National Capital Art Glass Guild Presents United We Stand Art Unmasked At the Craft Gallery Annandale, Virginia May and June, 2021 Scan the barcode to go to gallery webpage Michaela Borghese BIO: Michaela is well known for her life long passion for baking cakes and 18 years ago she started exploring another kind of baking, kilnformed glass, and this has become an additional passion. When not working in the studio or in her kitchen, Michaela loves traveling and photography. Many of these captured memories become forever "framed" in her glass art. Besides many classes at the Art Glass Center, Michaela has studied with nationally and internationally known glass artists locally and abroad. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in the Washington DC area. She became a Studio Artist at the AGC in Glen Echo in 2006. Item 1: The Rose Size: 6”x4.5”x7” $525 tempered glass casted in a plaster mold. Item 2: Bird with a Heart Size: 6”x6.5”x5.5” $275 paper mache bird covered with apoxie sculpt, then glued glass beads and pieces of glass into it. Artist Statement: Nature plays a big part in my life, so I always like to incorporate it into my art work. What still fascinates me about kilnformed glass, is that even with the most careful design, you never know exactly how a piece will turn out - when you open the kiln, you can always expect surprises. Beryl Brenner BIO: Beryl Brenner obtained her BA in fine arts and her MA in art-ed. from Brooklyn College.

  • Media Release 2019
MEDIA RELEASE Detail: Installation of The Pursuit of Pattern at The David Roche Foundation, Adelaide. NEW EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE DAVID ROCHE FOUNDATION INCLUDING A PIECE WHICH FURNISHED MADONNA’S SUITE AT THE RITZ CARLTON Adelaide. The David Roche Foundation, has opened a new exhibition The Pursuit of Pattern which showcases more than 50 rare and exquisite works of art, most of which have not been previously seen, that explore the fashion for inlaid surface patterns on furniture, objets d’art and jewellery. Each item highlights the superb workmanship that was achieved through materials and techniques mastered in the 18th and 19th centuries which are now largely lost. Focusing on the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries, the exhibition reflects the craze for the ‘antique’ and the development of the neoclassical style in Britain and Europe through surface pattern. Study of the Roman ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 1750’s changed the future of British design when a young architect, Robert Adam, brought back with him in 1758 drawings of plants, flowers, earthenware and decorative emblems copied from the painted and mosaic floors and walls of these buried cities. Using this source material, Adam established himself as Britain’s most celebrated neoclassic architect and worked alongside the most famous furniture designer and cabinetmaker of the period, Thomas Chippendale. Martyn Cook, Museum Director says “Through a generous interstate loan The Pursuit of Pattern brings together a group of exquisite marquetry furniture by William Ince & John Mayhew, William Moore, John Folgham and John Cobb, contemporaries of Chippendale, who all worked in the neoclassic style.

  • Gilbertgalleriespress Release
New Galleries for the Gilbert Collection open at the V&A Opens 30 June 2009 The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Galleries will open at the V&A on 30 June with highlights from the Gilbert Collection, one of the most important collections ever given to Britain. The new galleries reflect Sir Arthur Gilbert’s passion for craftsmanship of the highest quality and a fascination with collecting works related to important historical figures including Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great and Napoleon. Over 500 objects will be on show in newly designed galleries, adjacent to the V&A’s silver collections and overlooking the John Madejski Garden. Previously shown at Somerset House in chronological displays, the Collection will now be presented in four galleries each focussing on a broad category of European decorative arts – gold and silver, gold boxes, Italian mosaics and enamelled portrait miniatures. The first gallery will focus on 16th and 17th-century silver and present pieces made as domestic wares as well as impressive ornamental objects for display. A highlight is a pair of silver-gilt rimmonim , a generous gift to the V&A by Marjorie, Lady Gilbert through the American Friends of The Art Fund, shown together with a Torah crown. The second will show 18th and 19th-century silver, including a pair of monumental silver and gilt gates from a Russian Orthodox monastic church in Kiev, thought to have been commissioned by Catherine the Great. It will also display portrait miniatures by some of the most important artists working in the medium and depicting prominent historical figures such as George Washington, The Duchess of Devonshire and Oliver Cromwell.

Sold, together riding an airborne bat, holding two peacock with other lava jewellery, Bonhams Oxford, feathers, in gold mount with rope twist. Sold June 2007, £520. Carved shell brooch. Sold Bonhams Oxford, Bonhams Oxford, June 2007, £1,150. June 2007, £300. Jewellery Series Part I. Cameos by Zita Thornton Souvenirs bought by tourists visiting Rome, most likely on one of the new ‘Cook’s Tours’ in the nineteenth century, inspired the Victorian fashion for cameo jewellery. Following in the footsteps of earlier aristocratic travellers doing the ‘Grand Tour’, the new wealthy middle classes sought cultural enrichment by visiting the ancient sites in Rome and Pompeii. These tourists were not quite wealthy enough to commission a Neo-Classical sculpture or bust so craftsmen satisfied their appetite for classical art by reviving the ancient tradition widely used in Rome and Greece of carving cameos. Ancient cameos were, and still are, highly prized. Their ancient images portrayed important social customs, events and figures. Wearing a cameo was a means of showing loyalty and they were worn by men as well as women. In 2004 Sotheby’s sold an important Roman cameo, from the first or second century for £78,000. The form of a horse had been carved in sardonyx and set in a Murghal jade button in the seventeenth century. The Murghals greatly appreciated cameos. They were presented to princes and emperors. Their popularity only lessened with the decline of the Murghal court itself.
