Insofar as Kongzi has stood for certain foundational values and prac- tices, including learning (xue 學), reverence for the past (gu 古), ritual propri- ety (li 禮), the nobility of official service (shi 仕 / shi 士), and the interdependence of family virtues like filial piety (xiao 孝) with official virtues like loyalty (zhong 忠), the Lunyu has been a potent “initiation text” into that tradition, to borrow a phrase from Robert Eno—or, to quote one early witness, it is “the linchpin of the Five Classics and the mouthpiece of the Six Arts” (五經之錧鎋, 六藝之喉衿 也).1 To this day, the practice of introducing traditional China via the Lunyu continues in classrooms around the world. The Lunyu certainly lends itself to the role of gatekeeper text. As a guide to the quotable Kongzi, it is short (ca. 16,000 characters) and divided into five hundred or so bite-sized, easily memorized bons mots. Even its challenges are conducive to reader engagement. The text does not present Kongzi’s teachings in ways that a modern academic philosopher would recognize as rigorous. Logical connections between and across entries are implicit at best. Contra- dictions abound. Entries of various formats (sayings, comments, dialogues, anecdotes, testimonia) are strung together indiscriminately with little or no context.2 The Lunyu is not disorganized so much as unconstructed, the overall effect of which is to invite, even demand, the active participation of readers in ways that few other classical texts do. The text also facilitates this process by tempting readers with the promise of “a single thread tying [Kongzi’s Way] to- gether” (一以貫之; 4/15 and 15/3) or the challenge of reconstructing the “three [unexpressed] corners” (san yu 三隅) for every “single corner” (yi yu 一隅; 7/8) in the text itself. The Lunyu has played an especially important role in the development of early China studies in the modern era. As a record of the teachings of the figure widely considered the earliest philosopher and “first teacher” (xian­ shi 先師), the Lunyu continues to anchor the contemporary imagination of the Warring States “Masters” (zhuzi 諸子). In the last century or so, many of the most important voices in the field of classical Chinese philosophy have done a great deal of “thinking through Confucius” and the Lunyu, to quote David Hall and Roger Ames.3 Within the history of philology, the Lunyu has provided fer- tile ground for the development of various critical methodologies. Whenever philologists set out to reorder a text’s juan 卷 (fascicles, chapters) or zhang 章 (paragraphs, entries) with the aim of sequencing its layers chronologically, wit- tingly or not they are following a path paved centuries earlier by Itō Jinsai 伊藤 仁斎 (1627–1705), Cui Shu 崔述 (1740–1816), and others who sought to identify Kongzi’s original teachings amid the Lunyu’s miscellanies.4 The Continuing Currency of the Lunyu Nearly two decades into the twenty-first century, the field of Lunyu studies is as vibrant as ever. Since 2000, publications in English have included new transla- tions by Edward Slingerland (2003), Pan Fu’en and Wen Shaoxia (2005), and Ann-ping Chin (2014); reprints of older translations by Arthur Waley (2000), Burton Watson (2007), Simon Leys (2014), and David Hinton (2014); collections of essays edited by Bryan W. Van Norden (Confucius and the Analects: New Es­ says; 2002), David Jones (Confucius Now: Contemporary Encounters with the Analects; 2008), Amy Olberding (Dao Companion to the Analects; 2014), and Michael Nylan (The Analects [Norton Critical Edition]; 2014); monographs by Daniel K.

    List of translations into English of the Shiji of Sima Qian (Ssu-ma Ch’ien) and the “Letter to Ren An” The numbered list below includes the translations into English known to me of the 130 chapters of the Shiji by Sima Qian (or, Ssu-ma Ch’ien; 145-c. 90 BCE) and of Sima Qian’s “Letter to Ren An,” which is chapter 62 of the Han Shu written by Ban Gu (32-92 CE).     INTRODUCTION Four main characteristics distinguish this book from other translations of Laozi. First, the base of my translation is the oldest existing edition of Laozi. It was excavated in 1973 from a tomb located in Mawangdui, the city of Changsha, Hunan Province of China, and is usually referred to as Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi because it is the older of the two texts of Laozi unearthed from it.1 Two facts prove that the text was written before 202 bce, when the first emperor of the Han dynasty began to rule over the entire China: it does not follow the naming taboo of the Han dynasty;2 its handwriting style is close to the seal script that was prevalent in the Qin dynasty (221–206 bce). Second, I have incorporated the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents, disentombed in 1993 in Jishan District’s tomb complex in the village of Guodian, near the city of Jingmen, Hubei Province of China. These documents include three bundles of bamboo slips written in the Chu script and contain passages related to the extant Laozi.3 Third, I have made extensive use of old commentaries on Laozi to provide the most comprehensive interpretations possible of each passage. Finally, I have examined myriad Chinese classic texts that are closely associated with the formation of Laozi, such as Zhuangzi, Lüshi Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lü), Han Feizi, and Huainanzi, to understand the intellectual and historical context of Laozi’s ideas. In addition to these characteristics, this book introduces several new interpretations of Laozi.

