, soil erosion or cummulation of rubish) together with secondary impacts of tourism development (a.g. arrising of accomodation capacity, impact on traditional landscape infrastructure by reebuilding of original small mountain chalets, nonsufficient disposal of waste, transport of allochtone organisms) create very cotraversional background for sustainable use of the mountains which are the oldest national park of the Czech Republic. Paper describes these impacts and suggests some forms of conflict solution between tourism development and statutes of the national park.
