  • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

  • Pandeiro 1 Pandeiro
Pandeiro 1 Pandeiro Pandeiro Other names Pandeiro, drums Classification hand percussion Playing range High sound of jingles, plus some have a skin with a lower sound. Related instruments Riq, Buben, Dayereh, Daf, Kanjira, Frame drum The pandeiro (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐ̃ˈdejɾu]) is a type of hand frame drum. There are two important distinctions between a pandeiro and the common tambourine. The tension of the head on the pandeiro can be tuned, allowing the player a choice of high and low notes. Also, the metal jingles (called platinelas in Portuguese) are cupped, creating a crisper, drier and less sustained tone on the pandeiro than on the tambourine. This provides clarity when swift, complex rhythms are played. It is held in one hand, and struck on the head by the other hand to produce the sound. Typical pandeiro patterns are played by alternating the thumb, fingertips, heel, and palm of the hand. A pandeiro can also be shaken to make sound, or one can run a finger along the head to create a "rasp" noise. The pandeiro is used in a number of Brazilian music forms, such as Samba, Choro, Coco, and Capoeira music (see Capoeira songs). The Brazilian pandeiro derives from the pandeireta or pandereta of Spain and Portugal. Some of the best-known pandeiro players today are Paulinho Da Costa, Airto Moreira, Marcos Suzano, Cyro Baptista, and Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro. Artists such as Stanton Moore use it non-traditionally by tuning it low to sound like a floor tom with jingles, mounting it on a stand and integrating it into the modern drum kit.

  • Rhythms and Rhymes of Life
RHYTHMSRHYMES AND RHYTHMS AND RHYMES OF LIFE Rhythms and Rhymes of Life: Music and Identification Processes of Dutch- Moroccan Youth is a comprehensive anthropological study of the social significance of music among Dutch-Moroccan youth. In the Netherlands, a Dutch-Moroccan music scene has emerged, including events and websites. Dutch-Moroccan youth are often pioneers in the Dutch hip- OF hop scene, using music as a tool to identify with or distance themselves from others. They (re)present and position themselves in society through LIFE music and musical activities. The chapters deal with the development of the Dutch-Moroccan music scene, the construction of Dutch-Moroccan identity, the impact of Islam on female artists and the way Dutch- Moroccan rappers react to stereotypes about Moroccans. All along, Dutch society, its struggles with multiculturalism and its debates on integration, the position of Islam and fear of terrorism, form the backdrop to this story. RHYTHMS AND MIRIAM GAZZAH Miriam Gazzah has studied Mediterranean studies at the Radboud RHYMES OF LIFE University Nijmegen. She graduated in 2001. Her master thesis focused on the development of the raï music subculture in the seventies, eighties and nineties in Algeria. Between 2003 and 2007 she was a PhD Fellow at MUSIC AND IDENTIFICATION International Institute for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) in Leiden and the Radboud University Nijmegen. • Joe Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014)
Joe Sample (February 1, 1939 – September 12, 2014) There was no way you could mention The Crusaders, without mentioning Joe Sample. In the 70’s, and 80’s, this group was a hit after hit cranking machine. The Crusaders had a special way of mixing so many styles together to come up with masterpiece after masterpiece that you never got tired of hearing. Joseph Leslie "Joe" Sample was an American pianist, keyboard player and composer. He was one of the founding members of the Jazz Crusaders, the band which became simply The Crusaders in 1971, and remained a part of the group until its final album in 1991 (not including the 2003 reunion album Rural Renewal). Beginning in the early 1980s, he enjoyed a successful solo career and guested on many recordings by other performers and groups, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, and The Supremes. Sample incorporated jazz, gospel, blues, Latin, and classical forms into his music. The group quickly found opportunities on the West Coast, making its first recording, Freedom Sounds in 1961 and releasing up to four albums a year over much of the 1960s. The Jazz Crusaders played at first in the dominant hard bop style of the day, standing out by virtue of their unusual front-line combination of saxophone (played by Wilton Felder) and Henderson's trombone. Another distinctive quality was the funky, rhythmically appealing acoustic piano playing of Sample, who helped steer the group's sound into a fusion between jazz and soul[2] in the late 1960s.
