DAVIS , MORRIS H. [L ETTER , 17 APRIL 1939] London Federation of Synagogues 1939 27 cm, 3 pp, text in English, typed with Davis’ signature in facsimile at the end of the letter. Appeal sent out to all the members of the Federation calling for donations for the sake of Jewish Children refugees. It outlines different ways that could help the refugee children. It identifies the number of refugee children that could be helped if the synagogue levy was increased by 1 penny a week or 6 pennies a week. Some rust to staples and creasing. The letter is pre-Passover and links the issue to the Passover story. He starts off “Ever since the usurpation of power by the Nazis in January 1933 with their vicious and satanic hatred of the Jewish people, the sufferings of our brethren in Germany have been so titanic as to dwarf by comparison even the dark days of the Spanish Inquisition.“ The Federation of Synagogues is one of the largest groups of synagogues in the UK. This is an important and revealing piece of ephemera at a crucial stage of the Holocaust. [ref: 15860 ] £100 5. A pamphlet on the participation of the Soviet Jewry in the war against Nazi Germany, written by David Bergelson, one of the top Soviet-Yiddish writers. A rare pamphlet imploring American and British Jews to support the Yeshivot, (Talmudical and rabbinical colleges) in Poland who were having an extremely difficult time surviving. The last part particularly appeals to British Jews and they have asked Rev L Israel of Manchester to draw the attention of British Jews and says that the “learned students, numbering over 1,000 whose very existence is in jeopardy for want of bread.” The document was signed by three of the leading rabbis in pre-war Eastern Europe - Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, Rav Lazer Finkel, Rosh Yeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva and Rav Avraham Yofen.     | 63 Changing the Landscape: Pluralist Jewish Education in the UK Helena Miller Introduction The ways in which the Jewish community in the UK has met the challenge of living in a pluralist society, as well as within a pluralist Jewish community, are addressed in this chapter as the changing pattern of Jewish education is explored. The development of a Jewish schooling system in the UK has reflected social, political and historical situations spanning five centuries. These developments have occurred in response to shifting perspectives within the main religious denominations in the mainstream Jewish community, as well as in response to educational, cultural and demographic changes in the UK in general, all of which impacted in different ways on Jewish schooling. Defining pluralism in the context of Jewish schools is complex and this chapter looks at what pluralism means both within a school and in the school's relationship with the wider community. In this paper the terms cross-communal and community are used in addition to the term pluralist, both by the institutions themselves in their self definition and by authors of explorations of pluralism in practice. 64 | Changing the Landscape | Helena Miller The Jewish community in the UK In order to understand the development of pluralist Jewish schools and schooling in the UK, it is important to understand the development and growth of the strands of the UK Jewish community over time. The first record of Jews living in the UK comes from more than a thousand years ago. But by the end of the 13th century the Jews were banished from Britain, to be reinstated more than 300 years later in 1656 by Oliver Cromwell, then Lord Protector of England (Fletcher-Jones, 1990).

    'I' •!• * * * * Western Europe GREAT BRITAIN OWARD THE END of the period under review (July 1, 1957, through June 30, T 1958) the popularity of the government headed by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan began to recover from the low point to which it had fallen during the year. The government's deflationary policies combined with an improve- ment in the terms of trade to produce a sharp rise in gold and dollar assets. At the same time, economic activity slackened, though only a few areas had noticeable unemployment. The recession in the United States during the autumn of 1957 and winter of 1958 tended to lessen confidence in the future. The international situation remained a source of concern, though it was less tense than during the Suez crisis in the fall of 1956. Within the Jewish com- munity the most noteworthy event during the year was the enthusiastic cele- bration of the tenth anniversary of the State of Israel. International Relations On July 15, 1957, Robert Carvalho, president of the Anglo-Jewish Associa- tion (AJA), stated that the Association was giving "serious consideration" to making contact with Russian Jewry. Maurice Edelman, M.P., chairman of the AJA foreign affairs committee, added that he had been in touch with the foreign secretary about the advisability of sending a delegation, but no fur- ther developments in this direction were reported during the year. Ten months later, on May 6, 1958, Edelman spoke of "Khrushchev's anxiety to bring about a new mood on Jewish affairs" and described as "often baseless and very damaging" certain "irresponsible statements on the position of Soviet Jewry" made by "an irresponsible clique." On April 19-20, 1958, Alderman Abram Moss, senior vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, represented British Jewry in Warsaw at the commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto.
