  • CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1Background of Research
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1Background of Research Environment, technology and human have never been separated. They were growing together. Great achievements in the history of humanity would have never existed without them. In literature, this interrelationship can be depicted in thescience fiction genre which displays technology ina new imaginary future or a new technology that may influence new inventions, nowadays. In A Glossary of Literary Term, M.H Abrams stated, “These terms encompass novels and short stories that represent an imagined reality that is radically different in its nature and functioning from the world of our ordinary experience. Often the setting is another planet, or this earthprojected into the 112, or an imagined parallel universe” (Abrams 278) Many authors inserted technology and environment of their work to their writings. One of them is an American famous author, Michael Crichton, a writing name of John Michael Crichton. He was born on October 23rd, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. Some of his novels were adapted to motion pictures such as Rising Sun in 1993 after it was published in 1992, The Lost World in 1995, filmed in 1997, and Disclosure in 1994. He died in the age of 66 on November 4th, 2008, in Los Angeles, California. He was a student of Harvard Medical School when he wrote a best-seller novel, The Andromeda Strain in 1969. Crichton won Emmy Award, Writer's Guild of America Award and Peabody Award as validation of his achievement. During his life, he wrote 27 fiction novels, 10 short stories, and 4 non-fiction works as social criticism.

I believe we’re going to start grappling with some of these questions far earlier than we anticipated.” Jonathan Nolan (Westworld Co- Creator, 2016) These questions have been grappled by a number of news stories this week. The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that DeepMind has become the second Alphabet company to disband an AI ethics panel, commentary from the UK considers the ethics of self driving cars, and CBS have commented on an academic studio which identifies bias in AI systems by a workforce dominated by white men. I’ll return to some of these issues at the end of this presentation. The theme park location of HBO’s Westworld (2016-), shares some traits of Michael Crichton’s 1973 feature film of the same name.

  • Rising Sun, Iron Cross – Military Germany in Japanese Popular Culture
Rising Sun, Iron Cross – Military Germany in Japanese Popular Culture RISING SUN, IRON CROSS – MILITARY GERMANY IN JAPANESE POPULAR CULTURE Matthew Penney Abstract: Diverse depictions of the WWII German army exist in Japanese popular culture. This essay will explore the origins of the Japanese fandom devoted to Ger- man military technology and also the way that authors have (re)produced stereo- types related to German culture and traditions in their portrayals of wartime Ger- many. Finally, using examples by authors Tezuka Osamu and Aramaki Yoshio, this essay will identify the representation of both Japanese and German war crimes in Japanese manga and popular fiction as a significant discursive trend that calls into question assumptions about anti-war thought in contemporary Japan. INTRODUCTION Political commentator and philosopher Jürgen Habermas (1929–) wrote that “[t]here is the obligation incumbent upon us in Germany […] to keep alive, without distortion, and not only in an intellectual form, the memory of the sufferings of those who were murdered by German hands” (Haber- mas 1987: 233). In many ways, this statement captures the attitude toward Nazi history that has taken root in postwar Germany, and indeed, world- wide. What Habermas refers to is the necessity for the representation of Nazi cruelties outside of intellectual discourse and in the popular sphere. Popular expression, however, is diverse by its very nature and the milita- ristic Germany of WWII has been depicted in different ways, both inside and outside of Germany. It has been argued, for example, that the idea of the United States of America as the heroic vanquisher of the Nazi terror has had a major impact on the way that many Americans perceive the global role of their nation (Fujiwara 2001: 3–10).
