  • MEDAMI2020 Venue and Travel Information
MEDAMI2020 venue and travel information The town of Portorož (= the harbor of roses) (Slovenia) adjacent to Piran, one of the most picturesque small towns along the Adriatic coast, has first become known as a health and cure location under the K.U.K. monarchy in the 19th century benefiting from its natural healing factors as offered by the Adriatic sea, the clear air and the neighboring salines of Sečovlje. More recently, Portorož has developed into a city of science and education with a number of facilities located directly in town or nearby, such as the Faculty of Maritime studies and transport of the University of Ljubljana. Piran, just adjacent to Portorož, hosts the National Institute of Biology, and a Marine Biology Station. In Koper, 15 km from Portorož, there is a center of the University of Primorska, which also has a faculty in Portorož. In Izola, just 7 km from the Conference location, one can find the faculty of Health Sciences of this university with an affiliated hospital, covering the whole Slovenian Adriatic region. As a result of this concentration of academic institutions Portorož became a preferred place for scientific conferences, workshops, meetings and summer schools. Most recently, the following conferences have been or will be held here: • ANIMMA 2019, International Conference on Advancements in Nuclear Instrumentation Measurement Methods and their Applications, June 17-21, 2019 • 28th International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe, NENE2019, Sept., 9 - 12, 2019 • 27th International Conference on Materials and Technology (ICM&T), Oct. 16 – 18, 2019 • TBMCE 2019 International Conference on Technologies and Business Models for Circular Economy, Oct.

  • Croatia Maritime Border Dispute
UNDER THE ISTRIAN SUN: NAVIGATING INTERNATIONAL LAW SOLUTIONS FOR THE SLOVENIA- CROATIA MARITIME BORDER DISPUTE CHRISTOPHER M. HARTLEY* ABSTRACT Twenty-eight years after Slovenia and Croatia exited the Federation of Yugoslavia on the eve of its bloody civil war, the two countries are still plagued by a maritime border dispute in the northern Adriatic Sea.1 Given that the countries were not in conflict with each other during the war, and given their similar goals for integration into the greater European and international communities, it is perplexing that they have not been able to resolve this dispute. The Bay of Piran (or, Piran Bay), located in the narrow Gulf of Trieste at the land border of the two countries and having a unique, heavily indented geography, is ground zero of this dispute.2 The pivotal issues are sovereign control of the bay itself and access for Slovenian vessels to international waters, a concept that is foreclosed under traditional law of the sea maritime border principles given the constraints of the bay and Slovenia’s miniscule coastline.3 *Assistant Professor, Department of Law, United States Military Academy, West Point. The author is an active duty Army Judge Advocate. The author was a United States military liaison to the Republic of Slovenia’s Ministry of Defense from October 1995 through July 1996. Numerous visits to the Slovenian and Istrian region since his residence there help broaden his unique perspective about this dispute. The views expressed here are the author’s personal views and do not necessarily reflect those of the Department of Defense, the United States Army, the United States Military Academy, or any other department or agency of the United States Government.

  • 200 Years of the Cemetery of Piran 1812 – 2012
200 YEARS OF THE CEMETERY OF PIRAN 1812 – 2012 In the year 2012 the town cem etery of Piran celebrated 200 years and the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the small cemetery church and the entrance hall. The cemetery of Piran is not only the last resting place of the inhabitants of Piran, but it is also a place of memory and rich historical and cultural heritage. The cemetery was built on an esclusive location with the views opening to the northern part of the Adriatic as far as Triglav, on the northwestern side to greater part of Italy to Venice, and on the south to Croatia. We are situated at a meeting point of three countries what is reflected also on the gravestones bearing evidence of the connection of the three cultures also beyond earthly life. The history of the town of Piran is written in this place. With all respect of dignity of every single individual with basic values and ethics it is our duty to preserve the cemetery as a symbol of memory of our deceased who represent an important part of our history. From the history The old town cemetery was situated near the parish church of St. George where there is now the pastoral cultural centre Georgios. Respectable families from Piran afforded to have thier last resting place in the tombs in the churches of Piran. Plan of burial spaces in the church of St. Francis and the tomb of Tartini family Some data imply the wish of the municipal assembly of Piran to move the cemetery out of the town walls (»extra muros«) already in the year 1765, that is long before Napoleon's edict.

