ARNOLD SORSBY always become manifest, and there is some indication that the mani- festation, or suppression of genetic tendencies, are in some cases con- ditioned by simple chemical stimuli. Experimental work on genetically determined pathological abnormalities can therefore be carried out in the confident knowledge that it is not a.rigid system which is being studied but a labile biological process. There is some evidence, too, that unwittingly control of some genetic anomalies has already been achieved. Whilst no analogy is ever completely satisfying, and whilst history never quite repeats itself, it is perhaps not too much to suggest that the medical geneticist to-day has reached the stagb Jenner reached when he introduced vaccination for smallpox. Jenner achieved empirical control of one infectious disease, and could not foresee the coming of bacteriology with its experimental procedures, and of the antibiotics with their con- summation of an age-long dream. To-day, no geneticist doubts that the genetic counterparts of bacteriology and the antibiotics have become inevitable developments-if medicine so wills it.
