Nishioka, Sugita, Daniel Take to Centre Court Tuesday RAKUTEN JAPAN OPEN: DAY 2 MEDIA NOTES Tuesday, October 4, 2016 Ariake Tennis Forest Park, Tokyo, Japan | October 3-9, 2016 Draw: S-32, D-16 | Prize Money: $1,368,605 | Surface: Outdoor Hard ATP World Tour Info Tournament Info ATP PR & Marketing www.ATPWorldTour.com www.RakutenOpen.com Richard Evans: [email protected] Twitter: @ATPWorldTour Twitter: @RakutenOpen Karina Duckitt: [email protected] Facebook: @ATPWorldTour Facebook: @RakutenJapanOpen Press Room: +81 3-3529-4959 NISHIOKA, SUGITA, DANIEL TAKE TO CENTRE COURT TUESDAY DAY 2 PREVIEW: With four players in the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings, there is more to Japanese tennis than Kei Nishikori. After defeating Donald Young on Monday, the two-time Tokyo champion cedes the Centre Court spotlight Tuesday to countrymen Yoshihito Nishioka, Yuichi Sugita and Taro Daniel. All three wild cards achieved career-high rankings earlier this season, then teamed with Nishikori to sweep Ukraine 5-0 in a Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie September 16-18. The Japanese squad lost only one set during the tie, with Nishioka and Daniel each earning two singles victories and Nishikori and Sugita winning the doubles rubber. In Tuesday’s first match, Nishioka seeks the biggest win of his career versus 14th-ranked David Goffin. The Belgian is 7-7 since letting a two-set lead slip away against eventual finalist Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon fourth round. Like Nishioka, Sugita will play for his greatest victory by ranking against No. 2 seed and World No. 8 Gael Monfils. Then, Daniel takes on resurgent Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, who reached the Shenzhen semi- finals last week. The American-born Daniel is 17-4 in tour-level and Challenger matches since the start of the Rio Olympics, where he beat Jack Sock and Kyle Edmund before losing a three-setter to Juan Martin del Potro in the third round. Nishioka, Sugita and Daniel are a combined 0-6 in Rakuten Japan Open main draw matches. Also on Centre Court, No. 6 seed Nick Kyrgios meets Ryan Harrison, who qualified for his eighth tour-level event of the season in Tokyo. Mischa Zverev has also qualified eight times in 2016, while Radek Stepanek leads all players after qualifying for his ninth tour-level event in Tokyo. Nine is an Open Era record shared by seven players overall, including Stepanek in 2002. The 37-year-old Czech meets 36-year-old Stephane Robert on Court 4, the same court where 37-year-old Ivo Karlovic faces Federico Delbonis. Youth will also be served on Court 4 when 18-year-old Taylor Fritz takes on Juan Monaco. Fritz, who turns 19 on October 28, is the youngest player in the Top 100 and one of seven American teenagers in the Top 300 -- most of any country. • Defending Champion Mahut Plays Double-Header

Mahut begins his busy day at 11 am against countryman Paul Henri-Mathieu. The Frenchmen were born nine days apart in 1982 and live in Boulogne-Billancourt. But despite their proximity in age and residence, Mahut and Mathieu have only met twice on the ATP World Tour. The older Mathieu leads 2-0 in their FedEx ATP Head 2 Head rivalry. Mahut is enjoying a milestone week in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The two-time champion began his title defense with a win over qualifier Lukas Lacko on Monday, the same day that he became the second World No. 1 from France in doubles or singles. Mahut joined Hall-of-Famer Yannick Noah, who spent 19 weeks atop the Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Because his regular partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert is playing singles in Stuttgart this week, Mahut is teaming with World No. 10 Rohan Bopanna for the first time. They make their debut Wednesday in the third match on Court 1.
