For Palo Alto Festival Artists - Announcing New Sales Process

For Festival Artists - Announcing New Sales Process at ACGA Palo Alto Festival! Dear Exhibitors,

We have been saying for the last two years that the credit card service is going away, and 2016 was finally the last year. Please bring your own device to run credit card sales through Square, Shopify, or another app. There is wifi inside the PAAC and cell service outside (although coverage may be spotty). Be friendly with your booth neighbors in case one of you needs help with a new app. Consider helping out with a hotspot if you have one.

Since we aren't running a central credit card service, we don't need those pesky 4-part sales slips anymore! I have adapted the sales report sheet used by the King's Mountain Art Fair for ACGA's needs (with Board review and approval). It is a 2-part carbonless form with lines for recording about 20 customers' sales on one sheet. To go along with the new Sales Sheet, we will have a 2-part carbonless Mailing List sheet - I suggest you bring a clipboard so you can hand this to your customers to fill out while you are writing up and wrapping their purchase. Download Mailing List sheet here. If you would like to give your customer a receipt, please bring your own receipt book for that purpose.

Here's an quick example of what the sales writeup will look like:

Item descriptions & prices subtotal sales tax Total w/tax 1 plate @ $40.00, 1 vase @ $50.00, 2 mugs @ $120.00 $10.80 $130.80 $30.00

At the bottom of the Sales Sheet (download the pdf here) there is a space for calculating total sales and the 15% commission payable at Checkout on Sunday. That means you don't need a separate tally sheet. Simply use as many Sales Sheets as you need during the weekend, and calculate the Grand Total and 15% on the last sheet. You will turn in your Sales Sheets and Mailing List sheets at Checkout. ACGA will keep the top copies and you get the 2nd copies, which should be legible, for a change!

Sample sheets and sales instructions will be emailed to you in June by Giant Creative, along with your booth assignment and volunteer job information. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you, April Zilber, ACGA Treasurer [email protected]

Bill Geisinger is in the window at SMAart gallery through June 30, 2017. "An important part of my work is simplicity, and how nature combines color and texture. My work examines the idea that a common functional ceramic form is also a piece of ceramic sculpture. The results are a wonderful combination of the process of making and the materials it comes from. June 2017 Newsletter

In May, CGAF gave scholarships to five recipients attending the California Conference on the Advancement of the Ceramic Arts, (CCACA) at Davis. All reported having a rewarding and stimulating experience. Here is what Mitra Mostofi had to say upon returning: "The experience was unbelievable. I was presented with extraordinary information and inspirations at the event. Seeing the fellow classmates work and dedication for this event increased the comradery within our group. I no longer feel like I am going to a class and seeing my classmates but I feel like I am going to my other family at my second home. I believe this feeling is mutual among all of us who have attended the event." This month's pictures are of Beth Gaylord (r) and of Andrew Masek (l) at the conference. Beth attends Sierra College and Andrew attends De Anza.

In July, we will have a booth at ACGA's annual Clay and Glass festival. Please stop by, talk to our board members, pick up our brochures and purchase a donated item. All proceeds from the sale go to support our programs of grants, scholarships and workshops in the ceramic and glass arts. We look forward to sharing additional pictures from our scholarship recipients in future months.

If you are a California resident and would like to participate in a workshop or conference that involves the clay and glass arts, you may apply for CGAF scholarship assistance. To do so, go to our website: www.clayandglassarts.org where you will find our scholarship application.

Bullseye Material Language - through August 5, 2017 Bullseye Resource Center Bay Area is pleased to present Material Language, a group exhibition that explores the textural language of kiln-glass. Through casting and kilnforming, glass can take on a myriad of forms that go well beyond the smooth, glossy surfaces we interact with every day. The artists included in Material Language combine fine glass powder, course frit, sheet glass, and billet with heat to create sculptural works that are reminiscent of folded paper, geologic formations, cracked concrete, and the markings of animals. Joseph Harrington, Pacific Mist, 2013. Cast glass, lost ice process, 7.5" x 24.75" Nisha Bansil is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer whose x 4.25" glass work - cast from folded paper - is based on the observation of the environment. Joseph Harrington, similarly, draws from the landscape using a unique process called "lost ice." Nathan Sandberg looks to the markings and imperfections found around the city. Subtle textures in concrete or at transit stations delineate movement and reveal histories of use. Amanda Simmons uses glass powders to generate patterns drawn from the plumage of birds for her series of shallow vessel forms. 4514 Hollis St. Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday Noon-5pm 510.595.1318 [email protected] www.bullseyeglass.com/bayarea

