The fullest expression of the whig interpretation of western Canadian history is to be found in the works of George F.G. Stanley and W.L. Morton. In presenting a narrative reconstruction of the events surrounding Canada's annexation of Red River, these authors primarily attempt to justify Canadian policy as the extension of British civilization. -

Nous y analysons les éléments narratifs et discursifs mobilisés dans les différents récits des Rébellions déployés dans les synthèses d'histoire nationale que ces historiens ont écrites. Il s'agit d'une étude sur le temps long qui s'intéresse aux constantes de ce discours et à ses changements au fil des différentes périodes de l'historiographie canadienne-anglaise. Une attention particulière est donnée à la manière dont ce discours identitaire s'articule par opposition à la représentation qui est brossée du fait français et des Canadiens français. -

This year, for example, along with the customary launch of the Fall RACAR–a “Critical Curating” special issue edited by Marie Fraser and Alice Ming Wai Jim–and the perennial opportunity to renew old relationships and start fresh ones, we’ll kick off UAAC’s new website. Also, rather than a keynote lecture, we’ll have keynote performances by Louise Liliefeldt and Lori Blondeau, an exciting outgrowth of performance’s rising importance as a mode of presentation at our conference. Thanks to the conference organizers, Joan Coutu and Bojana Videkanic, for their insight in suggesting this shift, and for the rest of their hard work on this conference. The programming committee– Joan Coutu, Bojana Videkanic and Annie Gérin– also must be recognized for its great work reviewing session proposals. And, as always, huge applause for Fran Pauzé, UAAC’s administrator, who has kept us on track day in and day out for years now. As you know, our conference’s dynamism flows from the continued broadening and revitalization of UAAC’s constituency. However, the difficult state of culture and education today makes participation by students and precariously-employed faculty harder and harder. -

“Abundantly Worthy of its Past”: Agnes Maule Machar and Early Canadian Historical Fiction Janice Fiamengo hen STORIE S OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (1914) was brought out by William Briggs, a prominent Methodist publisher in Toronto, Agnes Maule Machar (1837-1927) was in her late Wseventies and had spent her adult life chronicling the moral dimensions of British and Canadian history. Although she is little known today, Machar was a successful writer in late-Victorian Canada whose career, spanning five decades, illuminates the historical and national preoccupations of her era. Stories of the British Empire, a series of historical sketches written mainly for children, was one of her last book-length works and a fitting culmination of her life work in its providential view of history and its emphasis on imperialism as a Christian enterprise. In the work’s foreword, Machar speaks to adult readers to emphasize the moral lesson in history, especially the evidence of divine purpose revealed by the development of the British Empire: No one, surely, with any adequate belief in the Divine Ruler of the Universe, can study the wonderful Story of our British Empire with- out being impressed with a sense of its Divine purpose, its final mis- sion to humanity, as the end for which the shoot of Saxon freedom, planted in British soil, has grown into the greatest Empire this world has ever seen. For, despite all conflicts within and without, all checks, reactions and hindrances arising from human selfishness and self-will, all temporary triumphs of tyranny, we inherit a régime of “Peace and good-will,” gradually beaten out by our sturdy forefathers, into a just and free government. -

Tom Thomson (1877–1917) is one of Canada’s most famous artists: his landscape paintings of northern Ontario have become iconic artworks, well-known throughout the country and a critical touchstone for Canadian artists. Thomson was passionate about the outdoors, and he was committed to experimenting with new ways to paint landscape. He had several friends who shared these interests, such as A.Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Lawren Harris (1885–1970), and J.E.H. MacDonald (1873–1932); a few years after his premature death, these friends helped establish the Group of Seven, a collection of artists often credited with transforming Canadian art by creating modern depictions of national landscapes. -
