He wrote dozens of novels in the course of his career - which spanned more than fifty years - including Cat’s Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Mother Night, and is best known for his canonic 1968 novel, Slaughterhouse Five, drawn from his experience as a prisoner of war during World War II. Vonnegut began his career as a science fiction writer, and his early novels - including his second, The Sirens of Titan - were categorized as such, even as they appealed to an audience far beyond the reach of the genre. Throughout his body of work, he infused sharp satirical insight, anger, and humor that remain timeless and relevant today. Director's Note Everyone has that artist or writer or band or poet or whatever who, upon encountering their work for the first time, changed their life - a connection that went beyond entertainment or stimulation, but was more like a message beamed directly into the brain and the message says this: You are not alone. For me, that artist is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. From the moment I picked up Slaughterhouse-Five completely at random when I was eighteen, I was sucked into Vonnegut’s counter-cultural worlds through his wisdom, humor, and sarcasm and while I was there his humanistic ideas resonated like nothing I’d ever encountered. He was the first author to bring me to tears, and the book that did that was THE SIRENS OF TITAN. Around that time I was working at the now-defunct Theatre Downtown in Orlando, and Frank Hilgenberg, the man who founded it, had told me stories of his starting out at the Organic Theatre in Chicago and the mad genius behind that place - Stuart Gordon. I already knew Gordon’s film work (notably as a raving Re-Animator fanboy), but when Frank saw me reading Vonnegut’s Hocus-Pocus, he said, “we did an adaptation of of THE SIRENS OF TITAN at the Organic you know! Vonnegut himself helped out with it.” I filed that information away. Three years