LOS ANGELES

CRAFT IN AMERICA Kazuki Takizawa: Catharsis Contained through July 8, 2017

"The harmonization of the radically different, such as, violence and meditation, spontaneity and meticulousness, and destruction and repair is found in the process, as well as the result of my work." Los Angeles artist Kazuki Takizawa elucidates human emotions in the shimmering, fragile form of glass. Passion, turmoil, self-expression and mental health are driving forces behind Takizawa's articulate approach to sculpture. Takizawa uses blown and shaped glass to shed light on the darkness that can overwhelm those who face depression, disorder and mental illness in their lives. His powerful bulbous shapes and vessels encapsulate these taboo topics and provide a personal catharsis to the artist. This exhibition will feature a body of work that explores the nature and ancient history of the container, in this case, reinvented as a psychological metaphor. Craft in America Center 8415 W. At Home with Arts and Crafts

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in England in the 1880s. In response to the Industrial Revolution and mass-produced, machine-made objects, the movement emphasized a return to hand craftsmanship. Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin (1819-1900), who exalted the medieval craft guild system, artist and designer William Morris (1834-96) served as the movement's spearhead. Arts and Crafts advocates rejected the ornate designs and compositions of Victorian-era interiors. Instead, they encouraged quality materials and construction with simple forms and motifs derived from nature. Social Saturday Night Girls reform was integral to the movement. In contrast to the dreary factory conditions of the day, proponents believed that artisans should work in pleasant environments with fair pay. The Arts and Crafts movement soon spread to the United States. Boston founded the first Society of Arts and Crafts in 1897. Unlike their British counterparts, many entrepreneurial American makers considered machines timesaving tools, which aided in producing well-made goods at affordable prices. Leading proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States, Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) batch-produced unadorned, carefully constructed, oak furniture in Syracuse, New York. His company also offered textiles and metalwork. In 1901, Stickley launched The Craftsman periodical, which promoted Arts and Crafts nationwide. Another pivotal American figure, Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), founded Roycroft in East Aurora, New York. The Roycroft community produced some of the finest furnishings and metalwork of the era. Craftsman bungalows, which appeared across the nation in the first decade of the twentieth century, were the perfect abodes to encompass the style. For the first time, many women took leading roles as designers and decorators in workshops created specifically to train and employ females. Newcomb was formed in 1895 in New Orleans as part of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, an educational institution for women. Female artisans in the pottery department decorated ceramics with natural imagery drawn from the South. In Boston, the Saturday Evening Girls Club, founded in 1899 as a reading group for immigrant girls, led to the establishment of Paul Revere Pottery in 1908.

12 of 19 California quickly embraced and created its own regional variations of Arts and Crafts. A number of leading artisans called the state home; many of them lived and worked in San Francisco. Dirk van Erp (1862-1933), considered the finest coppersmith of the Arts and Crafts era, crafted table lamps with hand-hammered copper bases accented by mica shades, which produced a warm, amber glow when lit. Harry St. John Dixon (1890-1967) trained under van Erp and later worked for Lillian Palmer (1871-1961), who lent a considerably feminine air to Bay Area copper. Arts and Crafts reached its apex from the 1890s to the outbreak of World War I, though the style continued to appear into the 1920s and '30s. This exhibition features a rich assortment of Arts and Crafts furnishings, from Gustav Stickley textiles to Dirk van Erp copper, and art pottery by makers such as Rookwood and Paul Revere Pottery. - See more at: https://www.flysfo.com/museum/exhibitions/home-arts-and-crafts#sthash.syYNUIHz.dpuf

Need a New Website? Do you need a new or updated website? If you haven't thought about your website in a few years, chances are that you do. Things on the web are always changing, and it's important to make sure your website is keeping up. Not just for the sake of keeping up, but for real reasons that can affect your sales and people's ability to find you online. For example, is your website mobile friendly ? Look at it on a cell phone and see how it's looking and check navigation. If it's not mobile friendly, search engines like Google will not see your site as relevant, and down you go in the rankings. This makes it more difficult for people to find you, as well as making it laborious for people to browse your website from their phones and pads. According to the latest research, mobile digital media time in the US is now significantly higher at 51% compared to desktop at 42%.

Updating the new ACGA website was a big task and could not have been accomplished without the help of Ken Metheny, otherwise known as the nicest and most patient man in the world. Working with Ken was easy, and he tutored me on our new website platform, WordPress. WordPress is a pretty powerful platform and stays updated with current changes, so it's a good way to go if you are trying to reach new customers and keep an updated website that does not need to be totally re-designed every few years. Ken is offering a free, no- obligation consultation to ACGA members to talk about their websites, and analyze whether or not a new or updated website is a good idea for you. He has become very familiar with our ACGA community and our particular needs as artists, so he knows that we need websites we can update ourselves with our latest work, keep our event dates current, and have creative control over without having to email a developer for every little update!

If you decide to hire Ken, 10% of the revenue goes back to the ACGA in the form of web support, so you can feel good that your money is circulating in our association.

Interested? Please check out what Ken has to offer here on the ACGA Blog. http://acgaweb.com/acga-blog/interested-in-website-help-or-a-web-make-over/
