SNACKTIME BRASS BAND A Guide on brass instruments from the #MannMusicRoom INSTRUMENTS IN THE BAND Euphonium - makes low sounds, similar to the trombone. The euphonium has 3 or 4 valves and 1-3 spit valves. "Spit" valves do not really mean there is spit in the instrument, it means that there is condensation in the instrument. Musicians play the euphonium by blowing into the instrument and "buzzing" with their lips. The word euphonium means: "producing nice sounds" Saxophone- often just called a "sax", the saxophone is made of brass but NOT part of the brass family of instruments! Due to the fact it is made from brass it is often involved in a brass section of a band alongside true brass instruments like the euphonium or trumpet. However, the saxophone is actually a member of the woodwind family of instruments because it has a reed. Did you know that instrument most similar to the saxophone is actually the clarinet? Trumpet - perhaps the most recognized brass instrument of them all, the trumpet is the oldest member of the brass family. Trumpets were played as long ago as ancient Egypt! At that time though the trumpet was more similar to the bugle, often associated with government and military activities. It wasn't until 1820 that the valve system was first invented and added to the instrument design as we know it today. The valves allow the player to change the length of the tube that the air travels through and enables them to play a greater variety of notes.
