Creating Unity in Community: How PVD performers create connection in virtual space and what they’ll take with them into physical space When I sat down (virtually), with three Rhode Island musicians, I had no idea their takeaways from navigating pandemic life would overlap as much as they did. For all three, Dylan Block-Harley, Chachi Carvalho and Roz Raskin, what’s most important is creating art and community in Rhode Island and beyond. This three-article series explores how having to pivot to engage with virtual programming has impacted and inspired them. The first interview in this series is with Dylan Block-Harley (MisSter Dylan), a dedicated creator and long-time Providence musician who comes from a family of performers and storytellers. When I asked him about performing in virtual spaces, he talked about a show he did with his dad Bill Harley (hands down his number one influence) and his brother Noah Block-Harley (of the Horse-eyed Men), which was livestreamed from the Columbus Theatre. Mayté Antelo-Ovando: What has the experience of performing virtually been like? Dylan Block-Harley: From talking to [my dad] it seems like the big challenge is changing your mindset from performing to an audience that’s a living creature — in the room with you, [to being] online, [where] that is removed. I think it can feel like a vacuum. The job is to switch the mentality to more of a TV sort of mindset. That’s what my dad said, “The person you’re performing to is right there.” So it’s this direct like, “Hi! How are you? You know, how are YOU doing?” Which, if you think about it, is actually a really powerful, totally different opportunity and way to connect with people. -

Issue Eight July 2019 Angel City Review Foreward
Issue Eight July 2019 Angel City Review Foreward Looking through these pages I am proud to see the work of all these amazing writers. It is humbling see all these who trusted us with their work to allow us to share these pieces with the world. There is so much beauty, and strength in the work being presented here from writers across the gamut. There is no singular perspective and yet they all create a cohesive whole as to the portrait of the human experience. I am also humbled by the amazing work that the editors have done with this magazine. They have all put in tireless hours working to mold their respective sections into their vision and to present our readers with work that excited and amazed them. I recall our new poetry editor Janice Sapigao telling me how much joy reading the submissions were – how many great writers were submitting. It is that level of passion that we all take in our own work and the same level of passion we want to put into sharing it with all of you. We hope you take as much joy in reading this as we had putting it together. - Zachary Jensen Angel City Review Issue 8 2019 Zachary Jensen: Managing Editor Janice Sapigao: Poetry Editor Kristin Kaz: Prose Editor John Venegas: Lead Editor/Book Review Editor Cover Photo and Art: E Villa E Villa is a Mexican Artist and Educator living in Los Angeles California. 1 Amazing Grace
1Amazing Grace BY JOHN NEWTON 1. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I’m free. 2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fear relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares We have already come; 'Twas grace that brought us safe thus far, And grace will lead us on. 4. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we’d first begun. 5. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I'm free. 2Just aCloser Walk With Thee TRADITIONAL 1. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea; Daily walking close with Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. 2. Through the days of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. 3. When my feeble life is o'er Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely on To thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore. 4. I am weak, but Thou art strong. Jesus, keep me from all wrong. I'll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee. -

Classic Rock in the Year of Revolt: Using the Illusion of Life to Examine the Hits of 1968
IAFOR Journal of Arts & Humanities Volume 5 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2018 Classic Rock in the Year of Revolt: Using the Illusion of Life to Examine the Hits of 1968 Thomas G. Endres, University of Northern Colorado, USA Keynote Presentation at the European Conference on Media, Communication & Film 2018 July 9, 2018 Unabridged version Abstract This is not the first generation facing a fearful future. Exactly fifty years ago, 1968 – nestled between the Summer of Love (’67) and Woodstock (’69) - was known as the year of revolt. From Vietnam protests and Civil Rights marches, to the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, American culture, like that of countries around the world, was awash in struggle yet alive in activist ideology. In particular, Classic Rock of the era served as a reflection of the times, a call to action, and eventually offered enduring insight into the qualities of effective protest music. Using Sellnow’s Illusion of Life methodology, which examines music as rhetoric, this essay analyses the top ten hits of that year (per http://ultimateclassicrock.com), including such timeless masterpieces as Joplin’s “Piece of my Heart,” Cream’s “White Room,” Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower,” and the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” The humanistic methodology begins by identifying first the patterns found in the songs’ virtual time (music) and virtual experience (lyrics). Analysis then delves into the use of strategies such as congruity and incongruity to get across meaning. Interpretations are offered on the impact such works had on their original generation, and concludes with applications for today. -

Listening for the Depths of Winter: And a hot debate enters the House floor Austin Bullock — Don’t Wake Me Up At the end of 2020, Providence-based multi-instrumentalist Austin Bullock dropped Don’t Wake Me Up, a satisfying collection of eight songs with wide-ranging influences. A prolific writer, Bullock put out three albums in 2020, all following the theme of “8 hours labor, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest” according to his Bandcamp page. Though it was hard to decipher any kind of throughline, all the songs feature smart arranging and superb guitar playing. He mixes a lot into the stew here, and all the parts are well fleshed out. “Circus Freak” has a kind of dancy Franz Ferdinand vibe, and “How Could You” is a breezy folk tune. Some of the songs off Don’t Wake Me Up make that warbly, Mac Demarco guitar tone the star of the show, like the heavy groover “Deflated.” The leadoff “(I Don’t Want) Another” has the sunny, laid-back tones of Ryland Baxter. The interlocked guitars in “Evaporate” are straight-up Strokes. The best moment comes when Bullock moves away from the modern indie influences completely in the bluesy, psych-infused ”Talk the Talk.” The song’s repetitive, hypnotic riff is something my brain hasn’t been able to shake. There is a homespun basement vibe — Bullock appears to play all the instruments — that is definitely cool, but these songs would really rip with a full band. The act performs as a duo with Lauren Boucher on drums, and hopefully will be playing live at a venue near you soon. -
