Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of Karnataka

Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) is an autonomous organization under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka, which was established under the Founder Chairmanship of distinguished Space Scientist Padma Vibhushan Late Prof. U. R. Rao, Former Chairman, ISRO/Secretary, DOS, GOI. Presently, Dr. S. K. Shivakumar, Former Director, ISAC/ISTRAC, ISRO, GOI is the Chairman of KSTA. Details of major programs successfully organized by KSTA across the State during 2017 –‘18 are as follows:

1. Publication of Bimonthly Magazine – Vijnana Loka

A bimonthly science magazine titled ‘Vijnana Loka’ is being regularly published in Kannada by KSTA since 2007. During 2017-‘18, 6 issues of the bimonthly magazines were published in the months of May, July, September & November of the year 2017 and January & March of 2018. About 2000 copies of each issue of the magazine were printed and distributed free of cost to pre- university and science degree colleges, science centres, libraries and other organizations across the state.

2. Science Fair for Degree Students (in every district)

This program is being organized in every districts of the State in association with science degree/engineering colleges. The two day program consists of various competitions for students viz., exhibitions, quiz, drawing, etc., along with two lectures on the subject related to science and technology. During 2017-18, this program has been successfully organised in association of the following institutions:

The program was implemented in 27 district in the State and a total of 5200 students benefited from this program.

3. KSTA Fellowships for Science Degree Students

To encourage meritorious science degree students to continue studies in basic science, fellowship of Rs. 10,000/- per year (Rs. 1,000/- for 10 months) was given to 136 final year students studying in the various Universities across the State.

4. KSTA PG Science Fellowships

To encourage meritorious students to pursue higher education in basic science after completion of their degree, 24 final year PG students from different universities were provided with a fellowship of Rs. 15,000/- per year (Rs. 1,500/- for 10 months).

5. Science and Technology Conference in Kannada

KSTA, for the first time, organised Science and Technology Conference in Kannada in Mysore on the focal theme titled “Science, Technology and Society” on November 24 & 25, 2018 in association with JSS Arts, Science & Commerce College, Mysore.

This state level conference was inaugurated on November 24, 2018 by Hon’ble for Public Works and in-charge Minister Dr. H. C. Mahadevappa. His Holyness Shree Shree Shree Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamy of Suttur Math blessed the gathering. The Executive Secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeeta, Mysore, Dr. C. G. Betasuramath graced the occasion. Dr. H Honne Gowda, Special Director (Technical), DST/CEO & Member Secretary, KSTA welcomed the guests and gave an overview of the program, while the Principal of the College, Prof. M. Mahadevappa proposed the vote of thanks.

About 610 delegates from different parts of the State are benefited from this program.

6. Karnataka Science and Technology Academy Annual Conference

Tenth Annual Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) Conference was successfully organized during 18 - 19 January, 2018 on the focal theme titiled "Science and Technology for Future of Humanity" in association with Reva University, Bengaluru. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Anurag Kumar, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru on 18th January 2018. Dr. P. Shyamaraju, Chancellor, Reva University, Bengaluru presided over the function. Prof. K.M. Kaveriyappa, former VC, Mangalore Univerity &

Member, KSTA graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Dr. H Honne Gowda, Special Director (Technical), DST/CEO & Member Secretary and Dr. S. Y. Kulkarni, Vice Chancellor, REVA University graced the occasion as Guests of Honor.

Eight special lectures were delivered by distinguished scientists, eminent technocrats and renowned educationists on topic related to theme of the conference. 1050 delegates including teaching faculty of universities and colleges, degree and PG science students, science writers, officers of line departments and representatives of government autonomous organizations participated in the conference.

More than 200 research posters in Physical and Mathematical Sciences; Chemical & Life Sciences; Interdisciplinary Sciences and Engineering Science disciplines were presented in the Conference. A panel of experts evaluated and selected 4 best posters in each discipline for cash prizes (I Prize – Rs. 10,000/- and II Prize – Rs. 7,500/- and two consolation prizes of Rs. 5,000/-).

6.1 KSTA Lifetime Achievement Award

A senior scientist of the State who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology as well as development in the Country, is being bestowed with KSTA Life Time Achievement Award. Renowned space scientist Padma Shri Dr. S. K. Shivakumar, Former Director, ISAC, Bengaluru was conferred “KSTA Life Time Achievement Award” in the inaugural function

7 of the 10th KSTA Annual Conference. The award included a cash of Rs. 1.00 lakh, a gold medal and a citation.

7. Celebration of National and International Days related to Science and Technology

In order to develop scientific temperament among students and to encourage them to develop scientific thinking and creativity as well as to understand the scientific developments and advancements, following national and international days were celebrated in association with the science degree/engineering colleges during 2017-18. In these programs, two lectures related to theme of the program and competitions for students such as essay writing (Kannada & English), model making, quiz, etc. were organised. The winners of the competitions were awarded cash prizes and certificates:

8. Special Lecture Series/Workshop for PG Students

In order to widen the horizon of understanding of PG students about advanced scientific research as well as to encourage them to pursue career in R&D, special lectures were successfully organized in association with the following Universities/institutions: Sl. Each PG Special Lecture Series was organised for 3 days, while special workshops for 2 days. A quiz consisting of 60 multiple choice questions based on the lectures delivered was conducted at the end of the programme. Based on marks obtained in the quiz, top 3 students were selected and awarded cash prizes of Rs. 10,000/-, Rs. 6000/- and Rs. 4000/-, respectively. In total, from 13 programs, about 2119 students are benefited from this program.

