Since 1971, the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, one of Germany’s largest private foundations, has been involved in the funding of projects in various fields of science and research, education and training, as well as arts and culture. The ZEIT-Stiftung was established by Gerd Bucerius, the late founder and publisher of Germany’s leading quality weekly, DIE ZEIT. Among the foundation’s trustees are former German President Roman Herzog, former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, and Theo Sommer, Editor-at-Large of DIE ZEIT. Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Manfred Lahnstein, former German Minister of Finance. The Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung was established by the IT entrepre- neur Heinz Nixdorf, who died in 1986. The Foundation promotes education, scientific research especially in the field of information technology, and projects devoted to the advancement of the liberal and democratic governmental system and of public health.
