According to the guide, the stories are good drug prevention tools because they touch the heart, spirit, and mind; give examples of how to deal with problems; help develop self-awareness and self-esteem; and can be the basis of many activities.

    Afterword: Embracing the Tar-Baby-LatCrit Theory and the Sticky Mess of Race Leslie Espinozat and Angela P. HarrisT In this Afterword, Leslie Espinoza and Angela Harris identify some of the submerged themes of this Symposium and reflect on LatCrit theory more generally. ProfessorHarris argues that LatCrit theory reveals ten- sions between scholars wishing to transcend the "black-white para- digm" and proponents of "black exceptionalism. " Professor Espinoza argues that the papers presented in this Symposium often reproduce in their critiques the very problems they have identified with race theory, illustrating the proposition that race in the United States is a "Tar- Baby." Professor Harris argues that LatCrit theory's value lies in its insistence that questions of language, culture and nation are inextrica- bly intertwined with questions of race. Professor Espinoza, placing LatCrit theory in the broader context of critical theory, expresses hope that storytelling as a method of scholarship will allow us to "re-story" the past and "re-imagine" the future. Trickster Stories from the American West David Ostheimer Introduction “The West” - Ask a first grader what this means and he may mention the cardinal direction. Most likely he will look at you and shrug his shoulders. Ask about “The American West” and you will continue to get blank stares. Native Americans? If it is after Thanksgiving, first graders will eagerly say that they were the Pilgrims’ friends. Indians? The Indian students will proudly raise their hands. Cowboys? Everyone knows they wear those cowboy hats and boots. The Spanish and Mexicans? What do they have to do with The American West? When I was a child we played “Cowboys and Indians”. We knew who John Wayne was; he was a cowboy. We saw him in movies on Saturday afternoon television. He wore a ten-gallon hat, carried six-shooters and rode a horse. Indians wore buckskin pants, war paint on their faces and feathers in their headdresses. They also had war cries and scalped people. At Halloween, you would see both cowboys and Indians. Today, country music (not country and western) stars wear cowboy hats and American Indians are pretty much absent from popular culture. Our students have no cultural references from which to draw background knowledge. Our Delaware Social Studies curriculum does not explicitly mention Native Americans until fourth grade.i Depending on their teacher, students may get some information on Native Americans as part of Columbus Day or Thanksgiving activities but explicit, targeted instruction is not prioritized. The American West and/or the pioneer experience may be explored as part of a unit on comparing communities, past and present, but again this instruction, if given, takes place in later grades.

    ORAL NARRATIVES, CUSTOMARY LAWS AND INDIGENOUS WATER RIGHTS IN CANADA by Marlowe Gregory Sam M.A., The University of British Columbia, 2008 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Interdisciplinary Studies) (Indigenous Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Okanagan) September 2013 © Marlowe Gregory Sam, 2013 Abstract Prior to the European discovery and colonization of North America the Indigenous peoples managed their natural environment through a management regime that was guided by traditional governance systems that were based within the oral tradition. Since the assertion of European authority the water rights of indigenous peoples were subsequently diminished and infringed upon by colonial policies that derived from the doctrine of discovery. In the contemporary era the Supreme Court of Canada has determined that the priority water rights of Canada’s aboriginal peoples must be proven under the premise of European concepts of land ownership and entitlement. It is my intent to use the oral narratives of the Syilx (Okanagan) to provide evidence of the ancient customary laws and practices that guided the management practices over this natural resource. To substantiate the existence of the customary laws of indigenous peoples I use primary research gathered from Syilx (Okanagan) and Secwepemc (Shuswap) informants. Previously published and unpublished oral narratives that were recorded and transcribed during the twenty-first century will also be used in this inquiry. Prior to the arrival of Europeans a phenomenon of globalization greatly influenced the development of colonial policies and laws that in turn impacted modern day Supreme Court decisions in both the United States and Canada.

I have used a Lucida Sans Unicode font throughout the work. The Lucida Sans Unicode font has been modified for the Okanagan Nsyilxcen alphabet. Nsyilxcen words, phrases and sentences are a necessary component of the work. The Lucida Sans Unicode font is modified to accommodate Nsyilxcen sounds on the English Standard keyboard. Some letters on the Okanagan Keyboard displaces some of the upper case font letters. As a result, for consistency Nsyilxcen is not capitalized as a standard. Except where ms word had the ability to autocorrect, Nsyilxcen words are in lower case. I have not adhered to the usual style of English grammar. Nsyilxcen is my primary language and English is a second language. Also important to me was the ability to maintain the structural qualities of the ―transition‖ English prevalent in Okanagan Syilx communities to allow greater accessibility to my community peers. Johnson (Sʔímlaʔxw) University of British Columbia-Okanagan way’, iskwíst, my name is, Sʔímlaʔxw, and I am from Penticton BC, Canada. kn sqilxw. I am a Syilx (Okanagan, Interior Salish) adult language learner. My cohort and I are midway in our language transformation to become proficient speakers. Our names are Prasát, Sʔímlaʔxw, C’ər̓tups, X̌wnámx̌wnam, Staʔqwálqs, and our Elder, Sʕamtíc’aʔ. We created an adult immersion house, deep in Syilx territory, and lived and studied together for five months. We combined intensive curricular study, cutting-edge second-language acquisition techniques, filmed assessments, and immersion with our Elder. We emerged transformed—we are n’łəqwcin, clear speakers, speaking at an intermediate level. There has been very little written about assessment of Indigenous language teaching methods or Indigenous language speaking ability, and much less written about filmed learning and assessment. Three films were created in our language, nqilxwcn, and placed on YouTube. The films give primacy to our personal narratives, document and share our transformation, speaking abilities, grassroots language activism and learning methods. According to Syilx ways, personal introductions come before any other words. I am Syilx, and related to the Simlas and Richters from Vernon and Ashnola BC. I am an N’syilxcn (n’qilxwcn, Okanagan-Colville, Interior Salish) language learner and teacher. I live in Penticton BC, Canada. Five years ago I arrived in Syilx community to find a critically endangered language and accepted a personal role and responsibility to learn N’syilxcn and teach it to others, as my PhD research. I found allies in w w w beginner intensives: our names are Prasát, C’"r!tups, #! námx" nam and Sta!q álqs. We committed as a cohort to live in an immersion house in Chopaka BC for five months. We were supported by our Elder, S"amtíc’a! (Sarah Peterson), and a language activist from Paul Creek Language Association, Chris Parkin. During one long winter, in 420 intensive hours of study, we transformed from k’lp’xwína! (beginning to hear, approximately beginner) to n’!"qwcin (clear voiced, approximately low-intermediate). I created three films in N’syilxcn, and placed them on YouTube to give primacy to our personal narratives, document our transformation, assess our learning and methods, and share our experience and motivation with language learners.