9. Certificate Courses in Science and Engineering

This program is being organised with the aim of providing an opportunity for Lecturers/research scholars to broaden their horizon of knowledge in cutting edge technologies and frontier science. During 2017-18, 555 participants are benefited from the following six programs: 10

10. Illustrative Science Book for High School Students

In order to create an interest in science and mathematics among high school students and to provide additional information on various topics as per the syllabus of high school, KSTA brought out 4 books in Kannada viz., ‘Climate

Change’ (Author: Mrs. Sumangala Mammigatti), Hormones (Author: Dr. Vasundara Bhupati), Infectious Diseases (Author: Dr. Prakash C Rao) and Light (Mr. S. Manjunath) and sent to selected 1950 high schools in the State.

11. Programs under Special Development Plan (SDP)

In order to promote basic science education and to propagate science and technology in 114 taluks of the State identified as backward taluks by Dr. D. M. Nanjundappa committee Government is providing funds under special development plan to KSTA since 2013-14. Following programs have been undertaken during 2017-18:

11.1 KSTA – SDP Fellowships

In order to encourage meritorious science degree students in backward taluks of the state as identified by Dr. D. M. Nanjundappa Committee, KSTA-SDP fellowships of Rs.10,000/- per year (Rs. 1,000/- per month for 10 months) was provided to 1071 students from Kalaburagi (262 fellowships), Belgaum (223 fellowships), Bengaluru (324 fellowships) and Mysuru (262 fellowships).

11.2 National Conference on Science, Technology and Education

National Conference on the focal theme titled "Science, Technology and Education" was successfully organized during 21 - 22 July, 2017 in association with University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur with the funding support under Special Development Plan (SDP).

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. S. Ayappan, Former Director General, Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). Dr. P. M. Salimath, Vice Chancellor, Agricultural University, presided over the function. Dr. M. B. Chetty, Additional Director General (HRD), Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Dr. A. M. Ramesh, Senior Scientific Officer, KSTA was Guest of Honor. Dr. A. G. Srinivas, Professor of Agricultural Entomology welcomed the guests, while Dr. Anand R, Senior Scientific Officer, KSTA proposed vote of thanks. About 650 delegates participated in the conference and 8 invited lectures were delivered by eminent scientists/technocrats.

An opportunity was provided to present research posters in basic and applied sciences as well as engineering discipline. About 268 research posters in Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Chemical & Life Sciences, Interdisciplinary Sciences and Engineering disciplines were presented in the Conference. Best posters were selected through a panel of experts and 8 prizes were given away.

11.3 National Conference on Role of Science and Technology in Rural Development

National Conference on the theme “Role of Science and Technology in Rural Development" was successfully organized during 23 - 24 February 2018 in association with Shri Gavi Siddeshwara Arts, Science and Commerce and Postgraduate Center, Koppal with the funding support under Special Development Plan (SDP).

The conference was inaugurated by Hon’ble MP of Koppal District Shri Sanganna Karadi on 23rd February, 2018. Dr. S. K. Shivakumar, Former Director, ISRO Satellite Centre and Chairman, KSTA presided over the function. Prof. B. Themmegowda, Vice Chancellor, Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University and Prof. M. S. Shubas, Vice Chancellor, Shri Krishnadevaraya University graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Prof. S. A. Patil, Registrar, VSK University and Prof. S. Mallikarjuna, Secretary, Shri Gavi Siddeswara Trust graced the occasion as Guests of Honor.

11.4 National Conference on Science and Technology for Inclusive Development

National Conference on the focal theme titled "Science and Technology for Inclusive Development" was successfully organized during 6 - 7 1 March, 2018 in association with Gulbarga University, Kalaburgi under Special Development Plan (SDP).

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. S. K. Shivakumar, Former Director, ISRO Satellite Centre and Chairman, KSTA on 6th March, 2018 at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Bhavan. Prof. S. R. Niranjana, Vice Chancellor, Gulbarga University presided over the function. Prof. H. A. Jayaraman, Former Director, National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Dr. P. S. Shankar, Emeritus Professor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.

Dr. A. M. Ramesh, Senior Scientific Officer, KSTA gave an overview of the program. Prof. Agasar Dayanand, Registrar, Gulbarga University welcomed the guests, while Prof. N. B. Nadumani proposed vote of thanks. Prof. Geetha Bali, Former Vice Chancellor, Akkamahadevi Womens University, Vijayapura and Prof. Chandrakanth Kelamani, Conference Co-ordinator graced the occasion.

About 800 delegates including teaching faculty of universities and colleges, degree and PG science students, officers of line departments and representatives of government autonomous organizations participated in the conference.

12. Other Programs

12.1 Workshop on Biotechnology

One week workshop was organised for students of biotechnology in association with the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Davanagere from January 15 to 21, 2018. This program was successful in providing a platform form for students and industrialist to interact. About 210 students benefited.

12.2 Science Exhibition

KSTA in association with Government First Grade College, Holenarasipura, organised state level science exhibition for degree students and divisional level science exhibition for Pre University students. Students from different districts of the State participated in the event. About 150 students benefited.

12.3 Science and Art

KSTA, in association with the Kala Suruchi, Mysore, successfully organised science plays on science and art during 8 to 11 March, 2018. Eminent scientists, cultural intellectuals and experts from theatre field participated in the program. About 400 students benefited.

12.4 Special Program on Har Gobind Khorana

To commemorate 50th Anniversary of bestowing of the Nobel Prize in the field of medicine to Dr. Har Gobind Khorana, KSTA in association with Surana College, Bengaluru, organised one day special program on 21st March 2018. About 260 students benefited.
