Opened in 1930, it was the largest architectural project in interwar Latvia, an imposing construction of 5 large Art Nouveau buildings in the center of Riga. Even today it functions as a market, being the place where traditionally the inhabitants of the capital are directed to acquire the products of daily consumption, and where farmers from all over the country sell their different merchandise: vegetables, fruits and berries, charcuterie, meat and fish; cheeses and various dairy products. Riga could be easily called the northern form of Art Nouveau if you compare it to the buildings of Gaudi in Barcelona. It occupies the site of an ancient pagan temple to the God Perkūnas and originally lay within the fortification system of the Lower Castle. In the narrow old streets, one will see numerous pieces of historical heritage, like St. Anne's Church, University complex of buildings, Church of St Peter and Paul, the Gates of Dawn. Afternoon visit to Trakai, the ancient Lithuanian capital, located about 25 Kms south of Vilnius, declared a national park, both for the natural beauty of its lakes and forests, and for the historical importance of the place. The imposing castle is a magnificent construction that dates back to the thirteenth century, located on a small island in the center of an idyllic lake, whose waters reflect the silhouette of its high red brick walls and its slender towers.