Yet the ways in which personal life experiences, ideas, and the creation of texts are interwoven in these accounts are diverse and uneven and do not add up to a reliable guide to early Chinese thought and its protagonists. In its selective approach to different thinkers, the Shiji under-represents significant parts of the textual heritage while developing several distinctive models of authorship, from anonymous compilations of textual repertoires to the experience of personal hardship and political frustration as the precondition for turning into a writer. Jasmyn Murrell Virtuous Life, Honored Afterlife and the Evolution of Confucianism By Jasmyn Murrell Abstract: Confucius states that we must not focus on the afterlife, because we know so little of it, and we must focus on everyday life. However, Confucianism holds a philosophy of afterlife, even if it is not outright said or depicted. This paper will aim to prove just that. First, through Confucian ideals of being a dutiful person, to grant yourself an honored afterlife, and second, through how Confucianism influenced other religions such as Buddhism and Daoism, which will show a clear depiction of afterlife by considering death rituals, festivals, commune with ancestors, prayers, tomb decor, and the ideology of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism – you will begin to see the depiction of afterlife within Confucianism. But also, you will get to see how Confucianism has evolved and took on traits of both Daoism and Buddhism, which in turn is called Neo-Confucianism.

Primary sources are sources of information-artifacts, books, art, and more- that were created close to the time period they are about and by someone who lived in proximity to that period. Primary sources can be first hand accounts, original data, or direct knowledge and their contents are analyzed by historians to draw conclusions about the past. There are many fields where scholars use different forms of primary sources; for example, archaeologists study artifacts while philologists study language.

    《中國文化研究所學報》 Journal of Chinese Studies No. 59 - July 2014 On Shiji 22, Table Ten: A Year-by-Year Table of Generals, Chancellors, and Prominent Officials since the Founding of the Han Dynasty* Shu-hui Wu Mississippi State University 1 Among the ten tables in the Shiji 史 記 Table Ten (“Han xing yilai jiang xiang mingchen nianbiao” 漢興以來將相名臣年表) is most complex to interpret. Scholars from the Han times throughout the imperial period either expressed doubts about its authenticity and authorship because of its unconventional presentation or simply avoided mentioning it. Their negative judgements and confusion over Table Ten may have stemmed from a two-fold challenge: the ambiguities of the Table itself, given that entries in the Table extend well beyond the lifetime of Sima Qian 司馬遷 (145–c. 99 B.C.) himself; and the suspicions and criticisms, justified or not, raised by detractors of the Shiji. Modern Chinese scholars have contributed analyses and discussions of Table Ten from various perspectives, but so far none of them have connected its physical layout and authorial purpose to its Han administrative back- ground. In Western scholarship to the present there has been little discussion and no translation of the Table itself.     CHAPTER SIX CONFUCIANISM, MOHISM, AND TAOISM In the first century A.D. and afterwards Indian Buddhism spread to China and developed there in distinctive ways. Ideologically, however, it is of greater moment to consider what contributions were made to our theme by the two outstanding religious move­ ments of purely Chinese origin. l. Confucius and the Intervention of Heaven Although he has sometimes been classified as an agnostic, Confu­ cius (K'ung-fu-tzii), who was born in the middle of the sixth century B.C., included a clearly religious element in his teaching. Of the works associated with him, the Analects are accepted as the compilation most genuinely credited with his authorship; they were compiled, it seems, not more than some seventy years after his death. A great zeal for education and for offering it to all is apparent; an emphasis on li, 'ceremonial', with an attendant sense of reverence and propriety; and a basic aim in presenting the Way (Tao), sometimes called the Way of Heaven and thus invested with a religious aura. 1 Virtue (te) is also said to be a gift of Heaven: Heaven is the author of the virtue that is in me ( 7. 23) .2 A variety of topics is touched on in the Analects, but a certain reserve is shown in the Master's approach to the gods: The topics the Master did not speak of were prodigies, force, disorder, and gods. (Analects, 7.21; tr. D.C. Lau, 88.) Arthur Waley3 translates thus: The Master never talked of prodigies, feats of strength, disorders or spirits.
