Among the Most Competitive Airports in the Baltic Sea Region

In 2016, Riga Airport adopted a decision on the medium-term tariff policy, maintaining low, simple and com- petitive airfares over a longer period of time. Thanks to this policy, Riga Airport is among the most competi- tive airports in the Baltic Sea Region.

Riga Airport sets its tariffs applying the so-called “single cash” principle, according to which Airport’s expen- diture is covered from both aviation and non-aviation service revenue, which affects the fees that are applied to airlines and passengers.

The analysis of the total aviation revenue per passenger shows that the revenue of Riga Airport (per passen- ger) is among the lowest in the Baltic Sea Region. It only exceeds the revenue figures of Lithuanian airports, A New Passenger Record which service low-cost airlines.

Riga International Airport has demonstrated its leading position in the Baltic Region, handling nearly half of the total number of passengers of the Baltic airports in 2016. The Airport also managed to reach a new pas- senger record of 5.4 million passengers, which is almost five percent more than in the previous year. London, 3500 Moscow, Oslo, Frankfurt and Helsinki are still the most popular destinations for passengers travelling from Riga Airport. 3000

Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme

Riga International Airport has received Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) certification for meeting Level 1 requirements for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. With this certification, Riga Airport joined those airports that take active steps to reduce such emissions.

ACA is a programme established by Airports Council International (ACI) and administered by WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff that aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by airports. Airport Carbon Accre- ditation programme involves 180 airports, of which 104 are located in Europe.

ACA is the only officially recognised carbon management certification standard that applies to airports. This is an important tool for airports in their carbon footprint management, reduction and neutralisation. The cer- tificate is valid until 2 December 2017.

Limiting Pollution of Local Waters

On the right bank of the Airport’s drainage ditch, in the site, from which oil products flow into surface water, another 15-metre long containment boom has been set up, creating a “pool” for accumulation of pollution. This boom holds back the largest part of pollution; therefore, the “pool” should be cleaned on a regular basis. Behind the dam, there are two pollution collection pockets from containment booms; inside of these pockets, there are absorbing booms for absorption and collection of oil products.

Inter-institutional Working Group for Aircraft Noise Airport Purchases Electric Baggage-Towing Tractors Management Taking care of the environment and health of its employees, in 2016, Riga Airport purchased four new electric baggage-towing tractors. They replace baggage-towing tractors with diesel engines. The Airport itself ensures management of noise generated by aircraft serviced at Riga Airport; therefore, for the noise management to be effective, regular co-operation between the involved parties is of key importance. Electric baggage-towing tractors are used to transport passengers’ baggage from the terminal to the aircraft, and vice versa. One baggage-towing tractor carries an average of more than 500 pieces of baggage every For this purpose, in July 2016 Riga Airport Environmental Noise Management Working Group was estab- day; now there are 12 electric baggage-towing tractors in the Airport’s fleet. lished.
