About the Author

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (1922-2007) is one of the most beloved American writers of the twentieth century. He wrote dozens of novels in the course of his career - which spanned more than fifty years - including Cat’s Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Mother Night, and is best known for his canonic 1968 novel, Slaughterhouse Five, drawn from his experience as a prisoner of war during World War II.

Vonnegut began his career as a science fiction writer, and his early novels - including his second, The Sirens of Titan - were categorized as such, even as they appealed to an audience far beyond the reach of the genre. Throughout his body of work, he infused sharp satirical insight, anger, and humor that remain timeless and relevant today.

Director's Note

Everyone has that artist or writer or band or poet or whatever who, upon encountering their work for the first time, changed their life - a connection that went beyond entertainment or stimulation, but was more like a message beamed directly into the brain and the message says this:

You are not alone.

For me, that artist is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. From the moment I picked up Slaughterhouse-Five completely at random when I was eighteen, I was sucked into Vonnegut’s counter-cultural worlds through his wisdom, humor, and sarcasm and while I was there his humanistic ideas resonated like nothing I’d ever encountered. He was the first author to bring me to tears, and the book that did that was THE SIRENS OF TITAN.

Around that time I was working at the now-defunct Theatre Downtown in Orlando, and Frank Hilgenberg, the man who founded it, had told me stories of his starting out at the Organic Theatre in and the mad genius behind that place - Stuart Gordon. I already knew Gordon’s film work (notably as a raving Re-Animator fanboy), but when Frank saw me reading Vonnegut’s Hocus-Pocus, he said, “we did an adaptation of of THE SIRENS OF TITAN at the Organic you know! Vonnegut himself helped out with it.” I filed that information away.

Three years ago when I had the opportunity to work with Stuart on Taste, I asked him about the adaptation of Sirens. He didn’t have a copy of the script, but he pointed me in the direction of an archive in Chicago, which led to another, and after several months I was able to read his manuscript. And there it was, the same madcap sci-fi thing that had so moved me as a teenager. That same call for human decency. The same tears of unrealizable hope at the end.

I hope it moves you as well.

This production would never have happened without several people. I especially want to thank Bradley Yanover at Kurt Vonnegut, LLC for making it possible, Alicia Conway Rock for fighting for and facilitating it, Shaela Cook for producing all of it and for being such a brilliant collaborator, the artistic directors at Sacred Fools and Stuart for allowing me to direct his work. They say you should never meet your heroes, and Stuart is proof to the contrary. --Ben Rock

Invitation to an Adaptation by Stuart Gordon

Forty years ago I was lucky enough to work with Kurt Vonnegut Jr. adapting his brilliant spaced-out odyssey, THE SIRENS OF TITAN, for the stage. I was the Artistic Director of Chicago’s Organic Theater and Vonnegut granted us stage rights to his book on the condition that he would be able to approve the finished script. How could anyone say no to that?

Kurt showed up to watch an early run-through and told me afterward, with his trademark twinkle in his eye, that I should pretend he’d been dead for ten years. He felt our adaptation was much too literal (and literary). “I wrote a book,” he said, “and you’re producing a play.” He encouraged us not to be “so damned faithful” as he began ruthlessly hacking and hewing to create a lively theatrical experience that could be appreciated by an audience in under two hours.

Unfortunately I no longer need to pretend that he’s gone. He will have left us exactly ten years ago this April. Returning to SIRENS, I’ve been amazed that it feels just as fresh, funny and innovative as it did back then. Its theme of being used by others for goals that are murky at best seems to be very much of our times. In fact, we are now following the bizarre exploits of a POTUS who could be a character dreamt up by Mr. Vonnegut himself.

I must give thanks to Ben Rock. Upon hearing of the existence of our adaptation, he tracked it down and he and Alicia Conway, his brilliant partner in crime, contacted the Vonnegut estate who granted them the rights to produce the play. And special thanks to the Sacred Fools Board and staff for taking on this complex project and allowing their stage to be transformed into distant planets and moons.

When I watch the new production, my memories buzz like acid flashbacks and I see and hear the original Organic Company members: , and . Joe and Dennis would go on to become famous television cops on and NYPD Blue, while Meshach would play the only recurring male role on Designing Women.

The company also included my fearless wife Carolyn, as Beatrice Rumfoord and Sacred Fools alum Ian Patrick Williams, terrific as Malachi Constant. Keith Szarabajka made an unforgettable Kazak, Rumfoord’s imposing canine companion and Michael Saad brilliantly played half a dozen crazed characters. Roberta Custer was wonderful as young Chrono and Richard Fire astonishing as the stranded alien robot Salo. Sadly Meshach, Roberta and Richard are no longer with us and I like to think they’re a trio of space wanderers happily touring our Solar System without need of fishbowl helmets. I’m hoping that I can catch up with them some day.

So buckle your seat belts and prepare for lift-off. You are about to experience an inter- planetary journey that will actually reveal the secret meaning of life.

THANKS TO ALL OUR GRACIOUS DONORS!
