On May 31st the Roads and Grounds committee hosted a community meeting in the clubhouse. Those who attended were able to learn about the RSF process, meet and ask questions of our community contractors and resident zone representatives. Although we may take the ponds and basins for granted as we move through our development, we found out that they are an integral part of the ecosystem not only here When you select EP Henry products for your patio, walkway or garden wall, you get more at Greenbriar but the greater Waretown/Barnegat than just attractive pavers, and wall systems. Based on soil samples that will be taken in August, the committee will evaluate the applications planned for the early fall. As the weather gets hotter and potentially drier the lawn mowing schedule may be adjusted to less frequent mowings. Please monitor your sprinkler system coverage to avoid brown patches where your lawn dries out and goes dormant. The lawn mowers are set to cut the grass to a 3 inch height to deter weed growth. It is important the sprinkler heads are set in the ground appropriately to avoid mower damage. Our committee continues to discuss possible ways to beautify our community and would like to hear your suggestions. You may use the RSF not only for concerns but for suggestions. Our Roads and Grounds webpage, underm Committees on the Greenbriar Oceanaire website is updated regularly and has a great deal of information, for homeowners. We encourage you to go there to learn about topics that fall within our committee’s responsibility. Thank you to the Gardenaires for their work at the back gate. The colorful plantings are a welcome sight for residents entering our community!

JULY 2016 • Greenbriar Oceanaire 27 John Bartram Visits the Gardenaires June Tea Written by Judy Sylvester/ Photos by Dennis Lozauskas

June is the month to enjoy beautiful gardens, with blooms at their loveliest. At the Gardenaires tea, held on June 14, 2016 in the ballroom, many tables celebrated the lovely colors of spring and summer flowers while other tables chose patriotic colors in honor of Flag Day or dramatic combinations of beige, gold, black, and white. All 32 tables, each with a hostess, graced the room with color and the fragrance of fresh flowers. Gardenaires members entered the ballroom at 12:30 in order to view the beautiful tables created by the hostesses. Many of the tables featured special china, Raffle gifts are displayed napkins, favors and tea cups, in addition before the tea to centerpieces created especially for each table. Members, many wearing stunning hats and garden party attire, also had time to view the lovely raffle items, many of them donated and/or created by Gardenaires members for the tea. During the tea they were entertained with piano music played by Al Criscufulli, a Greenbriar resident. The menu, prepared by Maggie’s, featured scones, finger sandwiches, and delicious pastries. Of course, there was tea, as well as coffee, soda, lemondade, iced tea and water. Joyce Locascio, program chair, thanks her committee, Jan and Jackie Chaudron, Dee Carnevale, Cathy Nase, and Jane Yuhas who worked so hard to make this event a A Pink theme graces one of the tea tables memorable experience. Hal Sommer, as usual, did an outstanding job with the lights, sound, and audio-visual aspects of the program. The assistance of the staff from the clubhouse and the staff from Maggie’s was greatly appreciated. Prior to the serving of the food, there was a flag salute and a blessing was given by Emily McLaughlin, president of the Gardenaires. A highlight of the tea was the guest speaker, Kirk Brown, who portrayed John Bartram, famous botanist, horticulturist, plant collector, gardener and landscape designer. Brown, a playwright, garden designer, and actor used a PowerPoint program featuring quotes from John Bartram’s writings, and those of his famous friends such as Benjamin Franklin, James Logan, Peter Collinson and Carl Linnaeous. John Bartram, a Quaker, was the father of the nursery industry in the Thirteen Colonies and the creator of Bartram’s Boxes, used to ship his seeds and plant samples to Europe and to many parts of America. WABC had the shortest playlist in contemporary radio. According to Wikipedia, “the number one song was heard about every hour” and … “the other top 5 were heard nearly as often. The station played about 9 current hits per hour…” With our transistor radios glued to our ears, we heard the same songs over and over again. We didn’t care how often we heard the songs…it was “our” music! You might have a favorite, but there was Motown, Doo-Wop, the British Invasion, even silly songs to choose from. There was music to slow dance to and music for fast dances. And dance we did! We had the Stroll, the Twist, Mashed Potatoes, Monkey, Dog, Pony, Hitch Hike, Watusi, Bristol Stomp, the Skate, and many more. The Baby Boomers were never afraid to throw themselves into the music and have fun. I freely admit I know nothing about today’s popular music. When I try to listen to some of the songs, I findI can’t understand the words! (No, there is nothing wrong with my hearing). That’s probably a good thing, since the language of some lyrics would make a grandmother like me blush. Also, is Rap really music? Obviously, I am definitely an old fogey, “out of it.”I ’m sure there is still wonderful music being written and performed, but 42 Greenbriar Oceanaire • JULY 2016 Culinary Corner It’s the 4th of July, “ Time for a Red, White and Blue Celebration” So, …”Let’s get this party started”, with fireworks, firecrackers, great friends, family and great food.
