DEFENDING CHAMPION MAHUT PLAYS DOUBLE-HEADER

 DAY 3 PREVIEW: Reigning singles champion and World No. 1 doubles player plays a pair of matches on Court 1 at the Ricoh Open on Wednesday. Mahut begins his busy day at 11 am against countryman Paul Henri-Mathieu. The Frenchmen were born nine days apart in 1982 and live in Boulogne-Billancourt. But despite their proximity in age and residence, Mahut and Mathieu have only met twice on the ATP World Tour. The older Mathieu leads 2-0 in their FedEx ATP 2 Head rivalry.

Mahut is enjoying a milestone week in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The two-time champion began his title defense with a win over qualifier Lukas Lacko on Monday, the same day that he became the second World No. 1 from in doubles or singles. Mahut joined Hall-of-Famer , who spent 19 weeks atop the Emirates ATP Doubles during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Because his regular partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert is playing singles in this week, Mahut is teaming with World No. 10 for the first time. They make their debut Wednesday in the third match on Court 1.

On Centre Court, No. 2 seed meets Aljaz Bedene not before 12:30 pm. Tomic’s breakthrough came on the grass courts of Wimbledon in 2011. Ranked 158th at the time, the 18-year-old Tomic qualified and upset No. 5 Robin Soderling before falling to eventual champion in a four-set quarter-final. The last match pits Americans and , who on Monday earned his career-high of No. 196 and first ATP win over qualifier .
