Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

BHUIYAN Department of Entomology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh 1Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, Bangladesh Abstract The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Sher- e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from May 2009 to April 2010 to study the biology of the Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Oliver) in Bangladesh. The ovipositional period, incubation period, larval period, pre-pupal period and pupal period of Angoumois grain moth were 3.67 days, 5.5 days, 25.2 days, 3.0 days and 5.0 days, respectively; male and female longevity of moth were 8.0 and10 days, respectively. The lengths of all five larval instars were 1.0 ± 0.00, 2.0 ± 0.02, 4.0 ± 0.06, 5.0 ± 0.03 and 4.0 ± 0.06 mm, and the widths were 0.10 ± 0.0, 0.4 ± 0.0, 0.6 ± 0.01, 0.8 ± 0.02 and 1.0 ± 0.09 mm, respectively. The length and width of the pre-pupa and the pupa were 4.0 ± 0.02, 3.5 ± 0.01 mm and 1.20 ± 0.05, 1.50 ± 0.03 mm respectively. The length of male and female was 11.2 ± 0.09 and 12.07 ± 0.06 mm respectively. Vol. 31, December 31,1992 177 Taxonomic Status and Host Range of Three HeteropsyUa spp. (Homoptera: Psyllidae) in Hawaii WALTER T. NAGAMINE, BERNARR R. KUMASH1RO, and LARRY M. NAKAHARA1 ABSTRACT. The laxonomic status of two species of Hftrrvpsytla in Hawaii was clarified after confusion arose because of inadequate identification keys and the collection of mixed popu lations from a common host plant. A third species of llrtrmfisylla was also discovered for the first time in Hawaii (hiring January 1986. Most range tests were conducted with nine leguminous plants, lletemfisylla rubana Crawford, a senior synonym of //. inetia (Sulc), completed its development on leucaena (Ijnuarna UucocephaUt (l.am.) de Wit) and monkeypod (Samanea saman (Jacq.) Mem); //. huasachae Caldwell on koa (Acacia koa Gray), monkeypcxl, and slender mimosa (Desmanlhus virgatus (I.) Willd.); and //. fusca Crawford on klu {Acacia farnesiana (1..) Willcl.). Clarification of the taxonomic status of two HeteropsyUa spp. present in Hawaii was made recently. The close resemblance of the species within this genus, in addition to the collection of mixed populations from a common host plant, led to some early confusion. At that time, the need for revision of the HeteropsyUa group precluded their identifications. Later, with the revision work completed (Brown 1985, Burckhardt 1986, 1987) and with assistance of collaborators R. Brown and I. Hodkinson2, D. Burckhardt3, D. Hollis4, and D. Miller and L. Russell5, the determinations of two HeteropsyUa spp., H. cubana Crawford and H. huasachae Caldwell, were made. A third species, H. fusca Crawford, was later identified by I. Hodkinson, R. Brown, and D. Hollis. A summary of the three psyllids in Hawaii is presented below. -

Records are given for 43 species of insects and other small organisms not previously reported to be established in Hawaii. These species were first collected and identified during 1999 or earlier and are now believed to be established in the state. Known information on the taxonomy and biology is provided. The following are new records for immigrant insects and other small arthropods and mollusks that have been found in the Hawaiian Islands (Kurc Atoll to Hawaii Island) and identified during 1999 or before, but have not previously been reported as established in any publication. A complete listing of all new state records of terrestrial arthropods and mollusks in Hawaii, published during the eight-year period of 1991-1998, is presented in a separate paper (Kumashiro, Nishida, and Beardsley) in this volume. Common names for species are provided if they have been formally accepted. For other cases, the common name of the family and a host is given. These have been designated with "a" or "an." Biodiversität Von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) Im Gebiet Des Naturparks Schlern
Gredleriana Vol. 7 / 2007 pp. 233 - 306 Biodiversität von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) im Gebiet des Naturparks Schlern Peter Huemer Abstract Biodiversity of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) of the Schlern nature park (South Tyrol, Italy) The species diversity of Lepidoptera within the Schlern nature park has been explored during the vegetation periods 2006 and 2007. Altogether 1030 species have been observed in 16 sites, covering about one third of the entire fauna from the province of South Tyrol. Fifteen additional species have been collected during the diversity day 2006 whereas further 113 species date back to historical explorations. The species inventory includes 20 new records for South Tyrol which are briefly reviewed. Among these speciesMicropterix osthelderi, Rhigognostis incarnatella and Cydia cognatana are the first proved records from Italy. Further two species from the surroundings of the Park include the first published records ofPhyllonorycter issikii and Gelechia sestertiella for Italy. Site specific characteristics of Lepidoptera coenosis are discussed in some detail. Historical aspects of lepidopterological exploration of the Schlern are briefly introduced. Einleitung Der Schlern übt als einer der klassischen Dolomitengipfel schon weit über 100 Jahre eine geradezu magische Anziehungskraft auf Naturwissenschaftler unterschiedlichster Coleurs aus (Abb. 1). Seine Nähe zum Siedlungsraum und vor allem die damit verbundene relativ leichte Erreichbarkeit haben wohl zur Motivation mehrerer Forschergenerationen beigetragen, das Gebiet näher zu untersuchen. Zusätzlich war wohl die Arbeit von GREDLER (1863) über Bad Ratzes für manchen Entomologen ein Anlass die Fauna des Schlerns näher unter die Lupe zu nehmen. The strong reproductive ability is one of the main reasons for serious damage by the codling moths. In this study, the morphological characteristics of the male and female adult reproductive systems are dissected and described. The two testicular follicles are closely connected to each other like a single organ and enveloped in the lavender adventitia. The corpus bursae have a pair of horn-shaped signa instead of cysticerci. The aedeagus has 7 cornuti are in the middle. During the process of sexual maturation, we observed that an antheridium is formed in the section of ductus seminalis between corpus bursae and ostiumbursae.
