LOCUST VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY [email protected] This article was featured in the Locust Valley Leader on June 16, 2004, entitled “Matinecock Monthly Meeting House Receives Grant.” Continued…

The Meeting has 57 members, with average attendance of 25 at weekly services. The meeting house is used frequently during the week as an assembly and worship space by Friends Academy, the large private school located across the street. Community use of the facility is limited by the local zoning ordinance, which restricts parking and other public assembly in this largely residential neighborhood. The existing cedar shingle roof, less than 20 years old, is failing due to the installation of plywood sheathing underlayment, which restricted air circulation and accelerated rotting. The congregation has recently completed cedar shingle repairs and reroofing at the ancillary buildings, and has obtained a proposal from an experienced roofing contractor. The roof will cost $40,000 to replace. The Meeting is facing a total of $125,000 in needed restoration funds.
