We all have to do our part to help each other,” said Rabbi Mendy Dubrowski, director of the center. The rabbi’s wife, Dina Dubrowski, added, “We must do everything in our power to feed anyone that is hungry. Having access to free fruits and vegetables will lift some of the burden that our community is going through in these hard times.” The food distribution effort is sponsored by the USDA, Simply Fresh and Farmers to Families. Each 10-pound box handed out was packed fresh with ingredients and nutrition information and included sweet broccoli salad, garden salad, creamy jalapeno slaw, baby carrots and ranch dip, summer salad, fresh sliced apples or seasonal fruit. Benjamin from the park, even though Jewish communities were actively seeking to remove tributes to Benjamin in North Carolina and California. Sims, an African American, announced his petition effort on July 20. He says he plans to submit it to state officials before next year’s legislative session. As of press-time, the peti- tion had gained more than 900 signatures. It remains unclear whether he has support of the organized Jewish community. As the state park is within the service area of the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, the Jewish Press made contact with that organi- zation prior to its initial story. The response from Jessi Sheslow, director of community relations, was there appeared to be no discus- sion about the park’s name, within or outside the Jewish community. However, Sims said not long after that he called Howard Tevlowitz, CEO of the Sarasota-Manatee Federation, and that he seemed receptive to support of the petition. Efforts to reach Tevlowitz or Sheslow were unsuccessful by press deadline. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC. Member SPC The online petition, created through Change.com, calls for renaming the park and seeks a “re-contextualizing of the Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial … to create a space on this former plantation to memorialize the enslaved victims who were Business & Professional Directory bonded to this land.” Inquiries to the state Department of En- vironmental Regulation, which runs state parks, indicate that the names of all state parks are under review, but no information was forthcoming on when a decision may be reached. In an Aug. 2 column in the Tallahassee Democrat, Sims explained his reasoning for the petition and some background on the stare park in Ellenton: “In 1925, the United Daughters of the Confederacy gifted the Gamble Mansion and Plantation … to the state of Florida in memory of Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin. In 1970, this memorial, then as a state park, applied for historic space status at the National Registry. In its application, the ‘Statement of Sig- nification’ section began with: “This lovely antebellum mansion is the only Confederate shrine in the State, as well as the oldest build- ing on the west coast of Florida. The mansion is designated the Judah P. Benjamin Memo- rial because of its connection with a dramatic episode in the last days of the Civil War. In another sense, it is a memorial to a way of life and a system of economy that were swept away by that war.” Sims opined that, “Slave plantations FRAN SCHWARTZ should be a source of collective shame and Realtor ® sorrow, a historic source of healing, not a Cell: (813) 220-7171 space to have a ‘Gone with the Wind’ mo- Ph: (813) 908-8500 ment or weddings or picnics.
