Jengkerik Anaxipha longipennis Serville (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) adalah salah satu predator generalis di habitat sawah yang menyukai telur pelipat daun padi dan serangga-serangga kecil lain seperti wereng-wereng padi. Jengkerik betina menyisipkan telurnya pada batang atau pelepah daun padi dan gulma-gulma di habitat sawah. Tempat bertelur yang disukai akan menjamin keberlanjutan keberadaan jengkerik di habitat sawah. Pada penelitian ini telah dicoba untuk mengetahui jenis gulma yang dipilih sebagai tempat bertelur selain pada tanaman padi. Tujuh belas species gulma dan padi telah dipaparkan pada 5 pasang jengkerik sebagai tempat bertelur pada suatu percobaan memilih secara bebas. Sembilan spesies gulma telah dipilih sebagai tempat bertelur oleh A. longipennis selain padi. Telur diletakkan paling banyak pada padi dan berturut-turut diikuti pada Monochoria vaginalis, Cyperus rotundus, C. iria, Echinochloa colonum, E. crusgalli, Eleusine indica, Fimbristylis miliacea, Imperata cylindrica, dan Limnocharis flava. Sedangkan Alternanthera sessilis, Ludwigia adscen- dens, Commelina diffusa, Leersia hexandra, Leptochloa chinensis, P. repens, Ageratum conyzoides dan Sonchus arvensis tidak dipilih oleh A. longipennis sebagai tempat bertelur. KATA KUNCI: Anaxipha longipennis, tempat bertelur, padi, gulma ABSTRACT The Oviposition Preference of Anaxipha longipennis Serville (Orthop- tera: Gryllidae) on Several Weeds in Rice Field. Anaxipha longipennis Serville (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) is one of the generalist predator in rice ha- bitat that has a potential as a biological control agents of rice leaf folder eggs and small insects such as rice hoppers. Females insert their eggs in plant tissue. The female’s oviposition site is important for the subsequent distribution of the cricket. Oviposition preference on 17 weeds species from rice habitat were tested in a free choice experiment in the laboratory. There was strong evidence to conclude that the cricket preferred certain plant for laying eggs. In free choice experiment nine species of weeds were preferred by A. longipennis for laying their eggs instead of rice. Responses of test subjects were documented while presenting playbacks of manipulated songs. Each playback treatment had a unique response from the crickets being tested. ALEXANDER Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 INTRODUCTION Several accounts have been written of the mating behavior of different species of ground crickets (Fulton, 1931; Richards, 1952; Gabbutt, 1954), and many excellent descriptions of their songs, based on auditory impressions, have appeared (Fulton, 1930, 1931, 1932; Cantrall, 1943; and many others). A few song analyses have been made with mechanical or electronic devices (Fulton, 1933; Pielemeier, 1946, 1946a; Pierce, 1948). Detailed comparative studies of song relationships in the singing Orthoptera and Cicadidae are almost non-existent, though it is increasingly apparent that satisfactory interpretations of the taxonomic and distri- butional relationships of these species will depend on such studies. The present investigation is based on laboratory and field observations, and on tape recordings of songs analyzed by means of a Vibralyzer. The species dis- cussed include Nemobius carolinus carolinus Scudder, N. confusus Blatchley, and N. melodius Thomas and Alexander, the only eastern representatives of the sub- genus Eunemobius Hebard. A fourth species, N. maculatus Blatchley, belonging in the subgenus Allonemobius Hebard, is also considered here because of certain distributional and song relationships with the above species. The recordings used for song analysis are deposited in the Library of Animal Sounds, Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University. They were made with a Magnemite, Model 610-E (in the field) and a Magnecorder, Model PT6A (in the laboratory) at a tape speed of fifteen inches per second. In advance of a descriptive catalogue of the Orthoptera found within a radius of fifty miles of New York City and a(ijacent districts, the following notes and descriptions of some apparently new species are presented. Nemobius affinis, sp. nov. Shining, head and thorax fusco-testaceous or wholly piceous and sparsely covered with rather long hairs. Antennae longer than the body. Wing covers of the female not reaching the tip of the abdomen, and with a paler line along the angle where the wing covers turn down at the sides. In the male the wing covers extend to the tip of the abdomen. Hind wings absent in both the sexes. The abdomen above is blackish, with faint traces of some paler spots; on the underside the body is wholly testaceous, as are also the legs, but somewhat darker. Anal cerci extending beyond the ovipositor, which points obliquely upwards. Length of body about 6-8 mm. ; ovipositor of female, 3-4 mm. ; cerci, 3.5-4 mm. 7Tvpes: males and females, Coll. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist. Collected in Connecticut and different places in the vicinity of New York City; also taken in abundance on Staten Island by Mr. Davis. Closely allied to Xemobius fasciatus, form vittalus, buLt smaller and more shining. It also differs by the shortness of the oviposi- tor, it being about one-half as long, and by having the abdomen wholly testaceous beneath.
