These British Government papers define the definitions, rights, responsibilities and status of those fleeing Nazi Germany. The signatories from different countries are identified towards the end of the documents. There is also a sample of a questionnaire that refugees had to complete. 1. DAVIS , MORRIS H. [L ETTER , 17 APRIL 1939] London Federation of Synagogues 1939 27 cm, 3 pp, text in English, typed with Davis’ signature in facsimile at the end of the letter. Appeal sent out to all the members of the Federation calling for donations for the sake of Jewish Children refugees. It outlines different ways that could help the refugee children. It identifies the number of refugee children that could be helped if the synagogue levy was increased by 1 penny a week or 6 pennies a week. Some rust to staples and creasing. The letter is pre-Passover and links the issue to the Passover story. He starts off “Ever since the usurpation of power by the Nazis in January 1933 with their vicious and satanic hatred of the Jewish people, the sufferings of our brethren in Germany have been so titanic as to dwarf by comparison even the dark days of the Spanish Inquisition.“ The Federation of Synagogues is one of the largest groups of synagogues in the UK. This is an important and revealing piece of ephemera at a crucial stage of the Holocaust. [ref: 15860 ] £100 5. A pamphlet on the participation of the Soviet Jewry in the war against Nazi Germany, written by David Bergelson, one of the top Soviet-Yiddish writers. RUSSO -JEWISH COMMITTEE A SHORT STATEMENT OF THE PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS IN RUSSIA London Russo-Jewish Committee 1891 Caption title, 24 cm 4pp a four page document making 28 points relating to difficult circumstances and legal disadvantages of the Jewish community in Russia. Very good condition. An important historic document dealing what was then the most pressing issue facing the Jewish community. [ref: 12261 ] £65 6 14. GRODZIENSKI, CHAIM OZER , FINKEL L. J. YOFEN , ABRAHAM [H OLOCAUST ] THE REAL JEWISH PROBLEM. 1930s Original wrappers,21cm, 8pp, text in English. Staples rusty, some foxing, damp staining to pages. A rare pamphlet imploring American and British Jews to support the Yeshivot, (Talmudical and rabbinical colleges) in Poland who were having an extremely difficult time surviving. The last part particularly appeals to British Jews and they have asked Rev L Israel of Manchester to draw the attention of British Jews and says that the “learned students, numbering over 1,000 whose very existence is in jeopardy for want of bread.” The document was signed by three of the leading rabbis in pre-war Eastern Europe - Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, Rav Lazer Finkel, Rosh Yeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva and Rav Avraham Yofen. A scarce pamphlet that outlines the situation in 16 countries in Europe and deals with the issue of "Displaced Person" and refugees The Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry was set up in 1945 to "examine political, economic, and social conditions in Palestine as they bear upon the problem of social conditions in Palestine as they bear on the problem of Jewish 9 immigration and settlement therein and the well-being of the people now living therein," and "to examine the position of the Jews in those countries in Europe where they have been victims of Nazi and Fascist persecution" [ref: 14730 ] £75 19.