This new species was recently identified as Pelagia benovici by Piraino et al. (2014) and then placed in the new genus Mawia by Avian et al. 2016. This species is rare and is almost exclusively observed in the Adriatic Sea. Interestingly, the majority of observations refer to males only. Few studies have addressed the issue of sex determination in Syphozoa in particular, as sex identity can only be determined at the medusa stage. Unfortunately, the rarity of M. benovici and the lack of female specimens have so far prevented indispensable laboratory studies to clarify its life Citation: Tirelli, V.; Kogovšek, T.; cycle. Still, we tried to propose an explanation for our field observations.

  • Bay of Piran Or Bay of Savudrija
A Mediterranean Example of Problematic Treatment of Geographical Names: Piranski zaliv (Bay of Piran) or Savudrijska vala (Bay of Savudrija)? Drago Kladnik, Milan Orožen Adamič, Primož Pipan ABSTRACT: The established geographical name Bay of Piran refers to the largest bay in the Gulf of Trieste at the extreme north end of the Adriatic Sea. After the collapse of Yugoslavia and the emergence of independent countries demarcated along the borders of the former Yugoslav republics, the previously undemarcated body of water between Slovenia and Croatia became the focus of a border dispute between the two countries. The name ‘Bay of Piran’ (Sln. Piranski zaliv, Cro. Piranski zaljev) is derived from the Italian name Vallone di Pirano ‘Bay of Piran’, which replaced the Italian name Valle di Sicciole ‘Bay of Sečovlje’ (as well as Ital. Valle di Siciole, Sln. Sečoveljski zaliv) a century and half ago. Since 2000 there have been Croatian attempts to establish the completely new name ‘Bay of Savudrija’ (Cro. Savudrijska vala, Sln. Savudrijski zaliv). GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA Slovenian Coast is situated at the far northern end of the Mediterranean, along the Gulf of Trieste, which is the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. The gulf has an approximate surface area slightly less than 600 km2 and sea volume of about 9.5 km3. It is a shallow marine basin, with maximum depths in its central part 20-25 m and average depth of 17 m, situated at the junction of the Dinaric Alps and the Alps. The Slovenian coast is only 46 km long, which is only one thousandth of the entire Mediterranean coastline. The aquatorium itself is formed in two bays, the Bay of Koper and the Bay of Piran, which are wide submerged valleys of rivers the Rizana and the Dragonja. The whole coastal area is divided into three municipalities, namely, Koper, Izola and Piran, and managed by one water-management authority, the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy, Regional Unit Koper. • INTRODUCTION the White Paper on the Border Between Slovenia And
INTRODUCTION The white paper on the border between Slovenia and Croatia was drawn up with a view to presenting to the broader public Slovenia’s positions, arguments and selection of documentary material favourable to Slovenia on resolving the maritime and land border issue. It must be taken into account that this white paper is no scientific treatise, therefore scientific critic is not expected. However, it could provide a sound foundation and basis for additional scientific argumentation of Slovenia's positions. Today, this is insufficient, particularly when compared with Croatia’s treatises and argumentations that serve as a basis for Croatia’s positions. If the white paper triggers critical and expertly (not only politically!) founded debate on the issue of the border between Slovenia and Croatia, then its objective will be reached. The publication of the white paper is an open invitation to those who may in any way wish to contribute to it. The publication of the white paper will be interpreted by some people as an early show of Slovenia’s weapons. Those may be satisfied that the white paper contains nothing that in one way or another, has not already been presented in public (and thus also to the Croatian side). Understandably, Slovenia has not disclosed all arguments yet. We would also like to underscore the following: The white paper is no scientific paper. No more is it a complete collection of Slovenia’s positions and documents. Therefore the white paper does not deal with some very interesting and demanding issues (e.g. historic bays, the uti possidetis principle, the comprehensive resolution of the border issue).
