Abstract Modality is a basic meaning combined into an utterance, each of the utterances is always divided up two parts: dictum and modus. Dictum is the main information; modus is the additional one of the utterance to express an attitude of judgement, assumption or a status of the speaker to the state of affairs. Nowadays, modality has been concerned by linguists due to its complexity but its full interest. In any languages, if people take modality out of an utterance, its state of affairs will become dry, poor and lose the beauty of the language. Cao Xuan Hao stated that the proposition of any utterance must contains a modus (or combine many segments of modus). Based on this statement, this paper desires summary different concepts and categories of modality in order to help us recognize easy epistemic modality and have a plan to study it fully. It examines the relation between the synchronic uses of the modal auxiliary must and the semi-modals have to and have got to as well as their Lithuanian translation correspondences (TCs) found in a bidirectional translation corpus. The study exploits quantitative and qualitative methods of research. The purpose is to find out which type of modality is most common in the use of must, have to and have got to; to establish their equivalents in Lithuanian in terms of congruent or non-congruent correspondence (Johansson 2007); and to determine how Lithuanian TCs (verbs or adverbials) correlate with different types of modality expressed. The analysis has shown that must is mostly used to convey epistemic nuances, while have to and have got to feature in non-epistemic environments. The findings show that must can boast of a great diversity of TCs. Some of them may serve as epistemic markers; others appear in deontic domains only. Have (got) to, on the other hand, is usually rendered by the modal verbs reikėti ‘need’ and turėti ‘must/have to’, which usually encode deontic modality.     LiLT volume 14, issue (4) August 2016 A linguistically-motivated annotation model of modality in English and Spanish: Insights from MULTINOT Julia LAVID, Marta CARRETERO and Juan Rafael ZAMORANO-MANSILLA, Universidad Complutense de Madrid Abstract In this paper we present current work on the design and validation of a linguistically-motivated annotation model of modality in English and Spanish in the context of the MULTINOT project.1 Our annotation model captures four basic modal meanings and their subtypes, on the one hand, and provides a fine-grained characterisation of the syntactic realisations of those meanings in English and Spanish, on the other. We validate the modal tagset proposed through an agreement study per- formed on a bilingual sample of four hundred sentences extracted from original texts of the MULTINOT corpus, and discuss the difficult cases encountered in the annotation experiment. We also describe current steps in the implementation of the proposed scheme for the large-scale annotation of the bilingual corpus using both automatic and manual procedures. 1The MULTINOT project is financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, under grant number FF2012-32201. The relationship between modality and factivity is examined with the aim of gaining an insight into the former, more complex concept. When viewed from this perspective, the defining characteristic of all the modal auxiliary verbs in almost all of their uses is found to be nonfactivity. The meanings expressed by this set of verbs are classified according to a framework derived from modal logic consisting of three basic types of modality each of which relates to a different set of laws or principles; the relative factivity associated with the modal auxiliaries is seen to vary with the nature of modality as defined and classified by this framework. Within each of the three types of modality, a semantic scale is identified and modality is described as a gradable concept for which scalar analysis is appropriate, both within and beyond these three scales. Relative factivity is also shown to vary according to the degree of modality expressed by each of the modal verbs. The nature and degree of modality expressed interact with features of the linguistic (and pragmatic) context to determine the particular factive or a contrafactive interpretation conveyed by a given modal auxiliary token.

Displacement along the temporal dimension allows speakers to talk about circumstances and events obtaining at different times and to relate them to their actual now (see Chapter III.2). Displacement along the modal dimension allows speakers to talk about circum- stances and events that need not be part of the actual course of events at all. For this, languages use content words (like belief or seek), morphological marking (like the Romance subjunctives), func- tional words (like the English modal auxiliaries), as well as complex constructions. ‘Modality’ can then be defined as the category of grammatical devices that serve to express displacement along the modal dimension. In the following, we will build on this understanding to present an overview over the relevant expressions and constructions in contemporary Japanese. While relatively standard in current formal semantic theories (cf. Portner 2009, Hacquard 2011), our understanding of modality is largely orthogonal to the tradition in Japanese linguistics and func- tional or cognitive approaches in Western linguistics (see Larm 2006; Narrog 2012 for recent overviews in English).

In addition to its main function, namely reference to future time, do + subjunctive is also often used to express clear modal meaning. This modal meaning that characterizes do + subjunctive can be read in a variety of ways, depending on the context in which it appears. It can be used to express an epistemic conclusion, a conclusion based on speaker’s general knowledge or experience. This grammatical form can also be used to express different forms of deontic modality such as an order or a promise. Though less commonly, do + subjunctive can also be used to express speaker’s volition or desire.

In this dissertation, I describe and analyze the TAM system of Badiaranke, an Atlantic (Niger- Congo) language spoken in Senegal, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, which manifests several cross-linguistically unusual features. I develop a new semantic proposal for Badiaranke TAM that explains its distinctive properties while also building on the insights of earlier analyses of TAM in more commonly studied languages. Aspect in Badiaranke has two initially surprising features. First, the perfective is used to talk not only about past events (as expected), but also about present states (not expected). This study examines their manifestation in texts. The data comprises 3,069 verbal groups obtained by orthographically transcribing Christian Religious Knowledge, Geography, Physics, and Chemistry lessons recorded in schools in Lagos, Nigeria and identifying all the verbal groups therein. The topics taught were respectively The mission of the Church, The Drainage System, Electric Field, and Nitrogen. The scale-and-category version of the systemic grammatical model, complemented by simple percentage, aided the analysis. Results show that mood recurred far more than modality; mood represents 72 per cent of the data and 81 per cent of the finite verbal groups as against modality’s 13 and 14. However, modality was higher than interrogative mood and imperative mood, which respectively represent 11 and 8.3 per cent of finite. Imperative mood recurred more in Physics, and was more frequently occurring in segments of the lesson involving strict computation. Root modality and Epistemic modality manifested at a ratio of 3:2 in favour of Root meaning, but Epistemic modality was significantly higher than Root modality in Physics. The study confirms WILL and CAN as the most recurring modals, and finds that they exceeded the reported 4.2 and 3.5 in 1,000 word-occurrence by 67 and 46 per cent respectively.
