Colorado Blvd., Suite 970-S, Denver, CO 80246. 1 Background n September 11, 2001, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in the United Kingdom was in the middle of its annual conference. Astounded by what had happened in O New York and Washington, the Institute took immediate action to assist environmental health in the U.S. in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. The Institute donated a sum of money to the National Environmental Health Association to use in ways that NEHA saw fit. NEHA's first idea was to forward the funds to public health agencies affected by these events in the DC, Northern Virginia, and New York City areas. These agencies, however, indicated that they did not need the financial assistance. The NEHA Board of Directors discussed the appropriate use of these funds at length. A decision was made to have a professional writer prepare a "Lessons Learned" report that would examine the response of environmental health professionals to the events of Sept 11, 2001. A committee was formed to develop the request for proposal (RFP) that would be sent to professional writers and reporters, especially those in the impacted areas. The committee would also evaluate the RFP submissions and select the author.

Greig Crysler Professor Richard Walker Summer 2015 Sagan Copyright page Sagan Abstract Specters of '68: Protest, Policing, and Urban Space by Hans Nicholas Sagan Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture University of California, Berkeley Professor Galen Cranz, Chair Political protest is an increasingly frequent occurrence in urban public space. During times of protest, the use of urban space transforms according to special regulatory circumstances and dictates. The reorganization of economic relationships under neoliberalism carries with it changes in the regulation of urban space. Environmental design is part of the toolkit of protest control. Existing literature on the interrelation of protest, policing, and urban space can be broken down into four general categories: radical politics, criminological, technocratic, and technical- professional. Each of these bodies of literature problematizes core ideas of crowds, space, and protest differently. This leads to entirely different philosophical and methodological approaches to protests from different parties and agencies. This paper approaches protest, policing, and urban space using a critical-theoretical methodology coupled with person-environment relations methods. This paper examines political protest at American Presidential National Conventions. Using genealogical-historical analysis and discourse analysis, this paper examines two historical protest event-sites to develop baselines for comparison: Chicago 1968 and Dallas 1984. Two contemporary protest event-sites are examined using direct observation and discourse analysis: Denver 2008 and St.

  • Introduction 1 Mimesis and Film Languages
Notes Introduction 1. The English translation is that provided in the subtitles to the UK Region 2 DVD release of the film. 2. The rewarding of Christoph Waltz for his polyglot performance as Hans Landa at the 2010 Academy Awards recalls other Oscar- winning multilin- gual performances such as those by Robert de Niro in The Godfather Part II (Coppola, 1974) and Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice (Pakula, 1982). 3. T h is u nder st a nd i ng of f i l m go es bac k to t he era of si lent f i l m, to D.W. Gr i f f it h’s famous affirmation of film as the universal language. For a useful account of the semiotic understanding of film as language, see Monaco (2000: 152–227). 4. I speak here of film and not of television for the sake of convenience only. This is not to undervalue the relevance of these questions to television, and indeed vice versa. The large volume of studies in existence on the audiovisual translation of television texts attests to the applicability of these issues to television too. From a mimetic standpoint, television addresses many of the same issues of language representation. Although the bulk of the exempli- fication in this study will be drawn from the cinema, reference will also be made where applicable to television usage. 1 Mimesis and Film Languages 1. There are, of course, examples of ‘intralingual’ translation where films are post-synchronised with more easily comprehensible accents (e.g. Mad Max for the American market).

  • “What Is Saving Your Life?” May 10
“What Is Saving Your Life?” May 10, 2020 Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16 Westminster, Greenville Fifth Sunday of Easter Ben Dorr ********************************************************** A number of years ago, the pastor Scott Black Johnston was leading a Sunday School class for 7th graders. He was a guest participant, and the topic was something like “Ask the pastor any question you want”. So one of the teenagers asked: “Is Jesus the only way to salvation?” Scott said he would give them his answer to that question. But first, he wanted to ask them a different question. “What do you think Jesus wants to save you from?” he asked the class. One of the 7th graders said, “Hell.” And Scott says that while he believes the answer was honest, he was also a bit suspicious. Like that was the kind of answer that he imagined a 7th grader THOUGHT the pastor of the church was expecting…better give the “correct” answer, saved from hell, that’s what God does. So Scott reframed the question: “If God was on the ball, what would God save you from?” Like…right now? Suddenly, Scott says, the conversation got VERY interesting. 2 One young man offered up that God could really help by saving him from an upcoming math test. Then another classmate said, “Pressure.” And another said, “My parents’ expectations.” Then another member of the class, a shy kid, said—almost in a whisper: “Fear. I want God to save me from my fears.”1 ****** If you had been in that class, how would you have answered the question? Our Psalmist for today writes: “In you, O Lord, I seek refuge… Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me… Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.” Save me…it’s a recurring request through the book of Psalms.
